Well here is my build of my 1982 Delorean, just acquired two days ago. Now starts the long process of getting it back on the road.

Imported the car into Canada Friday night

There was a large car meet the next day (350 cars came out) so I decided to make an appearance.

After the show We dropped off the car to my garage where the major surgery will take place. It is 11X22ft sp it is small but once I get the motorcycle out for the season I feel space will be adequate.

Engine has not run since 2005 I was told by the PO. Parked due to an oil leak on the rear main seal. The transmission feels extremely stiff as well, dropping it will be the first major job.

Now the mystery of a painted car. It was believed that this car was dealer painted, but it could not be confirmed. There was bondo on some areas indicating repairs. I bought the car knowing this risk and with the intent to remove the paint. So I started chipping away at cracking spots on the Rear quarter and Drivers door. The rear quarter looks to be garbage, will need to hunt one down.

So that's a brief overview of the car in my first couple days of ownership. Next weekend It will be up on stands getting the brakes removed to determine if they can be rebuilt, the transaxle removed, and taking a good look at the fuel system. Might start removing the exterior panels as well to be media blasted.

With the damage in that area I'd worry the door was also damaged. Take the headliner off that door and see if you can see any dents. The only way I can see that panel being the only one damaged is if someone had the panel off and dropped it. Or they punched it but that would really hurt.

What type of media are you going to get it blasted with? I can verify that chemical stripping is a lot cheaper but a lot more work. Chemical stripping also has the benefit of preserving the grain if it exists under the paint.

Thanks for the reply. I have read your thread from start to finish I am aware of the method you used! Air craft stripper is a little hard to come by up here though unfortunately. I have narrowed it down to Either Peel Away 1 or media blasting with walnut at a low psi. Not sure if the media blasting would remove the grain (leaning towards yes) but it would be easier than chemical removal and it is very comparable in price (about 70$ an hour).

The bondo on the door has me wondering about the condition of the other panels. And unlike the other panels the door cannot be repaired (no access from behind in some spots). I do have a spare passenger side door though and the hood and right front and rear fenders appear to be in good shape. Just looks like the right side of the car had some work done to it...

But the mechanical portion of the car will be tackled first. Just removed the bondo as it was cracked and I was curious what was underneath!

Thanks! Its actually my friends, I have my bike out already. I have a 88 ninja 250 and his is an 03. Great bike indeed! My plan right now is to get it mechanically sound and go from there. A long term goal will always be an engine swap!

Thats kind of what I figured, dot have a whole lot of bodywork experience but I have seen a dent puller in use. I am still debating the best way to remove the paint. Maybe Peel Away one for the bulk of the paint and take the panels in for blasting the hard to reach areas. The owner of the sandblasting shop here doesn't seem to like soda blasting so that's not an option lol. I will be doing all the blasting myself as his shop is set up for DIY blasting. Kind of neat as the one cabinet has two sets of guns so you and a friend can blast simultaneously and essentially do twice as much in the time.

I want to get the car running but I want to see that stainless steel! Delorean problems I suppose, haha.

But the color striping looks like a hefty job. I wonder why there are holes on the stainless steel?

That that place over the air vent, looks like it was made or prepared to make a BTTF replica where they screw the lighting and mesh lines on.

Get ready to find a Stainess steel welding professional, cause I doubt you would want to replace all panels.

Thanks! The mechanical is not a huge concern of mine as both my father and a very good friend are journeyman mechanics paired with my own (self proclaimed) high mechanical aptitude. But it will take time getting it running like it should again; I look forward to tearing it down in the coming weeks. Haha yes it will! I would love to drive this to my graduation next year, definitely a date to shoot for!

The black section of the frame is just undercoating. Lots of cars had it. I have checked extensively for rust, along with the PO and the frame is a non-issue. I am positively certain the oil leak is only the tip of the iceberg for the mechanical issues (car has sat for a while) but I am fully prepared for that.
As previously mentioned the holes were drilled to use a dent puller to roughly smooth out the panel (they did a poor job). Maybe after stripping the panels I might find one of the POs had someone take baseball bat to their car? Or maybe just a few unusual dents. I dont know, and it makes me very interested to strip the paint. I knew about this risk before purchasing the car. There will be several options to repairing or replacing the panels, I will just strip the car and go from there. I have the car now though and Deloreans are a little sparse up here so I am going to work with what I have!

