View Full Version : General Increasing DeLorean values...

I have an idea that will help increase the values of all DeLoreans.
We should all pledge not to sell our DeLorean for less than $25,000. This will instantly increase the value if we can get 70% of the owners on board with this idea.
The only cars that should sell for less are ones that are wrecked or are in non-running/horrible condition.

Cartels almost always don't work in these types of goods. One reason is that Deloreans are not homogenous: they are in good condition or excellent condition or poor condition. Additionally, "cheaters" (say, someone induced to sell the car for a bit less, or a lot less) put an end to the scheme.

I'm not worried about that, we are not price fixing and we are not a corporation. Don't worry so much about the rules. Remember, sometimes if you don't break the rule the rule may break you.

My D is worth about $30k right now simply because I would not sell it for any less. I agree, it will never work for cars like this were 6k still exist, too many people and units.

But you just denied breaking any rules. So your rhetorical statement does not apply, correct?
Besides, why are you so concerned with it. DeLorean enthuasits, generally, are more emotionally invested in the car. They don't get into this car to make money. They're not a sound financial investment.

Your D is worth what you can get for it/what somebody is willing to pay. Based on the availability of this car, and what they appear to be selling for, it's a buyers market right now. So you need to qualify your statement. Your D is worth 30k to you because you wouldn't take anything less for it.

^^ This.
Also, fixing the price does not change the value of the vehicle. If the person planning on buying one does not see the condition to fit the price, the buyer will not buy. The value does not increase due to this. This plan sounds pretty similar to DeLorean One.
How will this benefit anyone? It will eventually hurt the owner in the long run for insurance. I doubt that even Insurance companies will agree with this fixed pricing scheme.

There is another flaw in the OP plan. He is only considering this forum, which is a very small segment of all DeLoreans out there. Even if we did all agree to sell for no less than $25K, our numbers are insignificant in the grand scheme of things. I don't care about the value, in fact I prefer the price to stay low so I can buy more of them, more parts, etc. I actually think asking prices are higher on average than the condition of the car reflects in the current market.

Umm... ok. Is this kind of like how so many things we see in the world today have definitely benefited from people, groups, organizations or countries doing their own deciding on what rules they should follow and which ones they shouldn't?
I generally try to stick to doing what I know is the right thing, and it rarely has anything to do with whether someone is watching or whether I might get caught. There are no doubt plenty of ways to manipulate or get around the various rules in life, but I sleep better at night from choosing not to roll that way. Karma, golden rule, honesty, common sense... call it whatever you want. We all get the opportunity to decide how to do things for ourselves, which is good and bad depending on the perspective.
The irony is killing me!

The wisest thing to is sell over in Europe. ;)
In the UK alone, project D's are no less than 12k to 16K GBP (20.000USD)
Shipping costs about 1.5K to 2K USD and the we have the European VAT depending on country. 9 to 15% on invoice value.

The car is a passion of mine and I have no plans to sell it. If I am forced to sell it for whatever reason, I would sell it to a DeLorean enthusiast who shares the passion and would enjoy it to the full. I would price the car reasonably in regards to its condition and my circumstances. I would never sell it to a dealer or trade it in. My car is not and never will be an investment. May the DMC-12 forever grace the roads of the world... My two cents worth

Yes that is a very romantic thought and believe me, everybody likes to know his car went to somebody who loves it.
The price paid or sold however does not diminish the enthusiasm.
Yet larger prices distinct an individual who is on the well off side financially.
Yes those people rarely have the same passion for it as they may have another 50 classics in their garage.
So It is all a matter of luck, and hopefully you don't have to sell it some day.

You want to make the value of your Delorean high? Keep it as stock as you can and as nice as you can. Make everything work in it and take good care of it. The POS that another owner wants to sell will never get much because at this point it is all about condition. The better cars will always be worth more. Ed Bernstein tried this strategy of "price fixing" and it didn't work for him either. As the price of parts goes up so will the value of the good cars. Follow the prices of the #1 cars at auctions and that will give you a good indication of where the values are. Besides, most of us are in it for the long haul and do not plan to sell anytime soon. The ones that want the car to be high in value are the ones who want to "steal" a "fixer-upper" so they can make some money!

If you want an investment, buy a diversified mutual fund. If you want to have fun working on and driving a unique car, own a DeLorean. If you want to convince your significant other that your DeLorean is an investment, we're right behind you. :grouphugg:
Frankly I'd prefer prices to be lower. It provides a dual benefit: more enthusiasts who are struggling to save enough to buy one will be able to do so, and it also has the side benefit that you won't see nearly as many "flippers" buying low and selling high since it wouldn't be worth it financially to them.
Insurance on your own cars though, well, that's a different story :)

Ahh - but there is a way. A small percentage of owners with no current plans to sell cannot drive up costs - but a coordinated group of buyers could in short order. What we need to do is, as a community, post on this forum about every available Delorean we can find, worldwide, and then start bidding wars for each one. If we agree that we will collectively bid up every car, and then buy it, we can control the market.
There are perhaps a thousand members here - if everyone buys one car for $40k more than it is currently worth, the prices will go through the roof. Just remember, once you buy one, you cannot sell for at least another 20 years, or until the market inertia has at least doubled the price again.
So, who's on board?

