I have never subscribed to the hood X being caused solely by weight on the hood, but rather by expansion rate differences of the hood and the brace. Putting weight on the hood will certainly not help it, but I think the sun heating up the outer skin over and over causes the X, and the crease about 8" from the front fascia...and in flat hoods, the outline where the gas flap would normally be.