Only managed to get out one day this weekend instead of two, but I got quite alot done. Got the car up in the air and started removing parts. The whole brake system is pretty bad so I am rebuilding it all. So out came the master and all the calipers. Rotors will be removed soon. Also pulled the clutch master (leaking severely) and the rear axles. Transmission will be dropped soon as well to check the clutch and rear main seal. Excuse the trunk it is quite a mess!

I'm not trying to promote some urban legend, but most of what I read suggests not using cinder blocks to prop your car up with. Not 100% sure that is what I see under your car, but it seems so. Not trying to get anyone worried, but there seems to be much written about this not being a good idea as the blocks aren't meant for this type of concentrated weight, nor is there suitable quality control on the blocks to know whether one or more of yours isn't as strong as the next.

Just a suggestion, but perhaps look at getting something else to put under there?

Safety first! Jack stands are cheap. I'd hate to hear about your car falling and you getting hurt. I knew a guy in high school that used cinder blocks and one of them crumbled and he was pinned under the car.

I am just reading this now about the cinderblocks. Had a few friends bring it up as well. I figured since the bottom of the frame is flat this would work much better than jackstands. I have 6 jackstands ready to be used, but I figured the large contact of the cinderblock would be much safer than the little end on the jack stand. I am open to opinions, someone here has had to had their car up on all fours! I am more than willing to swap the cinderblocks out safety is always #1 concern!

Yes, swap them out. Its almost humorous in your first pic because not only do you see the car on the cinder blocks, but you also see unused jack stands in the same image. Its only almost because of the real danger involved.

The problem with cinder blocks is that they can't take point loads and they will fail catastrophically without warning. I see you have jackstands anyway so use them. The rotors may be cleanable without removing them but the rest of the brake system must be rebuilt. Replace the hoses too. When you do the tranny rebuild or replace the clutch slave cylinder and if you still have the plastic hose, replace it as well. While it is up in the air you might want to also replace the A/C hoses. Inspect the steering bushing and lube the front suspension. Since you removed the half-shafts you may want to lubricate them. Generally I do not recommend doing everything all at once. Too many things apart at the same time and many will get confused or not finish and then parts get lost.
It is also very hard on the budget all at once getting all of those parts. Inspect the radiator especially the left side for green staining. If it is the plastic tank original it should be replaced anyway along with all of the hoses.

Yes, your set-up there is good on stability in the sense that it is not too likely to tip over (flat portion of the frame resting on flat cinder blocks/wood). However, it is the strength of the cinder blocks being of concern. Your car may very well never tip over from being imbalanced, but like others mentioned, the cinder blocks are not strong enough to take the load and if or when they fail, there may be no warning.

You can achieve decent balance with jack stands too, you just need to put some extra focus on where you place the wood going between the top of the jack stand and the frame.

It also never hurts to have redundancy, and if you're after something big and flat and stable, you could put whatever amount of wood you want piled in a similar fashion to your cinder blocks under additional corners of the car/frame next to the jack stands.

In order of the materials in which I would trust the strength would be steel, then wood, then cinder blocks. And the cinder blocks are a distant third.

Thanks Dave, that is roughly my plan of attack. The hoses to the calipers will be replaced and the clutch hose will be replaced with the stainless line. Not overly concerned about A/C right now. The front suspension will be regreased and all rubber components checked for cracking. The axles will get re-packed. I know what your saying about taking it all on at once but I want to order my parts in large batches.

Thanks for the concerns and recommendations. I will take out the blocks and put it on jack stands tonight. So just put a 2x4 on the top of the jack then? If I am not happy with the jacks Ill buy some railroad ties and put them in place of the cinder blocks.

