Does anyone know of a good loud horn upgrade?
Tired of the wimpy sounding one, actually both!:screwy:

A little search of this forum can do wonders...

Here's just one example and I know theres more out there...

Personllay I have a love hat relationship with the horn. It's very dignified and polite like Brit horn should be. On the other hand it's embarassing and useles when you have to use it.

Cheers

What do yours sound like? Do they sound like this? (dying ostrich was a good description I got one day...)

When I replaced both of them with NOS ones from DMCH, they sounded a lot better and loud enough (to me) to let people know you're there. Part 2 horn test is there if you look for it...

Any generic auto parts store horn sounds better than stock. I got these back in 2001 at the old Big Wheel Rossi aka Checkers aka O'Reilly's.

Taken with a 3rd party vido app from my old iPhone 3g (no native movie functionality)...

I have a set of Stebel Horns on my DeLorean. When I got the car, it had an older set of Stebel Horns that eveuntually died. Since I liked their sound, I picked up a new set on eBay. Here's the website:

They are made in Italy.

I personally like the stock horns but the horns on the 2002+ MINIs are quite loud. They're basically as loud as the stock ones in my Impala SS...before I added the Fleetwood horns.

Also, what size (Amps?) can the standard wiring handle?
Reason I ask, I once put louder horns on an old VW (1980's) but there wasn't enough Ommph (Amps) to get them working. Had to run a separate relay.

It may sound crazy, but I'm happy with 2 new original Mixo horns. I had the same problem before. Wimpy sound. That's because the insides get rusty, but you can't tell until you take them apart.

With 2 new well connected horns, my D's horns are the loudest of my cars. Plus they are reasonably priced.

I just bought a Hella dual tone air horn and an wireless relay set. Plan is to attach a wireless remote to MOMO steering wheel button. If it works, I will post how to.

Thats cool. I saw that when i was looking around for horn options. I just want something as loud as a modern car horn. I can fart louder than the DeLorean horn. It's so quiet it's dangerous. There have been so many times someone has drifted into my lane or failed to see me and there was nothing I could do but hit the brakes.

Years ago I installed upgraded horns and wired them up via a relay so as not to melt the original horn switch. Pretty easy to do. Now the horn switch only triggers the relay, which draws directly from the battery.

Do u have a how to on that, Patrick?

I did the same thing; it's pretty easy. Under the dash, I located the wire that goes from the horn switch to the horns. There is a connector for the column wiring harness above the column, so that was where I tapped in. I pulled the pin out of the connector (in a non damaging way), and rerouted the wire from the horn switch to the trigger side of a relay that I also mounted under the dash. The output side of the relay then goes to the other side of the connector, leading to the horns themselves. Then you just need to get 12v battery power to the relay, as well as a ground, to the appropriate terminals (which are the same for pretty much all relays).

This way, the higher current draw of the larger horns doesn't flow through the stalk and potentially damage the switch.

EDIT: here is a good relay diagram:
39146
Stalk switch wire - Terminal 86
Horns - Terminal 87
12v battery power - Terminal 30/51
Ground - Terminal 85

Do not use Terminal 87a (unless your want your horns to always be on, except when you press the horn switch )

Love to see some pics of this, also does the Delorean have any Earthing trees that you can just add onto, where?

Nice! I had a version of those on one previous car. It was definitely loud!

No. I added one of those for 12V as well as one for ground. This is what I am using:

whenever possible, wire a new ground. Deloreans are not known for their good grounding. Whenever I make a new circuit I string out a new ground.

Patrick, That looks nice. I just ordered two for my car.
By the way, I was able to install wireless remote button to my steering wheel successfully. I just need to figure out where to attach two horns and a compressor.

Great! I ran a new dedicated ground to the Ground buss, as well as a 12V connection (fused) directly from the battery to that buss. You'll love having these busses there when there is a need to add future electronics.

I'd love to see that... I was thinking of doing it too - keeping stock on the stick and a fun horn on the wheel but couldn't figure out how to get a wire to the horn switch in the momo.

EDIT: Ooops... should have kept reading before responding.

Has anyone more recently come across some good, loud horns?

I installed a Wolo "260-2T Mini But Loud" horn. $15 from Amazon. It's loud, small, cheap, easy to mount. I mounted one in the stock location on the driver's side, and taped off the wiring on the other side.

Here's another dumb Question from me,
I am hooking up an older horn but it has two wires. I guess one is positive which Hooks up to the Delorean plug and I would guess the other gets grounded to the frame or something right?

Yes. The purple horn wire is +12v when the horn button is pressed. Ground the other side to the frame and you should be good.

The movie "Big Fat Liar" does it well with excellent comedic effect on Paul Giamatti's face over time he hits the brakes on his Jaguar..

why not 2?

I wanted to reduce the current draw on the circuit. One is plenty loud considering I almost never blow the horn.

I use these, they are loud and install in the stock location. Been running them 5+ years and still look new.
