A Restoration With A Twist.

As some of you may know, I'm having 4915 refurbished by Josh Bengston at DPI. He's replaced or refurbished practically everything mechanical. She will have a Spec II engine, ceramic coated exhaust, new transaxle. galvinized frame. I've opted to replace the Left Front Fender which had a small dent made worse by me trying to fix it. The front fascia will be replaced and the outside of the car will be as new. Josh is doing his customary magic under the car and I decided to replace the front fascia and LFF to address the only blemishes in the stainless. I'm spending way too much money on her but hopefully I'll relive that feeling of driving her home new on July 18, 1983 which is my birthday. Best birthday present I ever got. Although she has over 365,000 miles on her I'm gonna treat her as if she were brand new with zero miles. I'll do a better job of keeping and organizing receipts and important stuff. I plan on visiting this site regularly with updates, photos and reports of how she's doing.

Now for the twist ... July 18, 1983 was my birthday, my 40th birthday. I'll do the math. In a couple of months I will be 70 years old. Most folks, at my age, are selling their cars or giving it to their grandsons. Not me, I will resume my habit of driving the D every day even if it's just around the block. I'm in pretty good shape even though I have had Parkinsons for some years now and it doesn't interfere with me driving. So wish me luck, I'm gonna need it. :Headspin:

On July 18,1983 I was 50 years old, having just celebrated my 50th birthday 4 days ealier, and enjoying my first summer as a DeLorean owner. So, doing the math, I will be 80 this July and have been an owner for slightly over 30 years. I keep toying with the idea of selling my DeLorean (16867) and then reality sets in. I just can't! Yes, I know it is "just a car", . . . . yeah, right. As long as I am capable of driving, I'll continue to enjoy the perverted relationship I have with this "inanimate object". For years I lived ina an environment where winter driving was out of the question, so I don't have quite the mileage that you do, only 145,000 miles on it, but I do expect to see 200,000 at some point.

These cars were made to drive and provide enjoyment. That is just what you and I are allowing them to do.

Gosh guys, thanks for the words of encouragement. Getting older has it's downside but there are some things that can be enjoyed at any age. The Delorean is one. When I slide in the seat, pull the door down I enter another world. Over the years I have enjoyed owning some nice cars ... four Corvettes, a couple of Jaguars and even a '72 Pantera but, honestly, they all pale when compared to the Delorean. You become an instant celebrity when you drive up to a place where there are people and that just makes me feel good about owning such an iconic car. Of course there are more important things in life but when it comes to what car I drive there is no comparison to a Delorean. I'll add this for the younger owners ... that feeling you have towards your Delorean will only intensify. Think of it as a bottle of wine, it gets better with age.

And the amazing thing is you don't have to be wealthy to enter the club. I just don't believe Ferarri, Lamborghini et al owners are as satisfied as us. For one thing you have to be damn well off to afford one. Then you look at your car not as something to embrace but merely another possession.

Like Jack and Dick I guess I'm an old guy too, 70. Dick is an old friend and we, with a couple of others friends, have driven these cars through much of the U.S. and western Canada. These cars are reliable if maintained properly. For many years we'd set aside about two weeks each summer to tour some part of the country in these cars. I, like Dick, keep toying with selling the car but after 31 years I share a history with this car that is hard to part with.

I've accepted the fact that breathing new life into my Delorean is a time consuming process. At the end of this month 4915 will be at DPI 10 months. I have added a couple of things to the build that adds more time and more $ to the project and it takes time and it's gonna be worth it ... that's what I keep telling myself ... it's gonna be worth it. Josh tells me it's getting close ... now counting down in weeks rather than months. I'm ready to count the days! I've already got a carrier standing by with an enclosed trailer to bring her home. I thought about flying up and driving her home but I nixed the idea because I don't think a thousand mile trip would be good for the new engine and probably not good for me.

Anyway, I've missed a couple of car shows I wanted to enter 4915 in ... that bummed me out but I got to thinking. I just got my '96 Jaguar XJS convertible back from it's 100,000 mile check-up and looking good. So I entered it in a near-by car show and much to my surprise the Jag won a couple of nice trophies (a second and peoples choice). That took some of the sting out of the D's absence.

So, here I am counting down to D-day and Josh Bengston is one of the most important people in my life.

As to the mileage record, I used to claim that 4915 and 16647 combined would be up there then I heard of an owner somewhere in the middle east with over 500,000 miles.


I am trying to keep a watch on unique DeLoreans, and high mileage is one aspect. I have 4915 down for 370k miles. If you ever find the VIN of the 500k mile car, please let this forum know.