Up on jack stands now. I dont know why I didnt think of putting a piece of wood between the jacks and frame, feels plenty stable now. Just a bonehead moment I guess. Thanks for educating me about the cinderblocks guys!

Are you planning to remove the engine soon or just the trans? Ill probably get some flak for saying this but I always prefer to remove the engine and trans as one unit rather than just the trans. This goes for nearly every vehicle Ive worked on. Trying to re-spline a heavy transmission to a clutch while holding it over head is never fun or easy. When I pulled the trans out of a friend's D it was huge pain to get out and worse to get back in. Now if the car was on a lift that might be doable.

It is the plan to just drop the trans with the engine intact but I have thought of pulling the whole engine. I do have access to a hoist. Since the coolant will be drained and there is very little wiring that might be a better idea. hmmm you have me thinking here.

.....with all the comments on cinder blocks, but you might want to reconsider wood blocks between jacks and car. I used to use that method until by nearly perfect Audi allroad fell onto stands when wood split. It's now nearly perfect with big dent in bottom. I now use a square piece of 2x12 under jack stands. Unless you have 4 rubber isolators up to the task, I'd stick with the wood. The bare jack stands would stress the epoxy on the frame and start to crack it or even bend the frame slightly at the stress points. I use soft pine as my isolator and have been for 14 years. Replace the dedicated pieces every few years as they start to wear out.

Thanks again to the opinions, but I feel pretty confident with the jackstands now. It is a good point the wood could split, so I picked out a half decent board before using the jacks.
Anyway got a little more progress done, removed the exhaust and rear fascia. I wanted to further dabble with the idea of potentially pulling the engine as well as take a closer look at the leak on the front of the block. Does anyone know where this would be coming from? I know its hard to tell from the picture but I figure it may be a common location. I found the belt tensioner to be severely bent. Taking a look at the adjustment it looks like this was inevitable. Also took a look at the engine wiring. I will have to get out my soldering iron and tidy up some of the connections.

From some quick searching it looks like my timing cover gasket is the culprit. So I will be taking the cover and the valve covers off and replacing all those gaskets. Feel free to correct me I'm wrong!

With that much oil by the water pump its quite possible there is a good amount of oil in the valley too. It was much easier to hook up the hoist with the intake manifold removed.

+1, not to mention there are quite a few connections that need to be undone behind the motor that are way easier to reach with the manifold off. Vacuum, water, electrical, fuel... And the motor is probably about 4-6" shorter with the manifold off, which does help with clearances.

Well the intake manifold is coming off, as I will be replacing the waterpump (im 99% sure its still the original unit). I wont be surprised to find a nice oil-coolant mix in there haha.

Hey Josh,

When you get to it, take a closer look at your ballast resistor wiring and confirm it is right. Yours looks a little different than the standard resistor and normally that bottom left connection is doubled up on a pin on the right side (i.e. lower left is empty).

Interesting. I wouldn't really know better. I have a feeling this car will be full of lots of surprises regarding the wiring. I haven't bothered hooking up a battery yet; I want to have a thorough look over all the wiring before any voltage is applied. With that being said could I both you to take a snapshot of your firewall for reference?

Haha... of course! I know this only because of experience. Mine was wired wrong originally and the car wouldn't start until I figured it out (first thing I remember posting on the forum :) ).

Went to do a compression test yesterday, and I figured I would take a look over the engine wiring again before I started turning it over. I found many melted and dry rotted wires. Some connectors are in very questionable shape as well. Looks like this harness has gone up in smoke before especially around the coil resistor area. So I decided to just remove both engine wiring harnesses to fully assess and repair them. This involved removing the intake, that was fun lol. The VOD looks like what I was expecting, but with some oil as well.
So right now I am going to attempt to fix the wiring harness and check over the harnesses in the fuse box area. One thing that worries me is the reason why the harness is melted... I might fix the harness, plug it in, and it melt itself again. Also found several mystery connections, those will have to be sorted out.

The old hoses tend to develop small cracks over time, and moving everything around out of position tends to accelerate the wear. If you start smelling fuel or notice wet spots on your fuel distributor those are the signs of trouble.

