Does anyone know if the replacement accumulator from DMCH is the exact same size as the original one?
I have a new one from Hervey and it is quite a bit shorter....I am having difficulty mounting it in the bracket

thanks
John

Probably similar to the one we are now using, but we provide an adapter.

Pretty sure Dmc just supplies you with a piece of silicone hose cut to size. Want to say it is 1 3/4

I replaced mine earlier this year w/ the DMCH kit. The new accumulator was significantly smaller than the one I replaced. They include a shim in the kit that looks like a coolant hose. It fits over one end of the new accumulator and allows you to use the original bracket. Here's a pic I took when I did mine:

Thanks,
that's the same as the one from Hervey....still having a hard time getting it in there...guess I just need some patience :rolleyes1:

Wasn't too hard of a job for me. It all fit together relatively easily. Getting to it w/o a lift and the car on jackstands laying on my back was the PIA part.

I also installed it a year ago, PIA!! Rear on ramps, no space for anything. I bought Hervey's and yes it seems as if it is not held on good

I received mine today from John, and I though too it was a little bit shorter than the original.
Now, you confirm I wasn't dreamed
Let's hope I'll be more lucky to mount it!

Anyone know if there is an appreciable difference in reservoir volume in the smaller sized accumulator? I was under the impression the function of the accumulator was (at least partly) to give a little extra gas when needed if you stomp on the accelerator and outpace the fuel pump. If there were some percentage less fuel volume in the accumulator now, would you see a decrease in available temporary 'extra' gas until you let off the pedal and let the fuel pump catch up again?

I emailed James Espey about this a few months back. He said the larger one is the older now discontinued Bosch size/style.

Not sure about the volume differences affecting performance and such. I thought this had more to do with rest pressure and vapor lock.

Just so that everyone is clear on this:

The original style is still readily available and the switch was only made due to pricing. The OEM style whole sale price jumped up considerably killing the profit margin on the part. I have even recently checked the available stock on these directly and it is still in the 100's. The move was only made from a profit standpoint as the smaller unit is much cheaper to purchase and resell with a higher margin.

The purchasing price was below $100.00 whole sale but is not over this threshold. We are still using the OEM style until the well runs dry. The use of the smaller one while it works just fine doesn't fit right. When it is time to officially make the switch we plan to produce a replacement bracket that bolts to the stock location utilizing the four holes on the frame.

On a side note I think it is funny that Hervey epoxies over the Bosch part number on the smaller ones. We had an owner in here recently with one he wanted installed and I had to laugh.

Very interesting Josh. Thanks for filling us in and this makes sense. Any input on Jonathan's comment re the performance aspects; in other words, other than the size being different, are there any other differences?

The only difference that could be contributed to this is volume bleed off. With a smaller unit the bleed down would/should technically be different. The only way to test is with a CIS gauge installed and by watching the rest pressure bleed off.

Finally have it installed (havent secured the fuel lines yet)
The best way I found to secure the accumulator is slide the rubber sleeve back a little and be sure to use foam padding between the bracket and the accumulator.
And yes, it is a huge pain doing this lying on your back.

I may be wrong about this but doesn't the fuel accumulator come into play only when starting the engine and serves no purpose after the engine is running?

Accumulator does two things. It keeps pressure in the fuel system after the engine is turned off. It also smoothes out the fuel pressure spikes caused by the fuel pump.

Both very important. This would be a hard part to replace in the system short of a regulator system and then you are still faced with holding line pressure to prevent vapor lock and quick starts.

By using the smaller unit you would lose Rest Pressure sooner. Under some conditions that may cause a hard hot restart problem. There is a relationship between the Thermo-Time switch, the Rest Pressure leak-down rate, and the Control Pressure Regulator. Modifying any of these will affect how the motor starts and runs during the warm-up cycle. These parts (and others) were calibrated to work together.

RockAuto has the Bosch #0438170029 for sale. I've noticed that it seems to go into and out of stock frequently. Not sure why, but I was able to pick one up.
