Starter solenoid circuit modification

Hi,

I was wonder about the Starter Mod Wire, it says it is for cars prior to 2547. My car is 2964, I take it I wont need this??

Hardly, unfortunately. I've modified vins past 3600 that have not had the mod completed. Your best bet is to do a visual inspection. Post pics of the underside of your relay if you need help knowing if it has been done.

Ok will do thank you!!! What size/gauge wire would you recommend? And what color wire? Color is important!!! lol kidding about that!!

The recommended 14g wire is fine and if you want to follow the bulletin to the "T", use brown wire.

When I needed to do this several years ago, Grady (and I am sure the other DMC vendors) had the wire already made up and crimped properly. Might save you some time.

I don’t have a scanner so I had to take a picture of the document I’ve had since 2001 provided by DeLorean Motor Center who are now known as DMC California.

On vehicles whose Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is prior to 2547, in certain operating conditions the starter solenoid’s operating voltage was not high enough to ensure consistent, reliable operation. This condition is displayed by a voltage drop characteristic in the main wiring harness in a vehicle having a slightly discharged battery. To correct this condition a starter circuit modification was introduced into production vehicles starting with VIN #2548.
This condition in generally revealed by a clicking noise heard coming from the starter solenoid, but with no starter cranking happening. If this is happening in your vehicle, we recommend that you make the following modification as soon as possible to eliminate this sometimes irritating problem:

1. Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery. Then, remove the relay compartment access panel located just behind the passenger seat.

2. Partially remove the relay strip containing the starter motor relay.

3. Disconnect the white/yellow pigtail jumper wire from its relay terminal (#86). Cut and move the jumper from its white/red connector (per Figure D-2).

4. Disconnect the white/red wire (i.e., the one from which the pigtail was removed in Step 3 above) from terminal 30/51 and connect it to terminal 86 as shown in Figure D-3.

5. Using 14-gauge brown wire, assemble a 12-inch jumper wire with one end being a female locking barb and the other modification to accommodate the new eye connector.

6. Connect one end of the brown jumper wire to terminal 30/51 to the starter relay (see Figure D-3). Connect the other terminal with the eye connector to the short terminal or battery side of the 25 amp (N) circuit breaker.

7. Position and secure the relay panel, replace the access cover, reconnect battery, and recharge battery, if necessary.

This wire is nice, but if you have the newer post style circuit breakers, then you'll need to cut off the female blade connector and add a ring terminal. You may be able to get a relay socket style blade connector and build the wire up yourself.
