I see it's only got one status update right around DCS 2010. I also recall that at that DCS someone had sprinkled around the headshot cutouts as "masks" for people.

Wonder what that was all about ....

I heard the fuel accumulator for the gold DeLoreans is sold at DeLorean One. It's also gold-plated and comes with gold hoses.

Basically...Ed is very old school. Ed dominated the DeLorean Parts industry in the late 80s and early-mid nineties. This really got to his head, and made him cocky. This really reflected in the way he handled his business.

Lets say for example, I have car VIN#3997, and Ed decided not to sell to me for whatever reason, whether he didn't like me or due to another matter. Lets say later on down the road I end up selling my car and you were to buy it. If you were to call Ed for parts he would ask for your VIN#. He would put your call on hold and scroll through a list of VIN#'s he has on hand. He would see that that car used to belong to me, and he would not sell you parts because I used to own that car. Great business, right?

I've also heard horror stories from people who used to do business with him that he would throw tools at both his shop workers and his wife Millie. He was known for his touchy attitude and anger fits.

His prices are marked WAYY over what they should be (200 for a fuel sender)

Another story I heard from Danny Botkin was he lent Ed some Crate Engines on consignment. Ed sold them and never gave Danny the money that was owed.

Ed's philosophy on DeLoreans is unless you are wealthy and old, you don't deserve to own a DeLorean. Case & Point.

I am sure the list goes on......

You aren't allowed to do business with him period. It is because you are part of this forum and because you use "outside vendors". He doesn't want to support cars that use products that are inferior to his.

hm, sounds like poor business practices for sure.

the general vibe i got from reading comments was that it seems like an 'elitist' repair shop that doesnt want to bother to help the 'little guy' doing his own resto.

in contrast, the other vendors (DMC branches, DPI, SpecialTAuto, etc.) sound like they really go out of their way to help their customers with what they need/dont need.

Completely new to D ownership and needing a few parts, I innocently placed an order using Delorean One's online purchase page. The parts showed as available and I checked out and paid by credit card and received an email receipt. Seems simple enough, right?

One would think so. I received a call later that day from Ed who after running through his impressive Delorean resume told me that my car didn't need these parts and if I didn't have it looked at by him that it would fall apart and every system would eventually fail and that I had no idea what I was doing. Didn't matter that I had an accomplished, internationally celebrated and award-winning local mechanic who I was working with. Ed told me that he was indefinitely suspending my order until I knew what I was doing. I went elsewhere and easily got the parts I needed the next day. The car certainly 'did' need those parts as well as many more which were likewise acquired elsewhere.

A business owner is certainly entitled to run his operation as he sees fit. I'll say one thing though, in this era of easy information access and widespread communication where a simple Google search of the business name will likely bring up this thread on this site, D1 isn't going to win many new customers. Then again, it was quite apparent to me that Ed isn't interested in gaining customers. It's just a shame that based on my reading of similar experiences, Ed apparently chooses to use his considerable expertise to stifle rather than support the community. I personally don't get it but I wish him happiness.

Seriously. We need to somehow figure out some "good" vin numbers that he will accept and each person call with a different vin number asking legitimate questions about legitimate parts. He would go nuts if this happened all day.

I think he's finally out of business now anyway. I'm not sure why he still has is website up. The last time I poked around his site, all the parts had astronomical prices (like a million dollars for a gasket or some such thing). There is no way he can even compete in today's DeLorean World.

