What is the purpose of this part?

The part in question is 108597. I reinstalled my crossgate cable and adjusted it and everything seems to work fine with this part removed.

Am I missing something here or is my current setup fine?

That's the cable bracket that is connected to cable at one end and part no 106653 at the other end.

One may wonder how exactly you have your crossgate adjusted, as this bracket is the basis for that adjustment. Perhaps provide a picture of the top of your transmission?

I can take a picture. The cable is mounted to the other (sturdier) bracket. 106653. Attached is a picture. I adjusted it by loosening and tightening the nuts according on either side of the bracket.

Apparently some engineer somewhere didn't think the sturdier bracket was enough to hold alignment long term. If that thing bends in the slightest you will lose reverse or 5th gear.

Generally it isn't a good idea to leave parts off.

Ahhh I know how it fits on now. I do agree it is a bad idea to leave parts off. I have noticed there are lots of poor design features of this car, now i question things.
