When was the last time a D was painted?

We know that there are a couple of hundred painted cars, either dealer painted of as a method of repairing the stainless after an accident, usually in the 80s.

But when was the last time a car was voluntarily painted just to change the look? 10 years? 20 years?

Any owners of painted cars have a date when they were painted?

The red one that was at DCS last year was painted about 7 years ago according to the owner.

We painted a car Ferrari red in 2009. We "did it right" and removed all panels etc for prep and paint.

I would say MOST cars were painted by choice rather than covering up any damage. I would guess that very FEW painted cars are hiding Damage. That said, as JOSH mentioned in the Black Car for Sale thread, It IS a Crap Shoot. You really don't know until you STRIP it or a Carfax search shows prior reported Damage History.

The car we painted was not due to damage. We did streamline the car and shaved the door locks, no rub strip etc. I remember taking the DA to the hood of a perfectly fine car like it was yesterday and muttering "FML" under my breath.

That's funny you mentioned Owning a RED car in the Black Car for sale thread. But you failed to state (clarify) in your first post here that YOUR car was was painted in 2009 for its previous owner at the time.

Did you spray the paint or just the Prep work?

Sorry I should have clarified. I end up buying a lot of cars. Did all of the prep work minus paint and reassembled.

My currently black D has been red while it resided in CA.
When its ownership transferred to TX the car has been painted black.

The latter must have been taken place sometime between 29.01.2003 (moved to TX) and 08.06.2007 or after.
The latter date is when the PO started buying parts for rebuilding #06513.
Anyway it was black when I purchased the car May 25th 2008.

My car was believed to be factory painted, but no evidence saying either way. It was painted in the 90's though. The car came from Florida (at least 96-98) and was put up in an auction on the east coast somewhere (99). An exotics dealer in New Jersey bought it from that action (99) and sold to a gentleman from Missouri (99). I found his contact information and gave him a call a few weeks back. He indicated the car was indeed red and he handed it over to his mechanic upon bringing it home. The mechanic found strange things, such as sand sitting on top of the radio. My interior seems to be in very good shape so this is strange. I did notice heavy rusting on my seat rails as well though. His mechanic concluded the car was in some sort of storm, being in Florida. I told him about the poor condition of my panels (everything had damage) and we concluded the damage could very well be from a storm; something falling on the car. So my current thinking is the car was painted sometime in the 90s. I would love to get ahold of the Florida owner though to see if it was SS before hand.

Mine was a red delorean with failing red paint due to the underlying bodywork failing. I removed the paint and realized it really needed new doors and rear panels. Its now 100% stainless again thanks to DMC Midwest whom I got some used panels at a good price from.
