View Full Version : Could this be why the Gold DeLorean is no longer displayed at the Petersen Museum?

It looks like the Petersen Museum is quietly selling off nearly 120 cars from it's collection:

Chris Burns recently posted a picture of their 24K Gold DeLorean (the Snyder, TX bank car) outside of the museum, and shortly after that, the car was listed as "not on display" on the Petersen Museum's website. I wonder if the Gold DeLorean is one of the cars they are preparing to sell?

I saw that earlier and wondered the same thing but I didn't see it in the auction listing. There is a standard SS car listed but its not clear if it is from the Petersen.

That is quite possible. Then again it mentions where they can get a loaner car if they want to display something like it again. With only 4 in the world I doubt they'd sell of the gold D. On a side note, why does it take 30k a year to display a Veyron?

Crikey. That's a bundle.
Is it because at least in part they have to accrue for the cost of the replacement tires which will age out soon? At $42,000 per set?
Or maybe they are also accruing for the eventual transmission replacement, which soaks up $120K. Plus labor. But the tranny won't age out in a museum.....

They most likely moved it down stairs to the Vault.

:poke:
Just to be the 15th person tho quote that question :
As a business, they may have leased a few cars off at a good rate cause they are not being driven and may have a better resale as a museum item for the leasing company.
So that may be the annual lease plan plus any expenses covered!:headscratch:

I thought about the lease thing as well but they stated they auctioned it off for 924k. I guess they could have paid off the lease with the auction.

Because I was thinking of visiting this museum later this year - mainly to see this vehicle.

Yeah, that guy was being a total a-hole. The fact that guy put up with the same idiotic 'joke' for so long was amazing, after the second or maybe third consecutive FC joke, I would have ended the 'interview'. I really hope you guys don't have to deal with as many of these BTTF joke morons who are this overly obnoxious, if so, I'm sorry t hear that.

I can't see the interview going on as long as it did, without Everyone going along with the FC jokes.
Quotes from the video and comments.
"Only a couple thousand of them were made before they ran out of money???"
"Why gull wing doors? Too my way of thinking, gull wing doors only make a styling statement. They serve no useful function. Nobody else had attempted to put a Gull Wing door in an automobile."???
And Why did he have to pull the door up???
Somebody better give this guy access to the internet.

hahahahahah!
What a bozo! Not a drop of humor in his blood. First he has half of the facts wrong about the D and then he has such an uninviting temper.
Ridiculous, had to call the "Security" to take care of it.
It's fun pissing off tight a$$ people!:approve:

I guess the Struts were busted. Museum didn't replace them.

Here's another article from the NY Times discussing this sell off:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/28/automobiles/collectibles/a-furor-over-sales-by-the-petersen-museum.html?hp&_r=0
For those wanting to see the 24K Gold DeLorean, the article states that The Vault has recently been opened to visitors. Obviously we don't know why the car has been removed from display- conservation, possible sale, or exhibit rotation... but perhaps a call to the museum could settle the matter?
Here is a statement released by the Petersen:

Looks like they're upfitting their building & it's exhibits, and some cars are undergoing restoration. Maybe the 24k Gold DeLorean will surface again after the dust settles?

I'm moving out to Sherman Oaks in August and was planning on visiting the museum soon after. I'll take a look when I'm there.
