I just put a new rear wheel bearing in and the car was driven only a couple of times and the damn nut came off of the CV shaft. I torqued the nut to 250 Ft lbs. The splines looked pretty darn worn out and i think it was rocking back and forth on the splines even with the nut tight. I know the splines in the the hub are worn but the CV shaft splines will be changed on principle. Before i fork out the money though, is there a way to measure the CV shaft splines? Also has this happened to any one else? On a side note i knew the splines were worn before putting it back together but had no clue this would happen. Meh.. i am out a 30 dollar bearing for taking the $400 gamble on whether it stayed together. The hub is $150 and the CV shaft end is $187. Plus shipping. I just thought it would twist the splines out of the hub not loosen the nut.

I have seen the splines fail on a couple of cars. When that happens the stub axle spins in the hub. Due to the direction of rotation that could unscrew the nut on the right hand side.

Strange failure, appears to be a rust issue. Fortunately very unusual. Replace both parts and the nut. Probably the bearing again too. Also put some anti-seize on the splines.