I'm repeating something I posted in 2001. I think it has relevance here.
Dear Group,
I have withheld this story long enough but I feel it must be told.
I first met Ed & Millie Bernstein in January of 1983 to talk about forming a DeLorean club or clubs. I was instrumental in forming the Pacific Northwest DeLorean Club (PNDC) which started on February 26, 1983. Ed and company formed the DOA soon after. I met again, later, with Ed and he wanted the PNDC to become a chapter of DOA. Our membership voted this down and chose to remain independent. I have been to Ed's shops, old & new, with my wife & my DeLorean. We purchased some items while there. I always considered Ed and Millie as "friends" and until now was member #797 of DOA having joined (I think) in later 1983. I know the Truscotts and other past DOA officers. The above serves only to establish my connection with the Bernstein's/DeLorean One/DOA.
Fast forward to April, 2000. I need to have a brake master cylinder overhauled. I take my old cylinder plus a rebuild kit from my parts inventory to a machine shop recommended to me, Seattle Brake and Clutch. Doug, manager, tells me that they can rebuild any cylinder so a few days later I took to them an old and leaking clutch master and slave, with instructions to "fix these". Seattle Brake & Clutch had problems finding the proper parts for these cylinders and ON THEIR VERY OWN cruised the WEB and all by themselves found DeLorean One. Again, on their own with no information from me, Doug calls DeLorean One and is told "yes we have the repair kits but we need a VIN number to be certain" Doug then called me to obtain said number. I didn't say a word but suspected what was happening. I gave Doug my VIN #6292. He again called Ed (by this time Doug knew he was talking to an Ed) and tried to order needed parts. Upon giving Ed my Vin number and waiting for quite a few seconds, Ed came back and told Doug "sorry, we have no parts for that car" AND HUNG UP THE PHONE!!! Does this mean that if I ever sell my car that the new owner can never purchase parts from DeLorean One? Because I have purchased most of my needed parts from Specialty Automotive in Olympia, WA., does this mean that even given the fact that I know Ed & Millie that I can never purchase parts from them?
While I have been a member of this list and the DeLorean community for many years, I have read many accounts with regard to Ole Ed. I never partook in Ed bashing, remember, I considered them friends and thought that the DeLorean community needed DeLorean One and any and all shops and/or suppliers. I have now dropped my membership from Ed's club and as many other people do, consider Ed to be a complete a--, who does not deserve to even use the name DeLorean connected with his endeavor. Count me now as a member of the Ed Bernstein bashing team. I will do all I can to steer people away from DeLorean One and his DOA, the same DOA that has never published a club treasury balance sheet. Do they too have something to hide?

My first run in with Ed goes back to the late 90's. A friend and I were in L.A. and wanted to go to D1 b/c they were the closest shop that I knew about. (My only D info at the time was Delorean world mags) So I go in and try to buy a sweater when he asks me what my vin was. I told him I don't own a D. He then goes on to tell me that the sweaters are for owners only and walks out. We thought he was messing with us until he never returned.

I work in customer service all week, you just don't do that to your customers (even if they are irritating and demanding, I still strive to show them common courtesy and help them within good reason.) You have to be a people person to be a good businessman.

Sweaters are only for owners, sheesh! That would be like saying "you can't wear your Mirajcap because you're not Michael J. Fox." lol craziness...

I'd like to know if I'm blacklisted.

Think I'll make an order that will just get rejected anyway.

If you've ever said anything about D1 or Ed himself on the DML or DMC Talk or any of the public message boards, you're guaranteed to be blacklisted. If you've taken your car to any other vendor besides D1, you're blacklisted. If you've publicly acknowledged buying parts from other vendors than D1 on any DeLorean forum, you're blacklisted. If your car had a previous owner Ed didn't like, you're blacklisted. The odds are stacked against your favor.

To the best of my understanding, D1 has already pretty much been phased out of existence anyway. I know he sold off much of his parts supply through ebay and such recently. Ed probably whittled down his customer base to the point where he couldn't keep himself financially viable anymore. The number of running DeLoreans is most certainly shrinking every year: cars are lost to wrecks, floods, fires, neglect, etc. And the number of original/long term owners is quickly dwindling too as they're an aging population. It's no surprise Ed would eventually run out of people who he was willing to do business with.

I've highlighted the word "running" in my quote of your post because I think you're wrong (in the nicest possible way!). A large proportion of existing DeLoreans have been laid up at some point and the boards are littered with examples being resurrected. The DeLorean has enjoyed a resurgence of interest with people like me who saw BTTF as a kid and I think the numbers of "donors" were dwindling, being snapped up by private owners in order to restore. I've personally done 5 and am in the middle of my 6th

You're absolutely right about cars being constantly pulled out of long term storage and being resurrected. But I've also noticed that some cars are going right back into hibernation too. The 3 DeLoreans in Houston right now are a prime example. They were kept running until 2003, but have since been neglected. Like I also said, several are lost every year to collisions, to nature events such as floods, fires, etc. All I was saying is that there's some sort of offset at work: yes, many cars are being restored; but many are losing their lives/get put back into storage too.

In Fresno at least, non running/crummy DeLoreans seems to be the rule. Ryan King and I have found quite a few cars in town that are all in a state on disrepair. I've think we've counted about 8-10 cars that don't run and are slowly rotting away. Ryan and I might be the only owners who drive our cars daily around here. We helped sell one of the Fresno cars to Mike Ward here on the forum, and that wasn't running until the owner had it fixed before shipping it to England. So from my experience, I've seen a lot more sad DeLoreans than nice ones.

DeLorean03

So from my experience, I've seen a lot more sad DeLoreans than nice ones.

