Check out this picture of the 1980 RSX Mustang Concept. Those windows look familiar to me. Thank goodness this car never made it into production.

I think it looks kinda cool. The rear is intriguing to me. Too bad we can't see the rest of it. It should be noted I'm not a Mustang fan.

I'm a huge Mustang fan but the early 80s Mustangs were some of the ugliest ever made. They didn't get decent again until 85 then 87-93. I've seen windows that were similar to the Delorean but not exact. Those look exactly like a Delorean window. Wonder what window motor they used.

The mustang II's of the mid to late seventies were the all time crappiest cars ever produced.

While I did not care for the grill on the 83-84 Mustangs, I did like the look of the early 80's Mustang GT's, and the specialty versions were even better.
I was really close to purchasing the car below a couple years ago, which may have taken a few of the styling cues from the 1980 RSX Mustang Concept.

Totally impractical, totally outrageous, but also totally cool, in my opinion.

Odd that you'd put in a window like that on a normal swing out door.

I'm curious to how this could have happened. Was this a common window design floating around the car design world in the late 70's?

Interesting question.
Not so sure about it being popular in that time frame.
Here are a few cars with "DeLorean" windows made before and after the D. from oldest to newest. Am limiting the answer to production cars - and the F1 kind of pushes that boundary.
Lambo Countach LP400, ~'74-'78 and perhaps later. OK, these were rectangular but still a sort of toll-booth affair.

Subaru SVX (Giugiaro designed it!) from '91 to '96

McLaren F1 -'92-'96

Look carefully at them to guess why the drop glass was designed that way. My guess is that none of the designers started with small drop glass sections. It was a necessary result of some limit due to door size/design and glass size/height/position/angle?
Anybody know of others that make this list? Include model the year range.

I'm a fan of the Cobra SVO. I loved the grill-less look.

Also the Toyota Sera, 1990-1996

Score!
Now THERE is a car with door glass that will certainly not roll down as 1 piece. It's so large it's also part of the roof.
Thanks.

I would tend to agree. My grandma had one and it was a real turd. It looked a lot like this:

I think this is a real improvement considering the previous generation:
http://static.ddmcdn.com/gif/1982-1983-1984-1985-1986-ford-mustang-3.jpg
Moving away from looks, the performance was absolutely horrific during these two generations of Mustang (or Mustang II).
The 1980-81 Mustang holds an embarrassing record. Here's the text from Wikipedia (assuming this information is accurate): "Following the second oil crisis in 1979, the 302 cu in (4.9 L) was dropped in favor of a new 255 cu in (4.2 L) V8 due to its better fuel economy. It was the only V8 offered in 1980 and 1981. Basically a de-bored 302, the 4.2 L V8 had restrictive heads and managed to produce 120 hp (89 kW), the lowest power ever for a Mustang V8."
Yea I know the oil shortages and new EPA regs were causing headaches for the industry but wow. We sure have come a long way compared to today's automobiles.
That makes the DeLorean's 130HP V6 look like a real performance model
Aside from that, the fox platform Mustang was successful overall and spanned the longest tenure for and generation of Mustang (14 years --> 1979 to 1993). That says something.
Again, I'm not a Mustang guy. I grew up a Ford guy and converted to a GM guy. I've owned Mercedes, Volvo, Audi, Ford, Chevy, Jeep, Pontiac, Cadillac, Toyota, Acura, and of course the D.

I must remember that. "In 1981, the DeLorean had more horsepower than a V8 Mustang".
