View Full Version : blinking 3 times

Modern cars now blink 3 times when you push the blinker arm down just once.
I'm so used to it I forget to hold it longer while driving the Delorean.
This would be a great update, but I have no idea if this would be difficult to fabricate or not.
I certainly cannot, so I am just launching the idea.

My SuperBright relay module does a minimum of two blinks, three would be nice

I've never noticed this feature (my Daily is a 2006 Chrysler), but it explains a lot of drivers I've seen on the road who blink their signal once before changing lanes. I thought they were just lazy, but yours is a better explanation. :)
I imagine it would be tricky to accomplish this without the aid of some modern electronics. At first I thought "you could add a time-delay relay," but the relay would make no distinction between instances of having the switch engaged, so you would also have it blinking for a second or two after you've finished turning, which would be weird!
I bet Dave M. could come up with a solution to this in his sleep. :)

You would just need a switched timer to hold power on the flasher for 3 blinks instead of the momentary action only. The hard part would be making the existing stalk a 3 way switch (off, momentary, on --> clicked). I assume by original spec there is no difference between the momentary and clicked positions, other than the locking feature.
Speaking of the click/locking part, do y'all have issues with the turn signal not disengaging after turning the wheel?

You could use this:
http://www.altronix.com/products/product.php?name=6062
You would need two, one for the left signal, one for the right. Wire up this relay in parallel with the signal switch and TRG to the same. Did a little testing with one hooked up to a battery and it gives you that momentary activation. Keep in mind this does not replace the flasher relay, simply mimics the turn signal lever for how ever many seconds you need to blink the lights three times. Dip switch settings are 1=OFF, 2=ON, 3=ON, 4=OFF & cut jumper J-3. I would also wire up the +12V to a switch iginition source to prevent current draw on the batter when parked. If you don't cut the jumper the timer will activate upon initial power up which will blink all your flashers when you start the car. Sounds interesting, but don't know if you will blow out the flasher unit or fuse by doing this!

I was kinda hoping he would kick in.
My arm needs help too to turn of the blinkers. You can either try to repait that or you can buy a new blinker arm unit. They cost some 100 or 150€/piece.
In both cases I think you need to remove the steering wheel.
Keep the suggestions comming.....

You could do this designing a new blinker. It would be very easy using a micro but don't think you could sell enough to recop your R&D charges.

It's all out there, just google it. here examples in german:
http://www.pekatronic.de/index.php?cat=c17_Komfortblinkmodule-Komfortblinkmodule.html
looks strange, why 4 relays ?
do it yourself circuits:
http://www.jalt.de/?q=node/18
A friend installed a similar circuit in his car - he is far away from being an EE and managed it.
super cheap:

That last one seems pretty good.
need to connect red and black and then connect the other wires.
Anyone ever tried this?
I think I'll give this a go.
Thanks for the tip Elvis!!

I bought the other one from Elvis' list. I called them and they say it work son every car that has a blinker box. They send to Belgium, no problem.
Should be here in a few days, I'm curious it it works, I'll post the results here.

Hi,
I would even go a step further and recommend to forbid those "blink 3 times devices". A lot of people get used to that feature. But I believe using it expresses the attitude, "I am changing lane or direction right now. I don't care that someone else has to know it before to be prepared for it.". If you would show other road users that you are going to change lane, blinking three times isn't enough until you have finished the manouver.

I quite agree. My driving instructor advised me to change lanes in the following manner:
1. Engage signal light.
2. Check mirror and blind spot.
3. Change lanes.
4. Disengage signal light.
By that time I have done all of that, my signal has flashed between seven and ten times.

Funny, I was taught Mirror, Signal, Maneuver and it had stuck with me all these years.
I think the idea is not to scare someone in your blind spot by signaling before even looking to see if there is anyone there.

+1!
When I took my CDL driving test in 1990. If you didn't do Exactly these steps, you got points off, (Or Failed the test if the grader had had a Bad day).
During the test I forgot to Double clutch one time in a turn, (I did the standard thing I was used too and shifted without the clutch), realized my error and looked over at the guy. He was staring at me.
He said "If I had heard 1 gear hit another, I'd be driving this truck back and you would've have Flunked this test."
While my minivan has the 3 blinker thing, I don't use it. Farrars 4 rules above, are ingrained in me.

In all the states I've driven in, It seems like only in the South Eastern states people will signal for a turn, (When not in a specified turning lane), Left or Right, because the person in front of them does, and then NOT Turn?
It's Amazing how many times I might have hit these people, because they Didn't do what they signaled, and I'd planned ahead for passing them.!?
Off my soapbox...

I think the idea is to alert other motorists that you wish to change lanes.
<story time>
I invariably tell my fiancé when we're in traffic and she's frustrated that she can't change lanes, "No one knows you're trying to change lanes unless you put your signal on." Sure enough, when she puts her signal on, someone lets her over. No amount of looking over her shoulder and into her mirror can accomplish what "putting on the blinker" does.
</story time>
In my experience, other motorists aren't looking at the drivers of other vehicles so much as they are looking at the vehicles. Maybe it's an American thing. ::shrug::

What I was taught, (My truck driving teacher was Hell on safety items).
By engaging your blinker first, you're letting the person, (If one's in your blind spot), know that you're planning to change lanes and giving them a chance to see your intentions.
It astonishes me how many people Don't use blinkers At All...

I wasn't intimating that by signalling, one would immediately start the lane change. You would obviously only do so if it was safe to do so.
Mirror, Signal, Look, Maneuver may be more correct.
Although having said that, I think many people down here believe that by using the Signal, it means that you are.changing lanes irrespective of other drivers wishes or proximity.

Agreed with Dangermouse.
Some people driving very slow on the highway usually also change lanes way too early. When I come from behind way faster (but within (European) speed limits) I will seriously hit the brakes, blinker on means "I'm moving over right now" We're talking lane shifting on the highway.
But there is a difference, in Europe you're not allwed to pass on the right side and you're supposed to keep right all the time.
BTW the blinker module can be set at blinking 3 times or 5 times.
If it works fine, I will notify other Delorean drivers becasue I consider that a safety feature.
It is like the convex mirrors, I think you all should have this, it is a major safety improvement that costs a few $ only and takes 20 minutes to install.

I will certanly install one of these if it works out for you. As for the convex mirrors i could not agree with you more:smile:
