View Full Version : Transmission 5-Speed Lip seal housing pitted...

I have a leaking transmission.
I'be had the lip seal replaced 3 times. Upon further inspection the housing that the lip seal sits on
(Driver side axel) is leaking and is pitted. Has anyone experienced this before? Or have any ideas on how to fix this?
I usually only leak after driving. I get maybe a puddle the size of my hand over a period of two days.
But I don't want to damage the trans at all.

If I am undestanding you correctly, replace this part. (And the o-ring that seals it to the case).

Yep, that is the part I was referring too.
Crap, hoping it was salvageable. I'll have to put an order in for one than.

You may be able to salvage it, try cleaning up the pitting. Although since you have tried several times I'll guess it was damaged with a seal puller.

Be sure you know what you are doing when you remove this part from the trans - it sets the backlash on the differential and must be put back in the same setting/depth or you'll see some other (read: expensive) problems.

I don't think they tried to clean it up just yet. We have a transmission specialist who is familer with the UN-1 and has rebuilt them before. He works at another one of our shops so to be safe if we have to pull the part and or replace it I'll have him do it.
I don't like transmissions myself so I won't be doing the work.

I have a list of items that the car needs. Seems like for every 1 item taken care of 5 more take its place lol.
I've had the car now 12 years and it never ceases to surprise me.
