Waffles are great, but French toast is equally great!

I'm a huge breakfast fan. And love to cook ridiculously good breakfasts.

One simple tip I just realized is that in the past I would mix the cinnamon into the egg batter then dip. But now I sprinkle the cinnamon on the bread first and then dip it into the egg batter. This allows for more even cinnamon distribution.

As far as maple syrup, i just tap one of my trees in the backyard, hell I'm Canadian eh!

1 generous cup of melted vanilla ice cream.
3 eggs
1/2 cup orange juice
1 tsp vanilla extract
Cinnamon to taste
Makes approximately 1 loaf of bread.

I also lube the griddle by rubbing a stick of butter on it (no spray). Adds a great taste and color.

Make French toast with "Kings Hawaiian sweet roll bread". It's awesome.

Best national brand syrup IMHO is Log Cabin.

Just wanted to reply that we Belgians nerver eat waffles as breakfast.

Do do like your syrup a lot, I used to bring that home to Belgium.

That's my favorite syrup too...but I prefer sourwood honey on french toast.

I must amend my recipe here. It is actually 1/4 Cup of Orange Juice. Sorry for the mistake.

Nobody else has recipes? Only syrup comments? I dont care the brand but I do prefer 100% pure maple syrup instead of the typical maple-flavored corn-syrup ones.

This sounds great and I think my wife and I will try it... but I am looking for more recipes, too... like the amaretto one mentioned in the first post.

I'll accept that challenge.

Also, some of the best French Toast I ever made was with leftover French Bread that was just getting a bit stale. My fiancé insists that Halla (sp?) bread makes the best French Toast, though.

Eggs, cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla extract.

French Toast is the king of "bready" breakfasts. Hierarchy is as follows:

1. French Toast
2. Waffles
3. Pancakes

Syrup is not permitted, though I don't put syrup on pancakes or waffles either. Powdered sugar, like syrup, is for shitty-tasting French toast and is used to try and hide the fact that it sucks. Properly cooked French toast is delicious on its own.

Bill? Is that you? ;-)

Some friends of mine and I were having the "breakfast food topping" discussion the other day. One of us grew up with "syrup," another grew up with "maple syrup," and I grew up with honey. Turns out my mother didn't like the fake stuff that was in "syrup," but couldn't afford true "maple syrup" except on special occasions, so the Hudkins kids got honey on our waffles/pancakes/French toast. Ah, the things we learn about childhood when we're all grown up...

I didn't grow up well off at all (quite lower-middle class actually), and while my family did buy the "syrup" shit that you get at the store and both my parents and brother used it, I never liked it.

Similarly, I also refuse to put gravy on things. Mashed potatoes, turkey, stuffing, none of it gets soiled with anything other than a bit of salt.

Carburetors suck ass. That should about cover it. :)

I grew up on the Left Coast so, gravy wasn't the norm for a topping on Anything, (At least at my parents house).
Salt and Lots of Real Butter was our Gravy.

The only part of turkey I like is the skin. (When cooked properly)...

To stay on topic, My french toast recipe is,

To be added later...

One of the first times my (now ex) girlfriend cooked for me, she made French Toast. I'd stayed over at her place that night and the next morning she had to try and make do with the EXTREMELY limited cooking equipment she owned. No pans, no spatula, nothing resembling anything necessary to cook French Toast properly. She had to use a pot and flip them with a pair of forks. They came out completely mangled and didn't even resemble bread slices anymore.

They were STILL delicious.

Does anyone make their french toast without the crust on the bread? I often see people cut the crust off their PB&J and wondered if they do that with all bread....

I never understood it. I couldn't imagine not eating the crust. I don't understand not eating the crust on pizza also. Those are like breadsticks! Eat your carbs! -P

Being Bronx born and raised, I never understood this either. I mean shit, the entire bottom of the pizza slice you just ate IS CRUST.

all this talk about syrup makes me wonder... how do YOU pronounce the word, "syrup"? i pronounce it like "sear-up." i lived in numerous states during my childhood (including some in the deep south: GA, NC and TN), and pretty much every time i heard the word, it was "sir-up."

not sure where i got "sear-up," because ive never lived in New England:

I always pronounced it like "stirrup" without the T.

At work, I have access to the official NBC Handbook of Pronunciation. Now you have made me want to go and look up the official pronunciation of "syrup." But I can't, until Monday.

1. French Toast
2. Waffles
3. Pancakes

.

Clearly you are delusional after your night out on the town with those pretty girls

The hierarchy obviously is

1. Crepes
2. Pancakes - if they are good
3. French Toast
4. Waffles

Speaking of "if they are any good", are good "bready" products the exclusive preserve of mom 'n' pop breakfast places or can you get them in the chains?

My favorite breakfast place, with the best crepes, is Original Pancake House, but they are expensive.

I like Cracker Barrels pancakes, especially on a road trip.

We have just got an Egg Harbor Cafe here, (which seems to be big in IL) and their pancakes and French Toast are great. Crepes suck though.

Not too keen on IHOP, although ironically when I first moved here I thought it was the greatest restaurant on earth.

When I was a kid, my favorite "road food" was the pecan waffle from Waffle House. Now that I've moved out of North Carolina, I realize that not all Waffle Houses are as good as the ones between my folks' house and my great aunt's house back in the 1980s. :P Thanks to my fiancé, Cracker Barrel is now our "road food" of choice -- their quality is more consistent from location to location, and we can grab a bottle of Cheerwine for dessert on the way out. :)

<off topic nonsense>

For those of you who, like me, are cooks as well as DeLorean fanatics, here's my recipe for pancakes. It also works well as waffle batter.

Beat two eggs until they're fluffy (small bubbles). Stir in 1.5 cups of milk, 2 cups of flour, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of baking powder (not baking soda). Melt half a stick of butter and stir in. Set the mixture aside to let it rise while the skillet heats. By the time you're ready to spoon the batter out, it should be light and fluffy. Give it one more stir each time you take a spoonful to put in the skillet. Cook over med-lo heat (one tick under "med" on electric ranges) to desired brownness.

Enjoy!