While I see your point, think about statistics and "sample size." If you only look in your area, yes, you will definitely see nearly only rotting DeLoreans. If you look, say, across the country - all of a sudden - we see more "resurrections" occurring. We have 3205 being resurrected constantly, Morpheus restoring his recent purchase (2nd one too if you count the first one he owned), and Mike is bringing his car up to snuff more and more (and if I remember correctly, he chose a restoration project just as Morpheus did) - and these resurrections are nearly "country distance" apart.

Heck, I know of 5 DeLoreans - other than my own - just here in the Pensacola area. All 5 = dead or gone by now. My "sample size" is small; therefore, it looks as though all the DeLoreans are dying. Yet, the "red DeLorean" that was bought a couple weeks ago is undergoing restoration - that I know for sure. Another one of the 4 remaining cars I know has been "shop serviced" by a "collector/antique/exotic" shop here that exclusively works on those kinds of cars. So 40% of those cars I know of in my area have been saved. Oh, and I did a minor restoration back in 2003-2004, so I guess technically I could say I "brought one back" too (:....

While I definitely agree with Louie's original statement, I do believe we have people who bring some of them back. Some of us just adore these lil' cars, and as long as that frame is fixable or all those body panels are solid = it can be fixed. ProtoDeLorean and ProjectVixen are two EXCELLENT examples that "it can be done, no matter how far it's gone"

It's like Doc Brown said........ (: ....

dhaney

I've seen a lot more sad DeLoreans than nice ones.

Yet here in Colorado until recently we had only 1 non-running Delorean. Thanks to the hard work of the owner, we now have none! The owner just last week made his first venture with his car to a tech session!

Our population is small in that we only have 14 cars in the club all of them are in good working order and most all of them are better than average in appearance as well.

Back on topic:

I have had dealings with D1 in the past, in fact I was able to get a parts order from them once.... it was way back when Steven Wynn was still working with Ed and he answered the phone! Steven's accent was much more accute in those days that is why that one particular order is so memorable.

I suppose I'd counter with "well, they're not actually being destroyed", but that wasn't my point in the first place

DeLoreans are absolutely destroyed here in the US every year. Some are lost to hurricanes (floods) like Katrina, some DeLoreans burn to the ground because of electrical/fuel fires, some are deemed total losses from collisions, etc. Yes, the ones that are neglected to death are still able to get back on the road again at some point. It just seems this past decade that I've seen many cars going back into neglect after being pulled out of long term storage. I guess their owners get frustrated with them and give up, knowing they can't sell the things for anywhere near what they have in them. What I was mainly commenting on is it seems the number of DeLoreans being re-mothballed this past decade almost seems to almost offset the ones which ARE pulled out of storage. This is all purely subjective stuff though, of course. :)

I guess my point is this: there really aren't that many currently licensed & registered DeLoreans on the road. There are undoubtedly more that run than are licensed and registered. But the 3,000 number being thrown around of licensed & registered DeLoreans really wouldn't surprise me. There are many more DeLoreans than that still left. My guess would be in the 7,000 range. But most of those cars are going to be in poor condition or long term storage.

Ed officially" retired " from the Delorean business Dec 31 2010.

After suffering through Transformers with the kids I decide to do a drive by of BOTH locations...

The shop we all knew and loved is still there with a sign, but there is nothing but Mercedes in the parking lot - clearly a new mechanic has moved in who has had not interest in taking down the sign...

2670

But - the GPS (Google maps) also said there was a Delorean One location about half a mile away. A sad looking little unit in a partially deserted industrial park. No cars there and no sign of life at 8pm...

2669

First - I think its interesting that Ed didn't have anyone to sell/pass the business on to. WTF? Had he run it so far into the ground that it was actually worthless? More likely I'd think he decided no one was worthy of his legacy. (Hosni Mubarak still had a job at the time).

I just hope that his techs found other jobs somewhere - imagine how abused they must have been putting up with that guy just so they could try to put food on the table...

Anyone want to ring the phone and see if he's still answering?

Somebody needs to go by with a few hundred dollars and offer to buy the sign, what could be done with it that is properly fitting?

Despite Ed's lack of business sense and customer relations skills, D1 is partly the reason many cars are still around. Don't get me wrong, my two phone calls with him back in '97 when I needed an new GC for my auto left me pretty much confused and seriously disliking the dude but D1 is part of the history and I wouldn't mind having the sign, pretty cool piece if you ask me even if Ed was associated with it. Heck I'd just tell people this is where Stephen Wynne was before he started DMCH.

It should be donated to the DeLorean Museum.

As Sean says, Ed and his various business enterprises was, as far as I can tell, partially instrumental in keeping the "Dream Alive" in the '80s.

