Anyone in New Jersey/Philadelphia area?

Hey everyone, let me start out by saying the forums are excellent. I have been reading threads like a crazy person trying to educate myself, and I just ordered the James Espey buyers guide. I am very serious about buying a D and have the money ready. So I was just wondering if any of you fine people are located in the NJ/PA/DE area? I live in southern NJ and would love to talk with some local D owners about their cars, where they take them for service, meets, etc. and maybe even get some advice on the cars currently for sale in tri state area. I'm located in MD. I'm a member of the Delorean Mid-Atlantic club. We have many members in PA and NJ. If you contact us through our Facebook or our website (use Facebook or google) we can provide you with more information. We can also let you know about DeLoreans for sale in the area. There is also a Delorean Owners Facebook page that occasionally has postings of some for sale. There is also a DeLoreans For Sale Facebook page that has lots of listings.

For service, we have some very knowledgable active members in NJ that can do pretty much everything. They're finishing up a frame swap on my car. They've also worked with Delorean Performance Industries and DMCMW to get the parts we've needed during the swap. There are a few other members in PA that can help with issues (or call the NJ guys and have them walk us through fixing the problem). The Delorean community is very helpful and supportive. I knew people in the club before I bought mine, but I wish I had known about some of these resources before I bought a car with a rotted frame.

I'm in Northeast Philly. I've owned the car for about a yr now and have learned alot. After rebuilding the motor because of a oil leak and overheating issue, I am now in the middle of putting my interior back together. I do most if not all my work myself. I had never changed my own oil on my daily driver but tore the engine out of my D (with some help). They are really not that hard to work on you just need the passion to do it. To aid in finding you a car it would be helpful to know if you have any preferences for an '81. 82. or 83, the color of the interior, and an automatic or a 5-speed. What your budget is and expectations as to condition. As always, watch E-bay and Craig's List. One was just purchased off of Craig's List, an automatic 81. No matter what you have budgeted for purchase you must also plan and budget for work after you buy the car. Don't forget, sales tax, registration and Titling fees, insurance, and towing. If you are not handy, have some tools and a place to work you can figure it is probably going to wind up at PJ Grady's in Long Island for a while.

Thanks for the quick responses guys! I really don't have a preference between 81,82, or 83. But at the same time I am still learning the differences, I know the later models have the gas flap on the hood right? That looks like it would be nice to have, but at the same time if I found a car in great shape with good maintenance history, I wouldn't discriminate. As for manual vs auto, I have always had autos and have very little experience driving a stick, so I would lean towards auto, although I would assume it would limit my power potential for upgrades which is a drag, but one I am used to. In terms of price, I am expecting to spend between 20-25k, although my goal is to target one of the cars up for sale for 24-25 and try to get them down to 20. I would prefer black interior but again I'm ok with grey if the car is a good find. This car will be in my garage most of the time, I don't intend to daily drive it or anything, but ideally I want it to be decent driving condition, which based on the project car thread on these forums, is about what I should be able to get for my price range. Actually it was the earlier 81s that have the GF. Some are retrofitted on later cars because the owners like the look. Conversely some owners of early cars prefer the sleeker look of the later hoods.

FWIW, I would try and find out how many miles each has been driven in the last year or two.

Thanks I checked out the Mid Atlantic club website, I noticed there is an 83 auto for sale on the site, do you know if he is on the forums? It would be great to purchase a car from someone that everyone on here knows so I have a better idea of how they took care of the car.

Not sure about that car. However, there are a lot of local owners in NJ that really know their stuff about D's, and I HIGHLY advise you hit them up. You'll learn way more spending a couple of hours with a reputable Delorean owner who knows the cars then you will in weeks on this forum; there is just simply too much to type.

Send an e-mail to [email protected] asking for more information. They will be able to put you in contact with some of the owners I'm talking about, and you can trust their opinion on who to go talk to, as I know all of the officers personally and can vouch for them all.

Don't just rely on this forum, some of the best and most helpful people residing in your area are not on this forum, and you'll miss out if you don't seek them out.

Trust me on this, you need to do your HW and spend time talking with fellow D owners that know the cars before you even think about going to look at one. You'll learn so much in the first couple of hours it'll make your head spin, but in the end you won't be out thousands when you buy a car and problems set it that are easily avoidable if you know what you're looking for.