Yeah I did notice that and it scared me a little. The engine has an oil leak right now, but I believe it is coming from the timing cover. Ill have to do some further investigating.

I will address the fuel lines later. I only took off the line to the csi to help maneuver it out of the way, and the banjo bolt and connection seemed fine. As for the line its hard to tell until the car is running

Got some more work done today. Started off with removing the main engine wiring harness and a compression test. Since I removed the engine wiring for repair, I ran some extra welding cable I had to manually jump the starter. The compression test gave good results: 1-165, 2- 190, 3-180, 4- 185, 5- 185, 6-170. The readings are a bit high as I dumped a cap full of oil in each cylinder as it hasnt been running since at least 2005. So with good compression, I decided to continue digging into the engine. I removed the water pump and y-pipe. I busted one bolt on the y-pipe, what is the best way to remove this? I hear it is very common due to steel bolts in an aluminum block. With everything out of the way I sucked up the coolant and oil, and found an interesting gob of epoxy in the block. It appears this is the source of the leak, so I have a hole in my block. I cranked the engine again and saw very small bubbles forming in the area I removed the epoxy from. So I am happy I found the issue, but it will be a pain to fix. I will be tig welding plates over the two areas as indicated in the last picture.

After thinking about the engine issues a little more, I decided to go the 3.0 route with Megasquirt. I will be doing a complete mechanical/electrical writeup when I am completed the swap. The original engine needs the hole to be fixed but I have found several people that performed the fix of welding the plates and it continued to leak from other areas as time went on. The wiring is terrible, the entire harness needed to be gone over and fixed or replaced. Also I am not a fan of mechanical fuel injection. I have an engine lined up to be picked up mid week, so I decided to pull the 2.8 out and check out the transmission. When we pulled off the pressure plate we found the clutch was brand new but the running surfaces were very poor looking (anyone know what would cause the surfaces to look like this?). Looks like the clutch disk was replaced and nothing else, strange.

There a few different ways to remove the broken Y-pipe bolt.

1. Carefully drill down the center with small 1/8 drill bit. then progressively upsize the hole for the biggest EZ-out screw extractor without getting into the aluminum. then apply HEAT (small bottle torch (Mapp gas) or OXY/Acetylene)You have to the aluminum lug area. This will help expand the aluminum around the hole and COOK some of the corrosion between the threads.

2. You have enough of the old bolt sticking out that you may be able clamp a small Vise-grip on it. Then heat the surrounding area and work it loose and out.

3.You have enough of the old bolt sticking out that you may be able to MIG weld a nut to the stub. The heat from the welding will transfer down into the bolt thread and also help shock it loose.

Picked this up today! 1990 3.0. Will start tearing it down this weekend to check the condition of everything as well as cleaning it all up. Came with an entire set of shop manuals as well, the wiring diagrams are going to be very helpful when wiring up the Megasquirt.

Since I do have a welder I would probably try that before the vice grips. But both good methods, they will come in handy sometime in the near future haha.

Well it has been almost a month, and alot has been done. I can say the car is now fully stripped down. Got the panels all off. I have come to discover EVERY PANEL HAS BONDO. Even the bumpers. THe only logical conclusion I can come to is the car was vandalized. As of right now I have a new T Panel, Pass Door, Pass front fender, Hood, and Rear Drivers Quarter lined up to be purchased or already purchased. The rest of the panels have been deemed reasonable by looking at them from the back. With the exception of the LFF. It is straight but it appears to have had another LFF grafted to it, then welded with steel filler. All in all making a pretty crappy repair. But I can work with it for the price of a new fender. I am still unaware of the condition of the door, because like the other panels it has bondo. Both the bumpers are cracked as well. The passenger door had an alignment problem I was aware of during the purchase, we figured the door could have been bent or the roof box rotten. The roof box looks good and the door is at the top of adjustment. I think it is a combination of poor adjustment and a slightly bent door. Will know better when the new door is on. I found some more surprises when removing the bondo filled windshield trim: The windshield is barely attached. This will be fixed when I can get the car rolling and to a glass shop. (long time)
Onto the engine, the 2.8 is fully disassembled as some of you guys have may seen by my for sale thread. It was a good experience taking apart the engine for the 3.0. The 3.0 has good compression and is now torn down as well, I just need to get the covers powdercoated and some seals in the mail and it will be going back together.
Last comes the frame. When I bought the car the PO had touched up the front end. So I concentrated on the rear, with the engine out I found several cracks in the epoxy that I grinded away and primed over. However after this I removed the gas tank and rad and took a more thorough look at the front of the frame. I found there to be a significant amount of rust. No holes, but if it is left like this for a few more years there will be. Closer inspection of other parts of the frame showed minor cracking of the epoxy in numerous places. So I went ahead and removed all the suspension and dropped the frame. I am currently researching galvanizing which I can do locally, however removing the epoxy is a large hurdle. May end up shipping my frame to DPI (2700km) or DMCMW(1700km) for stipping and galvanization depending on cost.

