I just bought a Oct 1981 DeLorean from a friend.
I have noticed a few things that are issues and I'm looking for some direction.
1) AC blower turns on but no air though any of the vents (stuck in Defrost mode?) The compressor will be replaced on Friday but I'm pretty sure the fan should blow out the vents regardless.
2) Driver door light switches are not connected. Yes, I get the buzzer but I want the door lights to turn on. The issue is the blue/purple wire is not connected to anything. When I ground it to the switch, the lights turn on. However, where the heck is the wire supposed to connect to?
3) Metal plate under the dash dangles with wires and relays connected to it. Is this supposed to be like that or is that supposed to be mounted somewhere?
This is just the start. I am not a mechanic but am mechanically inclined and I like to do my own work when I can.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I've seen the metal plate zip tied up and out of the way. I found a bolt with a thread long enough that I bolted mine out of the way. I'm sure others with more experience will chime in on the other issues. Congratulations on the purchase of the car. Any pictures? I've got an October of 81 build as well, 4534. What's your vin?

1. Can you hear the blower turning? When you turn the mode switch to other positions do you hear a hissing sound.
2. Many former owners disconnected the door lights to stop draining the battery at shows etc. in the drivers side there are two switches btw.
BTW, general questions like this should go on the General Discussion area. This area is intended for completed "How To:" guides and instructions.

This might not be your problem, but there is a "replacement" blower motor out of some Corvette I believe, which is identical, except the motor spins the wrong way. You do get some airflow with it going to wrong way, but you get a lot more by reversing the connections to the motor. They're accessible if you cram yourself into the passenger foot area looking skyward. There are 3 grounds I believe, all in the same spot, and only 1 tab on the positive side, so you need splitter of sorts to plug all the wires in. But it makes a HUGE difference :D

I just fixed this exact same problem with mine. Mine actually blew air when I first got it, and then stopped a few days later. The problem was the mode switch. They don't sell new switches, but they do sell a rebuild kit for them. There is a rubber piece inside that controls the vacuum for opening the vents which controls where the air comes out. This rubber piece wears out and cracks, then you just get a big vacuum leak instead of air coming out of your vents. For me when this happened I got a pretty loud hissing sound coming from behind my dash.
Congrats on the new Delorean. I've only had mine for a few weeks and I love it. It's great to see the smiles it puts on poeple's faces wherever I go.

Thanks for the replies and instructions about the forum.
1) Yes, this what appears to be "the infamous" hissing sound is happening so a rebuild kit for the mode switch is in order.
2) I'll keep my future questions in the General Area from now on.
3) thanks for the congrats. I am very happy to finally own my dream car.
4) yes, I'm guessing one of the previous owners disconnected one of the two wires. My question is this- since there are two wires (blue/purple AND the black one), where does the second wire connect? The switch itself only has only a single wire connected and no other place for a second wire.
Many thanks for the help!

No problem dj
Look here for the various schematics of the car:
http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?40-All-Wiring-Schematics
amongst them you will find this one for the lighting:
http://dmctalk.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=17861&d=1364968206
and you can see that both the black and blue/purple should attach to that switch. Perhaps a tab has broken off. Look at the one for the passenger side and see if they are the same (sorry, I haven't actually worked at that particular switch my self yet.)

You all have been very helpful!
The relay "slab" I'll work on.
As for my Vin, my car is #5628. It was bought at auction from a dealer in late 2011 and private sale to me last week.
I'm a little concerned about the AC module. Where can I get it rebuilt if I remove it? It is my understanding that this part is no longer available and needs a kit installed to make it work again.
