Turns out its not a 500 series, but VIN 1014. Really sad shape of a DMC. Sorry to get everone worked up about seeing a 500 series DMC.

Doesn't look too bad, all the stainless seems to be in good shape and everything is there. This is the second time recently that I've seen the cloth seats.

The frame is going to be the main factor in determining price.

What's with all these cloth-covered seat cars?

I laugh every time I see those.

Back in 2000 I was at DMC-GG and wanted my seats reupholstered in cloth. I can live with the PRV, but I hate leather. It's sticky as hell in the summer and makes you slide around while you drive. Cloth keeps you cool and grips and holds you in place. Anyhow, Don had a couple of cars in the shop with custom seats. I found this material and wanted it when I saw it in a car with a diamond pattern. We had a phone conversation later on when I gave the go ahead to upholster the seats in that material with factory stitching. He kept asking me to reconsider stating that it wasn't going to be a good combination.

When I came to pick my car up I found out that other owners had seen my car and took turns sitting in it. Many liked it and started requesting it. That and my kick panel speakers and dashboard tweeters.

That cloth will make any DeLorean seat plush. I just sink right into mine, and have had some road trips where I've just kicked back and slept like the dead.

That fine if you dont like leather. But just for the record... A properly plush leather DeLorean seat will hold you in place just fine. Dried out leather seats will not. Other options to reduce the sweaty-stick in summer is getting the perforated seat covers DMC sells, or adding active cooling (http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?3473) to them. Window tint does wonders as well.

You also weren't the first to have cloth seats. Marty Maier did his sometime before 2000, and I think I've seen cars sitting since the 80's or early 90's with them as well.

This particular car does doesn't *look* as bad to me as Chris made it seem. From the photos, its missing an engine cover screen and a shift boot. Electrical compartment is opened up but doesn't mean its in bad shape. Everything else appears fully intact at least as dreaded-previous-owner modifications**/neglect goes. Oh, and those cloth seat covers can be replaced easily enough as well...8)

**Edit: Except that big red wire in the interior.

There are all sorts of weird things going on in that engine compartment: the original coolant bottle painted black, no idle microswitch, the vacuum line connecting the valve cover & the intake airbox is capped off, the wiring harness looks like it's routed over the top of the intake manifold, etc. The electrical compartment being opened with a tumble of spliced wires coming out is further proof of electrical gremlins. Trying to restore a car like this one would take years off my life! :dead:

Not the way I drive they don't. And it's also the same reasoning that Mazda had with the 3rd Gen RX-7. Besides, even with constant cleaning and moisturizing of seats like many DeLoreans and other cars I've been in, I always feel like I'm swimming in the seats because they're so slick. I also hate it when I wear shorts or a wifebeater and my legs and shoulders stick to the seats.

Marty may very well have used the same material. It's not like it was never available previously. But everyone told me they'd never seen that cloth used before, and again, advised me against it on aesthetics. The other big difference of course is that my seats are 100% cloth. Again, I only want cloth seats.

They're darker in person, but the flash just makes them look lighter.

I'll chime in here. I'm the "inside guy" The car has been sitting in a barn for 10+ years. Right now its at a repair shop awaiting repairs. However since the owner has not paid any money, the car sits outside. The owner is interested in selling but is asking WAY too much. She wants $25k. The owner of the shop will be giving me the owners contact info if anyone is interested in talking her back down to reality

http://dmctalk.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=19178&d=1369157615

It even has the same tilting at the base! I always thought it was a cheap chinese generic, but maybe not :confused2: What's the history behind 1014's antenna? Is it known when and where it was added, or where it was sourced from?

Mine is the same as that, if it screws off.

Mechanic's lien + sale to recuperate losses = you getting a DeLorean.

It will deteriorate much faster outdoors than in a barn.