Dare I say it, but he may be as an important part of the DeLorean history as BTTF

When, and why, his unique customer service style appeared I cannot say, but some point to the dml and that pesky internet.

Having said that, for a certain customer base, he has maintained a number of cars in near-concours condition (at huge cost I'm sure).

The ends here do not justify the means. I could argue that D1 is the reason so many cars were left to rot. That sign(along with all things D1) should be treated like the "Enron" sign, thrown away and forgotten. Sure it's historic, but would anyone want to remember?

I started going through the website looking at availability and prices. My jaw dropped. I started doubting if I could keep the car even if I found one. Learnt something new today reading all this, never knew D owners were dealing with a Repairer/Supplier with such hatred with the outside world.

From what i read, seems like Ed wants to be exclusive and the main person to deal with concerning Deloreans in all aspects. Hence the clothing, only for owners or if someone else touches yr Delorean, you have gone to the dark side. He probably wanted to keep the Delorean community in control through his Business. High prices are to reflect how serious you are about Deloreans and iron out potential owners who cannot upkeep a D.

His actions may seem abnormal at first, but he does have an underlining love for Ds, thats why he was in the business. Money was not a concern for him, it was the fact that the "family" strayed and felt betrayed.

He should get some counselling to iron through these personal issues and barriers. If you were loyal (like Arnie use to be with him), he would probably take the shirt off his back if needed.

Real shame, he could had been helped earlier in the years and turned things around. He did more damage than good by his actions and probably did not realise this till the end came to fruitration.

And maybe he contributed to Deloreans dying around us as previous owners realised that they cannot upkeep the D with crazy part prices. We can thank the WWW to make things easier to source help and parts and the growing support network which was not around 10 years ago. I personally believe the number of Ds will grow in due course. :)

Anyway, my 2cents from reading all this.

Ed was one of the major contributors to the magazines. The tech articles and the owner stories are good reading for a Delorean fan!

Well when the Internet and folks like DMCH James started spreading information, Eds stronghold started to crumble, then he just went nuts rather than thrive like his partner Steve did.

it was way back when Steven Wynn was still working with Ed

I am glad someone else remembers this..

Way back Ed B single-handedly kept the Delorean Marque alive. With his magazine and DOA (which he ran as a publicity organ for D1) he kept interest alive and supplied parts when there was no one else. He, P J Grady and DMCCA was all there was. The Delorean community owes a debt of gratitude to him in spite of all of the bad press he was able to create about his eccentric business practices. I am no fan of D1 but he was all there was "back in the day". Once competition began and the Internet became popular he was not able to compete and became less relevant to the larger Delorean community. For that we have Steve Wynn, James Espey and John Harvey mostly to thank. There is a whole lot more to this history if you are interested but no one can dismiss the impact on the Delorean's history Ed B had. If you were new to the Delorean community one of the first things you did was find your way to D1, he ran a BIG ad in Hemmings Motor News (the Bible for all things automotive) for years.

I really don't buy the whole Ed saved Delorean argument....One could argue that Hitler single handedly pulled Germany from the ashes of WWI as well.

I'm with the side that says Ed did little to help. When I started poking around the internet in 2003 or 04 the first place I got to was D1. I look it over and thought, oh wow I guess you can still get parts and such... nice. But the website wasn't very easy for me (as a non owner) to get around. Later in searching I found a very simple home page for DMCH (still in its infancy, no where near where it is today) with phone number and a business statement. At the time I was a junior in HS and in an introductory business class. So my first thought was how can this company stay viable with such a unique (and inevitably dwindling) market. So I called DMCH to ask a few questions, and none other that Stephen himself answered the phone. This surprised me because I had read that Stephen Wynn was the president of the company. This was the start of the road to DeLorean ownership for me:

Stephen: "Delorean Motor Company this is Stephen"

Me: "Stephen Wynn? The President"

Stephen: "Yeah"

Me: "Oh, ahh ,why are you answering phones?"

Stephen: "Well, we're a small company"

Me:(keep in mind that I'm all of 15 or 16) "Oh cool, well, I'm a big fan of Deloreans, I have been for a long time. I'd like to own one some day but I was just wondering with such a unique business and specific market and finite amount of parts how do you plan to stay in business?"

Stephen: "Well, we've got a ten year business plan so call us in ten years"

Me: (realizing my tactlessness) Oh, thank you, ahh, thank you for your time. I look forward to giving you a call in the future so I can get a car.

Stephen: "It was a pleasure, and give us call when your ready to get your Delorean"

Because of Stephen's good humor, and pleasantness I was left with a good impression of Deloreans and the community and it solidified my dream of getting a Delorean. Had I spoken with Ed, I doubt, based on this threads postings that he would have been so understanding and patient with dumb kid calling from bum-fuck nowhere questioning his companies viability. Thank you Stephen!!