From what I've seen a properly installed Island or BAE turbo kit increases the value of the car. Those are part of the history of the marque, address the engine power issue and are relatively easy to reverse. Also in the UK at least the Stage 1 & 2 Houston mods seem to increase the value a bit, although nearly as much as they cost.
Jonathan
04-13-2013, 08:52 AM
The way I interpret David's suggestion about keeping it as stock as you can to increase the value, has more to do with keeping all areas on the car functional, lights all working, switches and motors all working, items on the car as part of the original design intent replaced if broken with either original parts or ones that are new and improved (head light switch).
The cars you see with calculators in the steering wheel, bitchin' stereo mods, low profile rims/rubber, whale tails, or mods that are obviously not part of the 1981 design, I think are not going to be as attractive to future classic car collectors. We are not driving 69 Camaros with matching numbers, but this same sort of "is it original?" mindset that MOST classic car guys use to look for a car and assess it's value, will also apply to our Ds.
Turbo kits are definitely something in the chronology of the cars and company and could very well be seen as a valuable asset. Swapping the motor out with something else entirely, may give you some sales appeal for the guy looking for a high horsepower version of the DeLorean, but in the long run, I feel the original cars from the factory hold up better. And if something was rare from the factory, even better. Flapped hoods perhaps? We have all heard of the muscle car era stories where the big engine option for an extra $4k on a car only retailing for $8k at the time, was not only way too expensive for most, they also only produced a handful of them. Those kinds of cars are worth considerably more now than a regular option car, and way more than one where the DIY guy put something else in it all together.
David T
04-13-2013, 10:23 AM
In the larger world of collector cars (not just Deloreans) staying stock makes the car more collectable therefore more valuable. In fact, an unrestored, well taken care of car can be worth more than an overrestored car. Of course everyone has there own opinion and you can do what you want with your individual car. Adding a turbo (either the Island or BAE setup) will make the car worth more, just not more than it will cost to do it! In fact, it will probably cost you more to add a turbo then you will get for it. As for changes, if they are reversible they usually don't affect the value much.

I'm definitely pro-increase on the DeLorean market value. But, I think it's just something that will have to come naturally. It's fun to think of 'schemes' to quickly and directly raise the average value and I'd love to be driving around in vintage semi-exotic car worth twice what I paid for it, but I think it's just going to take some more time (quite a lot more time :)).

This has Actually worked in the past.. in the mid 1990s a group of Shelby Cobra owners felt their cars should be worth more, so many [100+] owners posted their cars up for sale for exaggerated prices.. some even a $1,000,000. Funny thing Happened. within weeks Cobra sold at Barret Jackson for those prices and more. Cars were suddenly in Demand. Even 'Ol Carrol himself built more to sell .... Yea it was a conspiracy, but it worked!

The "Free Market" is not perfect. A while back an Amphicar sold at auction for around $100,000 when before that a NICE one would go for *maybe" $20K TOPS! It was an anomaly but all of a sudden everyone with an Amphicar thought they had struck GOLD! The market quickly corrected itself but, yes, strange things can occur. You would think a car that was a centerpiece for 3 blockbuster movies would be worth more than it is. It is an Icon of the '80's and was well featured on the History channel ('80's Tech). It helped demand but did little for the prices. IMHO one reason prices are low is that there are a LOT of Deloreans around in poor-to-bad shape selling at low prices because it will cost so much to make them as nice as an expensive one in good shape. Too many buyers figure they can save money by buying the POS and spending a little bit to make it nice. They can save a few bucks doing it themselves a little at a time. Some do and others get tired and run out of money before they can fix it up. Now they try to sell it again and are happy to get out what they put in it. We see them come and go on this and other forums.

You're right, the systems aren't perfect. Sure, price fixing is illegal, but you do see it happening. I guess if people/companies can get away with it, then why not?
You might be familiar with an example of it very close to you/me/all of us actually... it can often be seen happening on most streets and corners in the local neighborhood. They often sell their goods for something like $4.00 per gallon (or $1.29 per litre here in Canada)...

Too true...and somehow the price of gas changes here 3 times a day...and it is always higher when people are on their way to and from work...and cheaper at midnight for some reason. Guess that's how the oil companies make billions in profit!

Someday DeLoreans will be worth a lot of money. It wont be any time soon though. It typically takes 50 - 80 years for a cars value to really sky rocket. Right now, a lot of pre-war cars are (financially) maturing at a faster rate than a mutual fund of equal value, which is pretty cool.
Hemmings Sport and Exotic recently published a small column about deloreans starting to really sell for higher values and to paraphrase "earning the respect they deserve." They are doing quite well at auctions other than Barrett Jackson, too with average selling prices around $35,000 for nice examples.
They are still too new to expect exorbitant value from, but i honestly believe if you've got one now it will be worth holding on to and enjoying. As numbers dwindle and the years roll on... perhaps when your knees give out and you pass it over to your son or daughter, it will at some point be a rare, highly valued and sought after collectors vehicle.
Just my $0.02.

just to steer this thread to a somewhat positive direction. I noticed on a recent ebay search (I check every so often), that there are a suprisingly high number of sold DeLoreans on ebay completed auctions...and they are selling for decent numbers as far as ebay goes.
