Removed My Steering Column Today, One Question Though....

Hey Everyone,

Quick Question

I removed my steering Column today with no problems. (Thats a first!) The surrounding "Crumple Cage" had finally split in two again. I had it repaired previously by DMC-CA a few years ago while it was in the car, so the job wasn't done to its best ability. Anywho... I Called and got advice from Toby up at DMC-NW before I took on the task of removal. He is so helpful and takes the time to walk people through things, top notch customer service.

Although I forgot to ask Toby, After removing the column I found some areas that looked like they had old grease on them. One of these spots was toward the end of the column at the end of the Crumple Cage. I am curious if anyone here knows if I should grease some certain parts of the column before I re-install it tomorrow. Any help or knowledge in this area would be appreciated.

Are you talking about the "grease" on the welds?

If so, this is not grease. Those brownish spots are a residue left over from welding. I believe it is excess argon reacting with the air. It is present on every mig weld on steel. Just part of the process.

For actual grease points, I would put some lithium grease on the shaft where it passes through the bushing on the firewall.

You nailed it. A brownish grease. There is a bit of it at the very end of column where the cage ends.