I also love hearing stories like yours. Something similar happened to me which sort of parallels your DeLorean story, only swap the DeLorean for skiing. I met an elderly gentleman like you (70-ish) at Heavenly ski resort in Lake Tahoe a while back. He was skiing alone, and a bit slower than me, but we somehow got to talking. I learned of his age, and his attitude, and retirement skiing. I thought at the time, I'm gonna be like him when I get older, and ski my life away in my retirement until I can't do it anymore. I'll always remember that man, and what an inspiration he was for me, at a time when I needed it. At that time, I didn't own a DeLorean.

I'm reporting in like I promised. Not much to add on the restoration but at my age I've become more patient when things don't move as quickly as they should. I don't think I've ever had more anxiety and anticipation about anything ... well, the birth of my twin daughters 40 years ago was a pretty anxious time. It seems I have always had a special relationship with cars. I remember well the first time cars became important to me. I was eight years old and my mother owned a kennel where she bred and raised Pekingese dogs. One day a man came by to pick up the puppy he had bought and while he and Mom extolled the the virtues of 'Chang' I wandered over to the man's car. As I got closer the man politely said I should not touch the car and get fingerprints on it. Of course my mother positioned herself between me and the car and I remember peeking around her at the car. It was black and so shiny it looked wet. Then I looked at our car, a 1951 Kaiser and there was definitly a difference ... the man who bought 'Chang' was driving a 1951 Jaguar XK120 and I was hooked. I don't remember the name of any other dog Mom sold but I remember 'Chang' well. That was the day I became aware of special cars especially those early Jaguar XK's. I then embarked on a life filled with the love of cars. I've had a few but, but honestly, my DeLorean rests atop the heap of cars I have owned. I believe John had me in mind when he launched the DMC-12 and I will forever be grateful that he did.

So ... so, here I am waiting for Josh to call saying 4915 is finished. In the meantime, emboldened by last weeks showing, I'm entering the XJS in a British car show in Hot Springs this weekend and I will be spending a lot of time getting it ready, making it shine til it looks wet ... I just love cars and if the owner of the XK120 was concerned with fingerprints I could show him concern!

Okay, in an exchange of emails with Josh at DPI he told me 4915 should be finished in early July.
That sounds like a long time to me but it's not as long as it has been. I've bought several items
I'll start installing when she comes home ... the all important Flux Capacitor, third brake light
and the stainless steel label set (unbelievable quality).

Of course we have that long running thread about stupid things that are said about our DeLoreans
but maybe it's time to introduce a thread about the things we say about our car that others may find
amusing. I've been keeping my 40 year old twin daughters up to speed concerning 4915's status and
they got a laugh out of me referring to 4915 as 'she' and 'her'. I'm not married and they thought their
daddy had a girlfriend ... I explained that it just doesn't sound right to call her an 'it'. I think I made
them understand.

So I eagerly await 'her' return ... 'she' has been gone a long time.:lockdance:

I'm not sure what DPI's typical restoration turnaround is, but I've known people who have sent their cars to both PJ Grady & DMC Texas, and their cars were gone between 8 & 12 months.

Correct. Usually longer with a lot less work. At the 10 month mark which I do not like though. All depends on what is being done and issues along the way. This was a massive over haul to say the least with a good number of unforeseen issues along the way.

Just to follow up on this, my brother and I purchased this vehicle from Jack about the same time he sent his other one off to Josh. It's currently being restored to driving condition in our garage, as it had not been driven since the late 1980's. We should have it running and driving in good condition by the end of the summer. It would have been sooner, but I ended up purchasing that parts car a few months back and we spent a good amount of time with that and the repairs to 16647 had to wait.

Well, here I am reporting in on the restoration of 4915. There isn't much to report except
she is still at DPI (it'll be 14 months in a couple of weeks) and Josh tells me it will be pretty soon.
I bought the Porsche 997 exhaust tips and had them shipped directly to DPI for installation.
The stock tips are round and the 997 tips are oval and the fascia has round 'cutouts' which
would look unfinished if not modified. So Josh sent the rear fascia to the body shop to have that done.
Also he had to replace the AC evaporator which was the last AC part that wasn't new which pushes the
completion date back.

