I want to overhaul my AC system which is going to involve installing new high and low pressure lines. I'd also like to replace the accumulator in the process. If I use the high and low pressure lines made for the later vins on my car (vin 1643) can I also use the later style AC accumulator?

Because it's an early vin it doesn't have any of the high pressure switch but that doesn't really affect the accumulator does it? Its on the line that goes from the evaporator to the condenser.

As far as I can tell, the two accumulators have the same fittings; the older ones just connect to the low pressure hose on the bottom.

If you are replacing the low pressure hose with one designed for a later VIN, then you must change to a newer accumulator as well. The newer accumulator only effects the hose length and nothing else, so you should have no problems doing that switch and saving a few bucks over buying an older style accumulator.

As for the high pressure switch, it won't matter which style accumulator you have. If you get John's hoses, he has the hub that has both a high pressure switch and blow off valve. Just wire the high pressure switch in series with the low pressure switch and you should be all set!
