View Full Version : Suspension Source Of Leak - Rear Shock?

Gave my D a check over tonight and spotted this leak (appears it has been there two weeks as it has dripped in a different place the last three times I have parked her).

I can't find any fluids anywhere except the bottom of the rear right shock, which you can see a drip forming on.

Could there be any other source that would cause a build-up there?

Hoping it is just the shock since I have new ones on the way anyway.

Shock leaking or brake calliper / hose leak is all it could be in that area really.

Did you buy some spax shocks, or different brand?

Check your brake line from the radius arm to the caliper.

Are you sure it's oil or is it coolant? That's where the overflow hose usually pukes out, right near that area. Looks greenish but could be oil and the color of your floor playing tricks on me.

Looks like coolant to me too. Maybe your overflow is over-filled?

No, contrary to your remark: the overflow spits near the facia firstly on the frame rail (as the overflow hose is too short).
It may drip down a bit more to the front, depending on the car's stance.
I've never seen it drip near the shocks.

Besides that, the colour of the puddles on the floor are showing more oily than coolantly (greenish/blueish).

It is the paint on my garage floor combined with the flash of the camera that is giving you that impression I think guys, it is absolutely not coolant.

I have just finished jacking her up and checking over the area, the brake and line are clean as a whilst (per my overhaul of all that last year, so was worth double-checking). The problem is entirely local to the bottom of the shock so looks like it is giving out.

Here is another photo I took whilst checking her over to clarify...

Having finished (well, aside from fine tuning) my complete suspension overhaul I can confirm the leak was indeed the shock.