Soon as you asked that first question to Stephen, if that had been Ed, you would have heard a *click* followed by a dialtone or your cell phone lighting back up to tell you you've just been disconnected.

"All DeLorean parts and accessories shipped anywhere in the world."
-Except the 'Wrong parts.' (Meaning the ones you would like, but you just can't have.)

David mentioned Ed 'single-handedly' kept it alive, and Ed was 'all there was back in the day', which can be confusing when he also gives a deserving mention to Rob Grady (PJ Grady) and Don Steger at DeLorean Motor Company Garden Grove. To be clear, they were NOT a part of Ed's company. -And were there, back in the day, using both hands to keep it alive, etc, etc, etc.

Ed B had the slickest catalog and published a very nice magazine for the club. He was the one promoting the Marque when no one else did. Yes, there were other very good service centers but anyone looking for a Delorean would wind up talking to D1 first. I never met Ed but I am told he was the nicest guy you ever met when you met him in person. He had a certain charm about him. Most of us only know him from getting hung up on, especially if you told him you were east of the Mississippi! He probably figured you weren't going to buy anything from him anyway, his prices were always the highest. Don S always said Ed B was his best referral. When anyone got tired of Ed B they would find their way to Don's shop! Ed B wasn't going to educate anyone over the phone! He considered his time too valuable I guess. In a very real sense we also have him to thank for DMCH. There is a lot of history between D1 and DMCH. Another unsung hero of the world of Deloreans is Sol Shenck. He owned Consolidated and if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have any parts or the '83's. He bought and brought ALL of the parts to the US after DMC went bankrupt. There is a lot of history for those willing to learn it. You have to remember this was all before the Internet. There are not many original owners left who can tell us the whole story and every year there are less and less of the people left who were involved with the companies.

Going off on a tangent here: I removed my DeLorean 1-sourced evaporator last Sunday. It doesn't look like the one I got from DMCMW. Were either of them possibly reproductions or crossed-over from another source? Just curious if anyone knows which evaporators Ed was selling back circa ten years ago. Thanks.

Well, even though we know it's hugely over priced. If someone has the money and really wants it. Who are we to judge. In the end, we end up being jealous that we didn't hoard a few back in the day when they were readily available just so we could flip them for that kind of money down the road. Hind site is 20/20 as they say.

I've never met Mr. Bernstein or had any dealings with DeLorean One but I have to say I am kind of disappointed to hear so many negative things about the man and his company. When I got my DeLorean in August 2012 I also received DeLorean Worlds dating from 1984- 2002. I have read every issue cover to cover and seen Mr. Bernstein's tech articles and role in creating the DeLorean Owners Association. Pointless as it may be, I find myself hoping that the same person whose articles I read isn't the same one I am reading about on this forum. Don't know why I care but it definently sucks that DeLorean customers have one less place to go and one less person with experience out there...

A Father and Son team who were long time mechanics at D1 are attempting to start up a new business servicing Deloreans and former D1 clients. They are starting small with one restoration project at a time from what it looks like. So the D1 Service in not completely gone. However the management style should be markedly improved.

D1 will live on under new management but it looks like Ed and Millie squirreled away some very desirable bits and pieces. I hope when the people that bought D1 and paid for the inventory and expected to get EVERYTHING were not disappointed by the Bernsteins holding back some of the rare stuff. I expect they will be finding more stuff in the closet! Don't be surprised if the auction falls through when the buyer doesn't pay. We may see this item up again. Yes, the answers are funny and certainly NOT to the point. BTW, the box does not look like it is original. All the DMC boxes were stenciled with the DMC logo (not that it matters if all you really want is the binnacle). I guess this is part of their retirement fund.

Don't discount those old boxes. I saw an eBay auction recently where the guy was selling the empty cardboard box the cars toolkit came in. Empty. No tools or anything.

Admittedly it was from a 1960s Ferrari, but he was asking $3000 for it !!!!

Bidding is meant to be fun, but remember that each bid you place enters you into a binding contract.

Might be a good idea for someone to send the seller a message that says they can (and should) sue for breach of contract should the auction not complete as terms state. $1000 isn't beans; that's totally worth a civil suit, especially since it also constitutes inter-state fraud.

I think I'll drop the seller a note informing them of their rights along with a copy of the above post as evidence of intent to defraud.

Regardless of how you fell about the guy...If you don't like him then don't deal with him.
But you DON"T go and mess with someone's money. I WILL be reporting you to ebay & the seller to give him a heads up.
