View Full Version : Am I stuck in the 80s?

I need everyone's opinion - maybe I am crazy or I am just dating myself. Here is my story:

Last night me and my 18 year old son were watching the full episode of this Wheeler Dealers clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g77NYvqOvY
Of course, we laughed at the awkward Borat-like seller "Jurgen from Bergen" but that's not my point. Starting at about 0:30 you can see the nice red/chrome rims of that Merc 280. I told my son that "THOSE very rims really make the car". They just complete the look, the stance. Well, he just kinda said, "maybe so" but later in the episode they referred to the rims as "ugly" and "Miami Vice"-like and both Edd and Mike agreed that they gotta go. They just about gave them away and bought the stock, skinny ones instead. Obviously, my son couldn't stop laughing. So much for his dad thinking that he is the Authority on Everything Cars. I am now firmly placed in the category of Old School Car enthusiasts in his mind.

Guys - please validate: Are the rims that ugly? Or am I just stuck in the 80s? (If so, I guess that would explain my love for D's and Espirits)

Nothing wrong with them, BBS style rims with polished lips and coloured centres are where its at on the European modding scene at the minute!

I thought the car looked smart on those alloys!

That's right. Those were hot back in the day. Very Miami Vice, and I like that.

These kids that think they know what looks good, are these the same kids that bolt a 3' wing on the back of their Nissan Versa? Are these kids the same ones who will buy anything for their Civic as long as its anodized or wrapped in carbon fiber? ....most of their cars look like they drove through Advance auto parts with a magnet....yeah I'm listening to them for cosmetic car advice.

Not that bad, but there other wheels these days that would look better on that car!!!

And then there's just good old personal preference. I didn't particularly care for those "back in the day" either. Still don't. Not old school vs. new school, just not my thing.

So I say, "To each, their own." And, "Kids these days."

I think it's a good looking period-correct rim that works on 80's maaaybe some early 90's cars, but that's about it. There's nothing wrong with liking them, but I can't see them on anything later than that.

I'm neutral on the rims, I don't think they look bad at all, but they don't greatly appeal to me either.

Those are great rims/wheels!

Definitely didn't agree with Mike and Edd on their decision to swap them out. :bash:

 this is the first thing that came to mind... "with a roll of double-sided tape" is more like it.

Maybe it's just me, but it looks like a brown car with brown wheels.

I don't mind them, and think they suit this car, but I would prefer the silver ones on the gold car at the start of the clip.

Yeah. Isn't there a red DeLorean runnin' around that looks like that?

I think a set of "baby moons" would be the best.:elmo3:

Guess I'm showing my age. Baby moons were the thing in the 60s.

Really I like what was on the car as is.

Henrik - I'm with you. I like the rims that were on it before they changed them. And what's wrong with being stuck in the 80s? :headbang:

Tell your boy he wouldn't understand because he didn't get to experience that era.

Michael's engine compartment looks like something youd find behind an access panel in a Jefferies Tube. :headbang:

but Curtis' interior... meh.

Michael, Micheal...

So, I'm guessing that your favorite dish is rice :hihi2:

J/K - I love your engine bay!

Actually, Michael's engine bay reminds me of this scene from The Wraith (1986)
