Gas cap cross reference

Hey guys,

I've got an earlier car (1561) with a locking gas cap. It's never sealed that well and the locking mechanism is completely seized up. I'd like to replace it and I'm not concerned about it locking, I rarely leave it parked outside the garage. Does anyone know of a cross-reference gas cap for our cars? I know I can just buy one from one of the vendors, but I'd rather just source it locally and get it replaced today if possible. I've read this cap has worked, but it's a vented style cap, which I don't think is what we're supposed to use.

If the key is still good (not worn) try and find a good (car) lock smith.
He probably is capable enough to repair the original cap.

Thanks but even if the key worked fine I'd still just rather not have to deal with it. I standard, non-locking cap is really what I'm after.

If there's an owner of a second model year (1982/1983) near you, try if that type of cap fits.
The newer cars have non-locking gas caps.
I'm not sure if the filler neck differs, but it's worth a try.
At least in that case you will have a properly fitting gas cap and know what to order.

When you replace yours, pop the Key and Cap in the mail and send it to me.
I bought my new cap from Toby at DMC-NW and it works great. I wouldn't bother with an aftermarket cap. Just get from the vendors, plus, it looks better then a shiny metal one.

I looked on his website and couldn't find anything, do you have a link for it? And sorry, but I'll probably hold onto the original cap for my car, I like to keep all the original components should the next owner want that stuff.

Its not actually Grey though. They come Black. Any DMC Vendor will have these.

Oh yeah I found that, thought you said Toby was selling them as well. Either way, I'd rather just source it locally as I'm sure it'll be much cheaper, no shipping, and I can get it fixed today.

*scratches head* Toby DOES have them.... And I tried sourcing locally as well when I needed one. The SMOG shops wouldnt pass me because my cap was old and they didn't have the right fitting to test the caps pressure. The size is very unusual. You shouldn't skimp on this and get a correct quality replacement. If the size/seal isn't right you will emit gas fumes and can risk getting bad stuff into your tank.

To be clear, Toby also still maintians his own parts supply seperate from the Houston lot. It's the source for mostly aftermarket and upgrade parts like the wings-a-loft, etc.

I had Autozone cap but it was so painful to open and close. Metal part really digs into your skin. I ended up ordering the DMC gray version. I had to do some shaving to make it fit. It works great now and painless. Plus looks much better. Save your money by ordering the right one.

Thanks guys, sounds like the vendor cap is the way to go, I'll put in an order. But as always I'll have to come up with some other stuff to buy to justify the shipping. So I'm sure this will spiral out of control! :)

Oh and Kenny, I think you have the closest VIN I've ever seen to mine, very cool!