I'm keeping the faith that she'll be ready soon. I have never been separated from my D this
long in 32 years of ownership ... and it's tough. I will have plenty of pictures to post when done. :smoke1:

Ok guys, D Day is getting closer and closer. Josh tells me she will be ready to come home November 1. That's a Friday
and she should be here the following Sunday ... Monday for sure. It will be a big event since she has been gone 16 months.
If anyone had told me it would take this long I wouldn't have believed them. She needed more than I was aware of and
I kept adding things I wanted done and here we are. I have spent an obscene amount of money but I didn't want a 2014
Corvette ... I wanted a 2014 DeLorean and sending her to Josh at DPI is the best way to do that. Don't get me wrong, I
am a great admirer of the new Vettes but when these DeLoreans get in your blood there is no escape.

Hi, I have just read with great interest all the posts on this thread. I am 71 years old and have owned my Delorean since Feb of 82. I am very proud to be one of several Delorean owners over the age of 70 and also one of the guys who has owned his car over 30 years. We not so young men seem to love our lives and our Deloreans , it is nice to belong to a club of owners who just keep going.

Yes, it is certainly satisfying to belong to a club of 'seasoned' DeLorean owners who are still enjoying
their D's over three decades later. It's funny how owning a DeLorean can become an extension of ourselves that helps define
who we are. I know that in my circle of friends I am identified firstly as a DeLorean owner and other traits I
may have follows.

Owning a DeLorean doesn't keep us young but it helps us 'think young'. Ageing is :wave2:
inevitable but to quote that great American, Doc Brown ... "do it with some style"!!

Yea, don't forget me....... Like Andy I'm 71 and owned my car since June of '82. Some of us, Raddad, SS Spoiler and others have driven these cars all over the United States and half of Canada. I attempted to sell my car last spring but after attending the DMCMW open house and renewing some old friendships I changed my mind and am now looking forward to travelling in the car again next summer. Winter comes early in Minnesota so it's already in hibernation.

Rest assured guys, you will be among the first to know when my baby comes home. At almost the last minute I asked Josh to
install Wings-A-Loft and adjusting the doors so they open and close smoothly can be a gigantic chore. They had to remove most
of the stainless to access the latches. I'm trying to get everything taken care of while the car is up there. The one thing I
want to avoid is shipping her back up there for something I should have thought of.

All I can do is hurry up and wait. :hippo:

After a couple of false starts I believe the final finish date is near. Despite a lengthy battle
with pneumonia Josh has told me 4915 will be finished and ready to ship February 4th. I have
advised the trucking company to be there on that date. People outside this community won't
understand but I'll immediately go to work on her ... install a third brake light, install the
Flux Capacitor and install the set of stainless steel labels. Working on my D is part of the the joy
of ownership!
So ... with a lump in my throat I say ... Bring her on! :lockdance:

Jack wanted a few custom features on the car including LED lighting in the engine compartment. Originally when we assembled it clear stainless lines were installed. We had a little down time working out a few door kinks and I swapped the lines for the blue. It is a nice touch without overdoing it.

reminds me of the inner workings of a fine Swiss watch and yes, Domi the blue fuel lines
are truly killer. Is that AC compressor chromed?
Josh, I stand in awe of your work! I can't wait to see the completed package! There is going
to be a big celebration when the truck hauling 4915 arrives. She ships February 4th and when
we learn exactly when she will arrive I'm shutting my business down because all my employees are going
to be there come hell or high water. My sister and two ex-wives will be there, A reporter for the
local newspaper will be there ... hell, everyone
I know will be there for the unloading. Think of when Doc Brown unloaded the Time Machine ...

I am curious about your policy on returning leftover parts after a restoration.
I noticed that Shep had a lot of parts left over that I thought he took with him.
I just want to say that I don't want any of that stuff except I do want the
Bra. I assume you left it off and you can just put it in the trunk.

I didn't want to scratch the new paint on the fascia. I boxed it up with a few other misc items in the car. Depending on the shipping companies policy we will either put it in the vehicle or ship it to you. Many shipping companies have policies against any loose items.

we learn exactly when she will arrive I'm shutting my business down because all my employees are going
to be there come hell or high water. My sister and two ex-wives will be there, A reporter for the

Mostly wear and tear issues. The frame saw somewhere between 400-500 thousand miles before tearing it down. Major concerns in the lower cradle were corrected along with a massive reconstruction of the crumple zone. Shock towers were five times the normal dimension at the shock points. Typical rust issues down the folded section along the fuel tank and trans. No one thought to think of drainage on these things.... lots of room for water to sit.

The process of restoring the stock components especially the frame is extremely time consuming when done correctly. Just as an FYI once the next three frame offs are completed in the next months we are switching to new frames. Restorations will be priced close to the same but include a full stainless chassis, control arms, radius arms, brackets etc. If my math is right and it always is we will increase production by almost double thanks to SW dropping rolling chassis at our door. This will greatly reduce our turn around time which will make everyone happy. The only parts that we plan to harvest from the stock frame at this time will be the front rear hubs and fuel cells. The number of NOS sourced junk components used in our frame builds is 0. Everything is manufactured by our trusted sources or a reputable high end source.

The best laid plans ... Irony to the max ... Exactly 18 months, a year and a half, after I shipped her to DPI for
the mother of all refurbishments, after spending an obscene amount of money ($50K plus) I found myself in the
hospital emergency room with High Blood Sugar. I've lost almost all my muscle strength. Now I'm sitting in my chair in front
of the fireplace watching it snow. 4915 is in her place in the shop. I'll visit her when I can.

This DeLorean looks better than she did 33 years ago when I picked her up. The stainless is perfect. Josh spent the
necessary time to make the gaps lined up and regrained to perfection ... JZD himself would be proud. The pictures Josh
posted above tell the story and I'll post pictures of the interior when I can. It's pretty much perfect too. I've removed
the bra (which nobody liked any way) revealing the new fascia. There was an issue with Hervey's SS air cleaner
not fitting and I'll get into that when I can. One thing that made me break out with a big grin was listening
to the spec 1 exhaust as my friend parked her. One would swear there is 300 plus hp under there.

Sorry for posting such a sad story. I promise I'll do better next time.

I changed the oil about every 8K miles. All the carpet and interior components are original except
for the seats and the driver's side carpet which could stand replacing again. I swapped the seats about every 40K
to make them wear evenly. I use ArmorAll about every 6 months.

I know! I am shocked the entire interior has zero cracks, browning, or sun deformation. That's pretty impressive for a car that's been driven 370,000 miles. There are DeLoreans with 3,700 miles that don't look this nice inside.

The interesting thing here is I never used a dashmat. The car is always garaged and is covered on the rare nights left outside.

I swap the whole seat. You can do it with no modifications. Of course making any adjustments is tough
with the wheel jammed against the console. I make a one time setting on the driver's seat since
no one else drives my car. I also make a one time setting on the passenger seat and leave it there.

Yeah I've got to check that out. I don't want to miss that. Since I got 4915 back from DPI I
have installed a third brake light, SS letters on the rear fascia, the SS air filter, installed the
the smoked headlight covers I made myself and the Flux Capacitor but now I can't get the
Driver's door open. I tell you when I write my book a whole chapter will be devoted to me
and my DeLorean.

Yep, these little cars will make you pull your hair out ... well, not you Alex. A few days ago after a
short drive, I pulled in the shop, turned the engine off and pulled the handle to get out ... nothing.
No matter what I tried, including sticking my arm out and trying the outside handle, I was stuck!
I tugged and pulled for probably 30 minutes. I had my phone with me but I didn't want anyone,
that would be giving up. So then I decided to do the unthinkable ... crawl to the other seat and
exit through the passenger door. With moves that would put Harry Houdini to shame and a lot of
cussing I made it out.
Then the fun began ... trying to open the door from the outside. I removed the upper panel,
revealing a lot of the rods that open and lock the doors ... it was all Greek to me. Where were you
Alex when I needed you? Josh, bless his heart, tried his best to guide me as I tried to open the door
until we finally gave up. Even if we did open the door there was no way I could put it back together
with all those little clips and things.
So, I'm waiting for the truck to haul 4915 back to GPI. I didn't know what else to do. Ever since
I've had a DeLorean I've heard those stories of people getting locked in their cars. I don't
recommend it.:bootyshake:

Did you try putting the key in the lock and cycling it manually.

This happened to me when the first time I got in my car after I bought it 20 yrs ago. I was in the car. I ended up reaching through the window and putting the key in the lock cylinder and manually unlocked the door.

In my case it was a weak lock solenoid that prevented it from unlocking, and a Bad DLM.

That's sure happened to me. If I lock the passenger door then unlock it, it's stuck and requires removal of the upper door panel and a lot of fidgeting with all the rods to get it to open again. One of these days I'm going to get the doors fixed for good (if that's even possible).

I'm back to report on the continuing saga that is me and my DeLorean.
I got the car back after DPI opened the doors which were stuck. Now, I've
driven my favorite 30 mile loop twice with no surprises ... no, the surprise
waited until the third loop. There I was, grinning as she took the curves in
stride. I love the sound of the SS headers and enjoy the extra power of the
spec II engine. Then in an instant she started coughing and spitting. It acted
like she was running out of gas. I knew it couldn't be since I had driven less
than a hundred miles since I filled it up. So, there I was. A couple of folks
stopped to help but I had already called my brother-in-law to bring his trailer.
We got her back in the shop where I immediately began looking for the culprit.
I checked the fuel pump and it was running but no fuel pressure ... Dammit!!

