I have a cold and a hot start problem. The car has 14,000 total miles on it. Once it's starts, it runs great. I replaced the O rings in the fuel distributor. I have a relatively new accumulator (about 200 miles on it). New fuel pump and check valve installed.

I had John Harvey go through the WRU, CSV, FV, & pressure regulator and the injectors. He cleaned and reconditioned the CSV, the FV and the injectors. New fuel filter. Was hunting, adjusted co mixture.

When I try to start the car, it's starts then dies. I have to crank it for about 5 to 10 seconds before it will start. When it starts, it chocks on it for about 6 to 7 seconds, then it runs fine. (cold or warm)

Any thoughts.

It ended up being a bad check valve.
Goes to show that even a new part can be bad.

Thank you again for all you help.

My car appears to be doing the same thing. Upon a cold start it will start immediately start but then die. I have to crank for a couple of seconds after that to get it to fire up again. Once it starts again it sort of runs like crap for a couple of seconds then smooths out and runs fine. What is the check valve you replaced? Do you have a part number so that I could look up location in engine and price for a replacement part?

Thanks!

From the symptom and the fix it sounds like it was a bad check valve in the fuel pump or fuel pump line.

Not all of the replacement pumps have had good check valves the past few years so folks have been adding inline check valves on main fuel line as an upgrade/fix or they have replaced the pump again with a pump that has a good valve in it.

Where is the best place to install a fuel check valve? And what are the size of our fuel lines? 3/8"?
Pics anyone?

Your problem sounds more like a non functioning CSV or thermo switch.

Get some k-jet gauges and see where your system pressure is at.

Don't cut hoses until you know for sure you need to. Falling system pressure could be as many as 5 problems.

Here's where/how I installed mine.
(I have the new DMC pump/sender combo).

Jump your rpm relay and see how it starts when cold. I don't see how a bad check valve can hurt cold starts. Hot starts YES, cold starts no.

I have the same hot start issue. I have to crank it for a while before it starts and this only started happening recently. Cold start fires right up, but the car stumbles/spudders on acceleration for a good minute or two before it warms up. I have Hervey's fuel pump/sending unit combo but I'm not sure about the check valve? I got a new accumulator and fuel filter on the way from DMCH, so I hope I didn't just waste $$$ because i didn't even think about the check valve.

Hi, the new DMC pump already has a check valve - why did you install the additional one? Thanks!

Have same problems, both cold and hot start. Did various checks pointing at Fuel Accumulator membrane shot (spitting fuel fromt he rear out under pressure while cranking). A new one is on the way, will report here.

Yes, last year replaced the fuel accumulator and now starts immediately!