I am somewhat realistic, I know this car is a project and it will never be done. Ever!

But its funny you should ask this question. When I bought it I figured, oh I will just pop in a new clutch, slave, and master, fuel pump and accumulator and it will be on the road. Running start of June.

So I pull it apart and it is obvious i am very very wrong. Need to rebuild the brakes, replace the master, refurbish the steering rack, new rad and water pump, etc and fix this oil leak coming from my engine. Running start of July.

So I look at the engine more, find out there is a hole in my block. Started taking out the engine wiring and it is all melted. My dad came and checked out my suspension and I need new shocks, balljoints, and some bushings. Now aiming to have it running by September.

And finally I started touching up the cracked epoxy around the engine. Wire wheeled it all off and primed it. Sitting under the car i started to look around. Crack here, there, and a bunch of rust hidden inside the fuel tank area. Well I guess I am dropping the frame and getting it repaired and refinished.

So that brings me to now. I am hoping to get a rolling chassis together in the next 1.5 months or so. Then I can plunk the body back on. I am doing a complete restoration of the frame and everything connected to it (suspension, brakes, trans, engine, engine wiring, cooling system) so that will take a while. I hope to have a roller with bare stainless panels by September. I am going back to university in the fall so it will make it tough to have time for the car. But it will be mostly wiring and tuning as well as all the other small loose ends that take a long time. It would be nice to have it running for my grad next may, but who knows.

I do know that I literally cannot find any more surprises. This is slightly comforting haha.

4 years and who knows how many 1000's of hrs later Im not finding any more big surprises but the list (that I purposely haven't written down to avoid depressing myself) hasn't seemed to shrink.

I suppose I havent dug that far into the interior and body wiring yet. But that is minor compared to all these mechanical issues. Well I am hoping to put together a drool-worthy chassis, stay tuned!

Been holding off a bit for an update as I did something many people may think is not a good idea. I cut the frame. I removed the rear frame extension in order to get the frame to fit in the burn off oven. The frame is being galvanized, so the old epoxy needed to be removed. I found a local burn off oven but its dimensions were 6x6x10. The frame is 12 feet long, and about 10.5ft after being cut. So they managed to squeeze it in and boy did it do a number on the epoxy, it just flaked all off. Cooked at 700F for 4 hours. Anyways I got the frame back and had my friend who is a very good welder stitch it back together, it turned out great. Thanks to a tip from Dave from DMCMW with the alignment plates everything is within spec just like before and with no measuring involved. I checked over the rest of the frame carefully. Filled some pin holes and replaced a bent piece in the front frame extension. Otherwise the frame is good to go to the galvanizer. The fuel tank closing plate has been attacked by brake fluid unfortunately. I will be getting an aluminum or stainless replacement lasercut once I get around to drawing it up.

The doors came off as well. I am planning on replacing both doors, so I had no choice. Inspected the roof box and it appears to be pretty bad. I plan to redo it in the future, but for now I will clean it up the best I can. I did not see any rust holes so I think it will serve me a little longer! Also, I removed both of the doors and torsion rods myself. It is possible, but not very fun. Great to have a helper to help handle the door when over extending and removing it.

