Anyone planning to see the new Ron Howard movie "Rush" about '70s F1 stars James Hunt and Nikki Lauda?

I still haven't seen Senna (sorry Josh), but I really would like to see this one.

They were the pin-up stars of the period, chalk and cheese opposites in attitude and lifestyle.

I'll wait for it to be shown on one of the movie channels.

Man you've really MUST see Senna!!! He was my favorite all-time driver. Had he not been killed and had F1 not F-ed him over by the political ban for the one season, I really think he would have the all-time records for championships, wins, etc.

I saw the previews for "Rush" last night. At first I got super excited because they just showed the title and I thought it was about my favorite rock band. Best I can tell, it appears to be worth the watch.

Definitely looking forward to this one! Back in the 80's I'm not sure which I preferred, watching F1...or listening to Murray the Mouth and Hunt the Shunt on the Beeb!

The last time I went to see a racing film at the theater, I was thoroughly disappointed - Driven (2001).

Need I say more? Even the Daniel Sadek funded Red Line (2007) was better than that turkey, and that's not saying much!

LOL. I *love* watching exotic cars, but I'll admit Redline is a bad movie.

Big time fail there. Singapore is one of my favorite Grand Prix to watch. It's the only night race on the F1 circuit currently. I'm planning to drive down to Austin in the next year or two for the Circuit of the Americas. It won't be this year though.

Between COTA and the future New Jersey Grand Prix, I'm hoping US interest in F1 will rise.

I'm checking my mail box daily at this point.... My girlfriends company supplied her with two paddock club passes for the Austin weekend. I will be no where to be found for about 96 hours. Feel free to watch for me on sky sports and nbcsn!

The points are going to fall perfectly into place with Vettel winning his fourth consecutive title right before my eyes!

Then there is Sao Paulo which I am equally excited for. Unfortunately my tickets are nothing special for this weekend aside from the fact that I'm sitting on the "Senna S".

Port authority will be the pinnacle of F1 next year. The problem is America is too stupid to realize what F1 is. I blame poor racing leadership within the country allowing such sporting events as Nascar and the equally pitiful Izod series to exist. The FIA should be in control of everything not allowing red neck sports with cars that can only turn left.

We should also remove that terrible blood sport "Football" from Sunday's and Mondays. I mean seriously when was the last time you heard of an F1 driver renting a car, picking up a "buddy" and double tapping him in the chest because he looked at his half sisters cousin wrong.

and if the argument for F1 isn't already good enough. It IS the most followed sport in the world, with the most highly trained athletes, in a peak physical condition rivaled by few with endorsements dwarfing even the best in basketball and baseball.

You would be sickened by what a Spanish bank pays a certain Spaniard.

As much as I get tired of seeing the same guy win all the time, I do recognize the importance of what Vettel is doing with his all but assured 4-peat. I went through similar feelings with Schumacher 10 years ago. One of two things is happening (1) Vettel is really THAT good. (2) Red Bull is cheating somehow. I'd like to think it's the first thing, but time will tell. Red Bull signing Riccardo and not Raikkonen probably won't tell us much, unless Riccardo turns in impressive finishes next season.

I personally despise Nascar, but I don't dump on those who follow it. It's just not for me. Much of the same can be said for Indy racing. Oval tracks are a beating for me.

I only dump on them because of the atmosphere that the loyal fans like. RV's, excessive drinking and partying at the track. Acting crazy and happy when a massive wreck occurs. (half the reason why they even go)

Formula 1 is the pinnacle of everything.

Part of me says Vettel is "that good" the other part says that Newey is cheating like hell. But why can't the Aussie hold with Seb? Age? The more you read into the last 25 years of F1 the more upsetting it is. Scary to think that the mastermind behind current F1 dominance was the one who killed the greatest driver of all time.

I liken Webber these days to Coulthard in his last couple of years. He's over the hill and no longer sharp or consistently competitive. Plus he's a giant whiner. Whining in this sport is the quickest way for me to hate on a particular driver (remember Hamilton a couple of season ago?).

I'm really hoping Lotus gets their financial situation squared-up so they can get a replacement for Raikkonen and stay competitive. They're one of my favorite teams.

I've got a picture somewhere at home of Senna driving the John Player Lotus. I know his championships were with McLaren but that was one of my favorite cars he drove. Before the 87 yellow Camel Lotus. My pops was at the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix and saw Senna race (then with Toleman). Kiki Rosberg, Nico's dad, won that race. I was just a boy. I would like to have seen Senna race in person.

I love the story behind the Dallas GP and how it nearly didn't even happen.

F1 is alright. But being a desert rat at heart, I'm more of an off-road fan.

I have a recent trip to Ireland and I took the opportunity to treat myself to an F1 double-header on the plane as both Rush and Senna were available on the in-flight entertainment system. Found both of them fascinating and really well done, but I had forgotten that Senna was more of a documentary. I have to say that I enjoyed Rush more, but I didn't know a lot of the details in the Senna one too.

I watched them chronologically so it was odd to see real footage of Hunt and Lauda at the start of Senna after 90 minutes of Helmsworth and Bruhl. Lauda was still competing but Hunt was a commentator at that point.

When I got to my mom and dad’s house I found this sticker on a trash can in my old room. I think it dates from about 1976 when he was racing old (or new) Vauxhalls. Don't recall how he did this alongside his F1 career. Maybe the offseason?

You're right in that Senna was more of a documentary. It was actual footage and factual information whereas Rush was a recreation focusing on the 76 season for entertainment purposes. That said Senna was my favorite but I enjoyed Rush too. I like the intensity from the actor who played Lauda. According to those who know and have worked with him, Lauda is that intense.

Lauda is currently one of the guys behind the Mercedes Petronas F1 team (the team with the fastest cars so far this season and who will probably lock-up a constructor championship in the next half dozen races). While I was watching the race in Bahrain last Sunday seeing Hamilton and Rosberg battle I could hear Lauda in my head saying "Let them race!". A handful of laps later Paddy Lowe came on the radio and told both drivers he wanted to see both cars on the finish line.

Somewhat related, here's a picture of the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix featuring race winner Keke Rosberg coming down the straight with Big-Tex (pre-fire) and the Cotton Bowl in the background.

One for Josh, though I'm sure he knows:

Tomorrow, May 1st is 20 years since Senna's crash. Although it is already May 1st where it happened.

For anyone interested, Velocity channel is playing Senna again tonight at 7 central. I highly recommend it. The Velocity Twitter feed is also posting info from 20 years ago today. Interesting stuff.