Mine is the same as that, if it screws off.The only screwing off mine can do is completely removing the entire assembly. The way mine works, the antenna itself has two hooks that grip the underside of the fender. The black half-sphere base and chrome cover for said base rest against the top of the fender, and a chrome nut goes on top of that, tightening the hooks against the bottom of the fender. The diagram of this is in service bulletin ST-12-9/81. I always thought the masts DMC provided were flexible, but the mast in that picture clearly is not, and neither is mine. It's not a "removable" antenna in the sense that you can remove just the mast and leave the base in there for car washes and such, if that's what you meant. You'd have to completely remove the entire assembly, disconnect it from the radio, and plug up the hole to go to a car wash.

I wonder if a QAC was responsible for those antennas, as they seem geographically too wide spread to have come from any particular dealership, but too common to be individual original owner modifications.

The fixed mast fender mounted antenna from the factory is indeed flexible/whip and the entire assembly, base and shaft, are black in color. The shaft is also separately removable from the base by simply unscrewing it with a pair of adjustable pliers.

Another antenna question regarding this car is whether or not it also has a windshield embedded antenna as it should.

If it's a generic as I've been thinking, the QAC center could have purchased a batch of them and installed them on various VIN's as needed.

VIN 1014 was built 5 cars ahead of mine. My car still has the windshield antenna not the fender one. I'm still trying to figure out if my car was part of the first shipment.

I spent some quality time with 1014 this morning. It's still just sitting there -- 10 years outside now with no cover, 18 years since it was last on the road. Stainless and frame actually still look ok. Everything else is rough. Water is leaking and pooling inside (there's a pond where your feet sit), fuse/electrical modifications galore, cracked everything, moisture/mold setting in, roof box issues, etc. The good news is that the price has come down from 5 years ago. Instead of $25k, it's now $15k. I'm crunching some numbers. Would love to get this back on NH roads :)

10 years ago it probably didn't have a lake inside it. 15k now? Does that include the eco system in the floor? Honestly I just don't understand how some people go apeshit over a car let alone based on it's vin number.

You are honestly going to to see if you can scrape up the money and give him his number and reward this guy for what he has done(or in this case didn't do)? Tell him to sit back and spend another decade watching it deteriorate even further. He doesn't deserve yours or anyone else's money.

Let it go.

Haha. You actually read my mind when I spoke with him. My offer, if any, will be SIGNIFICANTLY below asking. He received an offer yesterday that he rejected. I didn't pry nor care to find out what the offer was exactly...

It's what you don't see that is even more scary. Does the motor even turn over or is it seized? Can you really examine the frame well enough to assess it's condition? Even though the price may have come down the price of the parts the car will require has gone up making it even more expensive to rebuild the car. Figure $20K worth of just parts PLUS your labor.

To whoever winds up buying this car, since I see the same antenna that I'm running and came with my car, if you want to know where I sourced a brand new one, you'll need the base of a Ford antenna (http://www.metraonline.com/part/Ford_Antenna_44-FD810) and the top of a universal antenna (http://www.metraonline.com/part/Aftermarket_Antenna_44-UT30), both made by Metra. Removable masts are nice, buying both means you have an immediate replacement handy if it decides to go sideways like it's sitting in yesterday's shot. (I know, I'm probably the only guy that likes fender antennas, but at least I keep mine looking nice :) ). This exactly matches the TSB entry on installing a fender antenna.

I tried making an offer as well, but my intention was to part it out. But as I predicted, my offer was rejected. Probably best to let this one go. There are plenty of others out there

Thanks for sharing the pics. That car is definitely a basket case. Too many issues to list! From a restoration perspective, it's not worth the asking price. From a parting-out perspective, it's really hard to say... but still seems like a steep asking price.

I bought the car (I feel for a good price). I’m going to try to bring it back to life. If anyone has any inside information about the car or any suggestions on what it needs or where to get parts, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Mark,

I live in northern NY, ~2 hours from Springfield (I'm actually going to Forest Park tomorrow.) I'd be interested in making the drive with my car for a meet sometime.

I'm on my 2nd DeLoean as well. 4728 was a running resto, I'd be glad to share anything I've experienced.