I hate to admit it but I'd had enough. I closed her up, turned the lights off and
walked up to the house. I made me a glass of lemonade and settled in my
chair. I turned the TV on the channel with old westerns non-stop. Been there
ever since.

Hello, my name is Jenny, I'm Jack's daughter. Some of you may already know this but my Dad passed away on August 25th. His health declined throughout the summer. He was hospitalized for pneumonia and was not able to regain his health following that illness. As you know, my Dad LOVED his Delorean. I remember as a teenager, Daddy picking me up from seeing the movie Back to the Future...he was in his Delorean and it couldn't have been any cooler! It was a mad frenzy up there! That car brought my Dad so many years of enjoyment. I've read his posts on this Forum which has been difficult but was also meaningful to get to read new thoughts from my Dad. I want to thank you for providing a sense of community for him. The past couple of years, he spent a lot of his time in his chair on his laptop and he would mention this forum. It added to his quality of life for sure and it was a way for him to still enjoy his car even though he wasn't able to drive it.

We are in the process of selling his car which is very difficult. But I wanted to let you all know about my Dad's passing and how much you meant to him. I wish you all the best.

your father was a shining example of what it means to be a DeLorean owner. He loved his car and loved to drive it. I am fairly certain that between his two cars, no one has driven a DeLorean further.

His posts here were always positive, extolling the virtues of owning the car, and above all, driving it. My only regret is not hearing more of his stories as I am sure he had many.

Thanks for letting us know the sad news and into your family a little. Jack was certainly a legend within dmctalk and the DeLorean community as a whole.

Not gonna lie. I didn't know him, nor did I really get a chance to follow most of his threads. But he does seem like a really nice guy who will be missed. So I am sorry to hear that he's gone.

But just wondering here, after that last time he had problems with the car, did he ever get it running again? Odd question, I know. But I just hope there was a happy ending.

Hello, my name is Jenny, I'm Jack's daughter. Some of you may already know this but my Dad passed away on August 25th. His health declined throughout the summer. He was hospitalized for pneumonia and was not able to regain his health following that illness. As you know, my Dad LOVED his Delorean. I remember as a teenager, Daddy picking me up from seeing the movie Back to the Future...he was in his Delorean and it couldn't have been any cooler! It was a mad frenzy up there! That car brought my Dad so many years of enjoyment. I've read his posts on this Forum which has been difficult but was also meaningful to get to read new thoughts from my Dad. I want to thank you for providing a sense of community for him. The past couple of years, he spent a lot of his time in his chair on his laptop and he would mention this forum. It added to his quality of life for sure and it was a way for him to still enjoy his car even though he wasn't able to drive it.

We are in the process of selling his car which is very difficult. But I wanted to let you all know about my Dad's passing and how much you meant to him. I wish you all the best.

The news of your dad's passing is weighing heavy on some of us. I never got the chance to meet Jack in person, even though we had arranged too at the hot air balloon show at the airport in Hot Springs but somehow we missed each other. Your dad was a gem. Deloreans tend to attract drama that becomes a headache for some (purists arguing with the BTTF and modified guys), your dad was just here to enjoy his love for his car. No drama, just love. He will be missed, he was one of my favorites in the DeLorean community. I will miss receiving emails from him talking about his car and DPI.

+1 ... didn't know him, but I had read a number of his posts (I rarely comment).

Anytime someone experiences the loss of a loved one, it's a sad day. By the responses here, he was a well liked and respected member of the DeLorean community. I offer my condolences.

I live the other side of the pond & haven't had a Delorean long. So my knowledge of the community is limited.
I read this thread from the beginning, a rare thing for me, because I was attracted to his wonderful story and character.
Buying it new and driving over 360,000 miles, with his enthusiasm for the marque.
His family, his business, his cars and his attitude. To me it sounds like a life well lived, and which of us can ask for more!

Wish I had the honor of knowing you. So long my DeLorean brother. My prayers will include you Jenny and your family. I read this thread again last night, went into my garage, sat in my DeLorean, turned on my stereo and listen to Bob Seger, "Turn the Page", twice. It seems to me, you put your soul into your DeLorean and she is know ready for another 360,000 miles/smiles.
