The Restoration of Vin # 6779 Has Begun!

Vin# 6779 has been sitting in a garage about a mile from me in Munster, IN for about ten years. PO claims it had been run at least one every 6 months. It currently has 21k miles, body is in very good shape, and the engine is quite clean.

Here is the first photo of it at it's new home!

So my very first project was to drain of the fluids starting with the fuel.

Thanks to the great "How-To" posts here, I was able to jump right in.

Once the pump was removed I ran into my first two issues:

The first being the 6-7 gallons of "fuel" that we pumped out and the residue it left behind!

The second issue is that when I pulled the pump, there was nothing attached to it...No Hose, No Baffle...Where could it have gone???

I've almost completely cleaned out the tank and other than a small piece of metal, have found no signs of the pieces.

...And so it begins!

Oh... Wow. Good luck, this looks like it will be an interesting resurrection to follow! Who knows what other gems you'll run across. :)

Good luck in the resto. What is the context of that first photo, it looks like antifreeze? Was that in your fuel tank?

And, not to be a pedant, but your previous posts were about 6773. Is this the same car? :confused0:

Your D looks Great. What are you looking to restore?

So I did not get the line about your engine coolant with the debris and "fuel". What did you mean?
The fuel pump's hose is still attached to the tanks filter and tray inside your tank. You will find it (I hope) when you stick your hand in it to clean the interior. Unless somebody was tired of dirt that got caught up in there removed it and let the fuel pump suck fuel from the top keeping the tank full all the time ! :P

Yes that is indeed 7 gallons of oxidized rancid fuel, pulled from the tank, despite everyone's insistence that it is anti-freeze! (I read on a Corvette forum that someone may have mixed regular and racing fuel, which can cause that?)

As of now, I pulled the pump, it had no hoses, and there was no baffle...I can only assume it was a repair gone horrible wrong!

I pulled the injectors today (That last one was a pain!) and I am going to have them cleaned. Going to see Dave and Julee later this week when I have my shopping list, and hopefully we will be at a point where I can try to start it soon!

As a correction, this is in fact #6779 from Nov. '81. The plate was quite dirty, and the 9 is sitting on the box, so we all thought it was a 3 until we cleaned the plate thoroughly. According to the VIN database, #6779 was originally sold to someone in nearby Bloomingdale, IL so everything checks out with that.

I have never seen such green stuff in fuel. Hope somebody did not confuse the windshield wiper water tap with the fuel tap both being under the front hood, and then wondered why it won't start.

Did you try to let a few drops on concrete and light it up if it burns all out?

The green you see when mixing those two fuels is not that green! It looks more like Diesel and has a rather transparent look. Yours is TOTALY green!:umm:

Yes, I was to say the least shocked when I saw that fuel. I highly doubt someone would take the time to put 5+ gallons of coolant or another fluid into the gas tank...But stranger things have happened. I've worked on small engines before, and you find a lot of lawnmowers and the like that have been sitting for a while with fuel that smells very similar. Some forums say that it's safe to mix with fresh fuel and use it, but I won't risk that, so yes I think A test burn is in order.
