Paint your D - NOT permanently

I was just browsing the Lotus site and found a guy who painted his entire car with Plasti-dip spray cans. Beauty is that Plasti-dip paint is not permanent. You can just pill it off if you don't like it. For us, you can paint D with whatever the color you want and just pill it off to SS at anytime. According to the website, it's pretty durable and will last a couple of years. Not that I am going to do this but find it very interesting.

great idea!!!
not sure it would peel of that easily from a surface with a grain on it.
I think I'll keep mine stainless :approve:

I think I saw a thread here one time where someone put some plasti-dip numbers on the rear quarter. If I recall correctly it pealed off fine and took a just a little scrub to get the paint out of the grain.

The PO of 1776 did this to the wheels on his Miata and they look GREAT. I wonder if they make a dark grey that's reasonably close to the early D wheel color.

How much control do you have over the surface finish? I've been toying with the idea of a vinyl wrap for a few year. Just something temporary to try for a couple months/years depending on how much I like it.

I'd still be scared about getting this stuff down into the crevices and cracks, never to be removed again. I'd only trust it if the panels were painted off the car.

From my small experimentations, it is more of a matt finish rather than glossy. Perhaps more coats would result in a smoother finish.

I would wonder about the white Lotus above being able to stay clean, though it is certainly washable probably even through a car wash.

You have to pick at it a little to get something to grab, but after that it just peels right off.

I wonder if it bonds better to the stainless than a painted car? Probably so, because of the grain.

What happens when little street debris hits this coat? Will it start peeling?

I would rather go with an adhesive vinyl printout. Lasts longer and cleans of easily with a hot gun. Cool thing is you can print on it anything and become artistic.

I think a Carbon Fiber wrap would look nice.

I saw a Carrera at a local car show done well and it looked great.

Agree, very good looking.
If I had to paint mine, That would be the way to do it.

But sorry to dissapoint you... it is photoshopped. The only D close in apprearance in matte has gotten a foil coverage.

I painted my Civic rims with black PlastiDip. It has a nice subtle texture and has lasted thru 2 Ohio salt laded winters and a bunch of high pressure you-hose-it car washes. Very durable. It does come off easy, but you have to pick at it to get a good pulling point before it comes off. Normal driving, hi pressure washing and scrubbing while cleaning - it stays on. No worries. I like it.

I didn't think about using this to paint facias but this could work. Gun metal with silver metallic might match. Plus, it would be much easier then using 3M wraps. I have used 3M wraps for my other car but takes ton of time and curves and round corners are PIA.

Also, I can spray paint side mirrors and louvre with this stuff. Might protect from UV and prolong the life.

I was actually wondering the same thing.

I was also thinking about suspension parts like sway bars, as an alternative to powder coating. With it being rubberized it should protect it quite well. I recall seeing a car last year with a fully sprayed frame. It was freshly done and at the time I thought it was a spray on truck liner but now I wonder if it was plasti-dip. Must admit, it made me a little nervous with all the problems epoxy had with retaining water and presuming this stuff would do the same