I also finished the last of my sandblasting (the big stuff at least). There is a local DIY sandblasting business that has been awesome for this project.

Got my wolfhead wheel. It will be a while before I can use it. In the meantime just practicing with junk panels.

Took the fascias to get the paint removed. Found large cracks in both fascias, this can be repaired but it's another expense. The facias also contained alot of bondo.

I picked up the Zinc plated parts from the plater. I gave them greasy, rusty, disgusing parts and I got back these wonderfully shiny pieces. I was very impressed with the quality of work.

Finally, the powdercoater sent me a quick picture of some of the parts I had sent off. They look awesome, very impressed. Much more parts to come :)

Yep makes easy work of the panel. Took about 30 min per fascia (yours would take much less time as it was not slathered in bondo)

Those are my motivation to start putting the engine together right there!

Once again, its been a while since the last update. I keep it much more regularly updated on my FB. I dont really get many comments on this thread so I forget to update it.

Anyway, lots has happened. First of all I received all my powder coated parts and they look great. Not too bad for a guy out of his garage!

I mounted the bumpers back on the car. They need repairs. Like I said, every single body piece is damaged. I am on the fence right now if I should just get new fascias or fix the current ones.

I have been keeping myself very busy sourcing panels for my car. RFF, LRQ, T panel, and L door from DPI and The remaining panels I sourced locally. My local I mean 500 miles away, haha. My LFF is in very bad shape. But due to budget I cannot buy a new one. I am just going to strip mine and deal with the eyesore for the time being. The hood is also going to be stripped. It is not obvious in the picture but the one I purchased has a very prominent X and a dent. just bought it for the mean time as it was a very reasonable price.

I spent pone weekend cleaning up and resealing the roof box, bolting it down, and repainting the engine bay. Everything turned out very nice, I am quite happy. Before re-installing the quarter panels I had to address the holes in my pontoons that were causing water to enter the car. After searching around the junkyard I came upon a cap for the hub of a steel wheel off of a chevy sprint. I measured it, seemed good. I was quite ticked when I put it in the pontoon as it snapped right in nice and firmly. I topped it off with some silicone but it sealed up very good.

My friend came over and we started assembling the engine. We swapped over the lower crankcase closely following the eagle manuals so the bottom end is all buttoned up. I got excited and set everything else on the engine for now!

Finally, I got back the frame. It has been quite the process. If anyone wants any pointers on galvanizing a frame I can help you out, just asked. The process did not go very smoothly so I learned alot of what to dos and what not to dos. But I have the frame now and it looks great. I set it up in the garage and layed out all the parts. I proceeded to spend three evenings measuring bolts, threads, and referencing the DMC website for fasteners as EVERYTHING is getting replaced. Just placed the fastener order today. I'm excited to start bolting things together, everything is so clean!

I had similar damage to my rear bumper when I lost my steering and did some off roading. One whole corner was almost ripped off. I removed the fascia and bonded fiberglas tape to the backside with some plastic bumper glue to hold it together. Used the same glue on the outside to build up the surface to prep for paint. Turned out ok, not perfect. I like your idea of popriveting some backing for stiffness, wish I thought of that.

That is a good point, I definitely will add this to my resume, as it has been the biggest project I have ever managed. The industry contacts I have made (powdercoating, machining, galvanizing, fasteners, blasting, shipping, etc) will also come in handy in the future, this I am certain. Learned alot through this project. I also used to be one that was scared to contact people over the phone. Now I can pick up the phone and give someone crap!

Thanks for sharing your experience! If it is repaired it will be getting plastic welded. The pop rivets were added from the PO, he just riveted a piece of aluminum to the back and bondoed over everything. Not a very good fix.

Last weekend was a busy one! With the help of my dad and a good friend, the entirely of the suspension is mounted. We also rebuilt and mounted the brakes.

On saturday a friend and I tacked the rear. It was great to have an extra set of hands.

The steering shaft and u joints were ordered from martin. They are just as foreign as yourself, haha.

