View Full Version : Fuel Fuel distributor time?

I'm trying to find out if my car needs a new fuel distributor. I pulled all the injectors to rule out a problem there and put the fuel lines in glass jars to measure the amount of fuel coming from each line. This is what I found, lines 4-6 all filled the jars with about a quarter inch of fuel. Lines 1-3 filled the jars to about a half inch of fuel, double than lines 4-6. Line 1 was a little less then 2 and 3 but I suspect some fuel spilled while running the pump. It seems consistent but also lopsided. Dose this indicate a bad fuel distributor?

The difference could also be plugged up/dirty injectors if you did the test with them connected. That is more likely.

Swap the injector lines at the distributor and flow the injectors again. If you have inconsistent consistent injector flow moving between cylinders it is an injector based problem. If the problem stays in the in the same spot. (IE same port different injector) look at the fuel distributor as the issue.

A lot of different things come into play. How old is the distributor, control pressure, injector age, fuel age. Don't start hanging parts until every test possible has been completed and findings compared.

I had removed the injectors prior to doing the test. The WUR and FD and mixture control unit are original to the car. It just seems really weird that one side pumps more fuel than the other. The car has been running rich lately. Co was set a year ago

If the fuel quantity in one or more chambers differs from others, your car will not drive well.
Guys who were at DCS 2008 (Gettysburg) know I had problems with the fuel quantities.
This resulted in stuttering and shocking run between apprx. 2200 ~ 2700 RPM.

If the fuel quantity in for a certain cylinder is rich, the Lambda electronics lessen the fuel quantity.
Should the next cylinder's quantity be about half of the previous, lessening it will decrease the already insufficient quantity.
Thus making the car drive lousy.

If this is your case after following the prior given advises, it may be time to "overhaul" your FD.
Buying a "new" (better call it "another") FD may leave you with the same result.
Having a Bosch dealer overhaul your FD may turn out to be less expensive.
Totally new (prices run up to some USD 1600, with core charge), if there still are new, will be hard to find.

Should you want to get another FD, go and look for one used by Renault (a.o. Alpine) which have adjustment screws on the outside (no need to open the FD with all of the risks involved).
This type's FD number you can use is: Bosch 0-438-100-105.

I would run the test with the injectors attached. Mine takes about 30 to 60 seconds to get 6 oz. of fuel from each with the pressure plate pushed about half way down. My FD is also the adjustable one which cost far less to buy then the OEM FD.

Thanks for all the advice on this. I have found a rebuild kit for the FD and I'm considering rebuilding it myself. It doesen't look to compicated, just requiring a lot of detail work. Before i do this i think i'll run pressure checks on the WUR to see that is orperating correctly. I'm going to put the newly cleaned injectors back in tonight and see how this changes things. I'm also going to replace the o rings on PPR in the FD because I had a hot start issue and a fairly new accumulator. The car does run well, just a little on the rich side. I need to get a fuel pressure tool to measure the pressures.

Any other ideas would be great.
