Last week I took the D out for a spin, and couldn't shift into 1st easily. At first I thought the worst, but turns out it's the second gear roll pin. Someone has forced reverse and it has sheered off.

Inspecting the gear lever, it LOOKS like it was welded in there, but possibly just very tight fit? Should I be able to grip the remaining section towards the centre console switches and pull it back, then force another pin in there, or does the whole lever need to come out to do it?

If it's the second one, can this easily be done without affecting any linkages etc? I'm quite good with simple mechanics, but always best to ask the pros first.

Cheers.

One of us is confused. The infamous second gear roll pin is inside the gear box.

I think you mean the reverse lever "roll pin". From memory that is just pressed in. And yes you can pull the gear shift assembaly without upsetting adjusments.

Might it be a good idea to replace these roll pins with coil pins?

This is an easy fix, but as stated not the 2nd gear roll pin. I changed mine out when it was in the car with a punch and a hammer.

If you are having difficulties shifting into gear, you may need to adjust your crossgate cable. Martin put together an excellent video. he describes the symptoms very well so you will be able to determine if this is an issue as well.

I do indeed mean the reverse lever roll pin :-)

Whilst doing a bit of investigation, and knowing that I couldn't get second coming crom third gear, I assumed that's what I was called.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll pop over and give it a good tap with a hammer. So it should just pop right through the opposite side? I think given how tight it is, I will need to remove the gear lever and do this on a bench. So this is quite easy to do then, just a couple of bolts to remove?

Brilliant video Josh! Thanks for that, I'm sure that will come in useful one day. Added to favourites ;-)

So if you give it a good tap from the centre console side, it should pop through the other side and then you can do the same by popping the new one in? It's a bit of a bugger to get good clearance as there's a really useful time handle in the way :rolleyes1:

Thanks for the info. Is there a guide on how to take just the gear lever out, possibly a video?

exactly. However I did not account for the time circuits, lol

Don't you mean precisely?

Hmm. Luckily it was built by a genius, and very good usability so most things are very easy to maintain, but this looks a bit tricky without removing the gearbox lever :-( Cheers again Josh, much appreciated.

p.s. Is it quite easy to remove just the gear lever so that I can get easy access to the reverse pin? I'm planning on doing it tonight so it's good for the weekend so any help on which bolts I need to undo to not affect anything else would be great!

That pin gets broken because someone didn't know to lift the knob to get past the reverse lock-out, forces it and bends and breaks it. If you can get the broken pieces out you can get a pin in without removing the gearshift. You can also get a smaller pin to hammer inside the larger pin after you get the larger one in to strengthen it.

I can't really complain too much. Even though it was a bit silly/careless, It's a free space to store the car and very secure. I have now explained to them how to get reverse and to be gentle.

The better news, I managed to get some grips on the remaining pin and pull it out without removing the transmission. I then sqweezed another roll pin in a vice and it fit like a dream. It's back in action, and I've learnt something news about Deloreans