The 3l is rated for 150hp/170lbft. With exhaust and my custom intake setup not to mention the advantages of a full custom tune via MS I should be able to surpass these numbers.

Alex, if you are referring to the snub washers they do bug me a little. I should have thrown them in with the parts I sent off for plating but I was a tad unorganised and overlooked them. But oh well, they still function perfectly fine I suppose.

An update of the happenings of the last two weeks:

When I bought the car my goal was to have it driving for a local car show at the end of the summer. While I did not have the whole thing there, I had half. I met up with another owner and the two cars were a big hit! Many people that had never seen a delorean before. I am very fortunate to have access to a car hauler, and the chassis was my first major tow with my truck. Everything went well! The turnout for the show was 1000+ cars

And this previous weekend the chassis met the body. I had a lot of extra hands so it went very smoothly. We jacked it up quite high, four cinder blocks would be fine if the car was spun around. But it all worked out in the end.

Started the wiring process. Broke up the stock harness. I am currently drawing up the wiring schematic for MS. All the MS related electronics will be mounted in the ecu tray behind the driver's seat. I will be using a 22 pin bulkhead connector to pass the wires through the firewall on the bulkhead panel. Basically designing the entire MS setup to be soldered and mounted to the tray outside of the car and take about a hour to install, wiring and all.

Installed the alternator correctly for the 3.0. This utilities the stock delorean alternator mount with 9mm machined off the rear. A spacer (bushing in my case) is then added in front of the bracket.

Started the door adjustment process. I am very much learning as I go along with this car. Obtaining information about things can be like pulling teeth sometimes so I take the long way to do things. I realized there was to and fro adjustment in the doors, but the hinges were siliconed in place and the bolts and nuts rusted. So I removed each door (that I had installed a few months prior), all the hinges, and re-tapped all the holes and replaced the studs. The hinges are now capable of two a fro movement. I got the drivers side door closing somewhat OK and the passenger side is way off. I have adjusted everything: strikers, striker cages, hinges to and fro, hinges in and out, and moved around the shim stacks. However something was still wrong and it was brought to my attention my windshield may be at fault, I did some measurements and the front of the roof is sagging, as the sealant around the windshield has failed. I will now be removing the windshield (crossing my fingers it comes out in one piece), jacking up the roof, adjusting the doors to a proper fit, then re installing the windshield. Big process, but my doors should close beautifully afterwards. The passenger side door will not even close at all. It seems to be one thing after another with this car, anything that could go wrong has. If this car was in anyone else's hands I would be confident in saying it would be parted out with the small amount of usable parts it had. My car is a perfect example why you need to educate yourself about these cars before buying, and to not buy sight unseen. My car was way, way more work than originally planned and I grossly overpaid. However, nothing I can do about it now and I have an extremely comprehensive restoration.

Finally, I rolled the car outside last weekend to see that SS shine. Had quite a few people stop buy and take pictures already, lol. The car is very dirty, I will be giving it a through scrub down in the spring. For now ill continue turning wrenches...

Well I haven't updated this thread in a long, long time so here goes!

Over this winter i picked away at the wiring harness for the MegaSquirt. I basically ripped out anything engine related and started from scratch. Britishwiring.com was a lifesaver! I am very picky when it comes to wiring so I integrated all the MS fuses and relays into the stock delorean fuse compartment. I also utilized the bulkhead connectors to pass through all the engine related wiring, for a neat and stock like setup.

Some other engine related items that I custom fabricated were the crank position sensor, throttle body adapter, and coolant fans. I spent quite a while designing the CPS but I think it turned out great. I have the trigger wheel welded to the crank pulley (not bolted like many others) and the sensor itself utilities the exhaust hanger mount and is fully adjustable. I adapted a ford 5.0 throttle body as it is a very common unit so if I ever go forced induction and need more bore I can get a new TB just about any size I want. It also has a built in IAC so that cuts down on hose routing. The cooling fans are from summit and I fabricated up some mounts, i will make up a proper shroud at a later date for better cooling. If anyone is interested in any of these parts I would love to help you out. If you are doing a 3.0 swap the CPS is a major hurdle and I would gladly make up a kit for anyone interested.

