Cruising in the D lately has been a lot of fun, except on road trips. I like to shift around the 3000 mark to get as much "oomph" as I can to get up to speed... the only caveat is: my fuel gauge just drops like a lead plumb bob. On the other hand, if I shift at 2200-2500, needle barely moves. Hell, I go through 1/4 of a tank when passing. Now, my fuel gauge is pretty accurate and stays put unless I have a nose high angle of attack. My car is tuned properly (or so I think) and I normally have good fuel economy... if I drive like an old asian lady
Has anyone here had similar expierences?

Yes shifting for max power in city driving will bring your MPG way down. Really gets bad if you keep the RPMs high by leaving it in a lower gear. Expect 60 to 70% of the MPG you would get driving like an "old lady".

What mpg are you getting? I shift 3000 - 3500 lost of the time & do mostly highway driving with little stop & go & get about 25mpg.when I drive in town, I shift around 2000-2500.

I had my friends Tom from LA over and let him compare my D to his Stage 1.
Normally I "do" some 30-32 Miles/Gallon.
Letting Tom do some testing (acceleration and higher highway speeds) brought down the more fuel economical figures :).
Driving at higher speeds, fast acceleration and going through the gears revving high (4500-5500) up to those high speeds (108 Mi) makes for 21.5 Miles/Gallon.
Well, that's the cost of having fun.

If my calculations are correct, I'm seeing ~26 mpg. If I hammer it, 17 mpg on average... that's the Mario Andretti side of me