Something else not engine related... Taillight boards. I tried out my stock ones and they worked terribly and I need to feel confident my brake lights are going to work! So I measured out the board and cut it out of 1/16" aluminum and riveted bulb sockets to it. Snaps in like the the original boards and I replaced the flaky connector with a weatherpack connector. All the red lenses have dual filament bulbs so they are park and brake lights.

After i got the engine all together it was ready for the car to fire! It was slow going at the start as I had the firing order all mixed up but we sorted it out. We found the firing order to be BAC for the edis ignition, not ACB as stated in the mega manual. It fired up and ran well for a first start. It ran very lean though, and I struggled with this for a few weeks. A forum member (opethmike) helped me sort this out and boy did it run great after. I also had issues with a faulty MS box, so i ended up purchasing another and swapping them out. My original box had dead IAC outputs.

The last major hurdle was the windshield. My door alignment was terrible (passenger door would not close) so I figured it needed to be re-installed. I had an installer all lined up and as we were pulling the windshield my brother noticed a major crack in the a-pillar. It became quickly apparent this was the issue. So I loaded up the car and sent it to a gentleman that does fiberglassing in his spare time. He did a wonderful job and its holding up great. The repair is barely noticeable and will be entirely unnoticeable once the trim goes back on. I would do the glassing myself but I don't trust myself for structural fixes yet.

With the windshield installed it was just all the little stuff to go to get the car fully road worthy. Working out electrical gremlins (many in the exterior lighting circuits), getting the air and heater working, exterior trim, alignment, etc etc. It was a hectic few weeks but I got everything together and did something a bit crazy. I took the car to DCS! Preliminary road testing before the trip was about 400km. The car worked great and I fixed issues as they occurred. I would have tested the car out more before the trip but I just got it running right about a week before the trip. So, with crossed fingers I embarked on the 5,500km round trip and the car performed great! Never let me down or left me stranded. I met lots of great people over the weekend and even scored third in the engine swap category (in good company with the famous LS1 and Acura 3.2 swaps)!

Something else not engine related... Taillight boards. I tried out my stock ones and they worked terribly and I need to feel confident my brake lights are going to work! So I measured out the board and cut it out of 1/16" aluminum and riveted bulb sockets to it. Snaps in like the the original boards and I replaced the flaky connector with a weatherpack connector. All the red lenses have dual filament bulbs so they are park and brake lights.

Bringing up an older post here, but I'm in a similar process of replacing the taillight boards. I know new boards are not that expensive, but I want to do some things with dual filament sockets. When I saw this, I was in the middle of meticulously measuring the stock board. Now I'm wondering if you might have a CAD file for the aluminum replacement you made and would be willing to share?

Hi Ron,

Here is the .DWG file for the taillight board. Be mindful of the thickness, I think I had it cut out of 14ga instead of 16ga, so the clips on the end didnt fit very well. It is a starting point for you at the very least.

For the bulbs, the stock lights use single filaments across the board. I used dual filaments for the brake and tail lights, as a effort to increase visibility. You can see this in the picture the sockets with the two wires. The dual filament sockets also have a wider base so I had to clock the sockets off the other holes a little and drill new ones.

All in all it works very well and I was able to increase the light output in the rear, something you cannot do with the stock tail light boards. I wired everything to a weatherpack connector to further ensure the lights have a solid connection. Something you can never be sure of with the stock setup.

I'm not sure I follow the wider base issue. Out of curiosity, I miked an 1156 socket against a 1157 socket and they were basically identical. Also miked a new 1156 bulb against a new 1157 bulb and they had the same diameter base (about 15.15).

Wait a second. I think just caught on. It's the mounting tabs of the sockets where the securing holes were wider with the 1157. I've noticed there are quite a few Chinese suppliers and they have a variety of mounting tabs. There doesn't seem to be a real standard for the mounting.

Sounds like you have it figured. These are most certainly Chinese; ebay specials.
