Have many D owners on here installed these? Does anyone have any pics?
Anyone that has installed them have any reviews and feedback? How is the light output? Looks like there are quite a few different brands and variations available online (just at a quick glance at the Amazon link).

Not sure. I am looking for the one with the round lite in middle. Not sure if it does that.

I've seen a could - mostly cheap plastic crap. But probably brighter than the OE lights anyway.

Or you can do a custom halo job like I did on my Goldwing:
Those are inserts and go into the original headlights.

I think LED headlights for the Delorean are around the corner. Great alternative to the Xenon that are available. The xenon gets very hoy and I was affraid the front facia would start to warp so I passen on Xenon.
LED is a great alternative, but they are deeper and the buckets might need an installation ring instead. I heard some people are working on that now.
I installed that plastic one too. It looks good with the lights of. They are the angel eye version. But it remains plastic....

Jan, Any pics you could post for us? I would love to see what your halo lights look like. For the low price that they are available online (only $30 bucks!?), if they look good and have as good or better light output than my crappy OEMs then I can get past them being plastic until someone makes something better as you mentioned may be coming. Hope to see some pics of your halos please!

This is the best picture I could find, I do not have them with the lights on, but I will see to do this nect weekend.
I am not replacing the regular ones becasue it is so hard to so, and I scratched my facia doing tha tth last time. I am waiting for the LED ones.
But one tip I can give you. Clean your lenses from the inside. remove the bulp and the bracket, and clean the lens inside, it looks a lot better!!

We went to the Swedish delorean event this year and on the way back we stopped at the Airbus plant in Hamburg which was a pretty neat sight. We saw one od the big Beluga airbus planes taking off, and a brand new A380 leaving the plant.
The guys were nice enough to allow our cars to park in front of the main entrance for the picture.

eBay. However, I see another site that has them for $340:
http://www.tlg-auto.com/JW_Speaker_8800_4x6_Low_Beam_Headlights_p/led-8800l.htm
When I first looked at getting these, they were about $400 each, so the price is dropping! I'll probably get a set for the low beam (skip the highs since I rarely use them) when I remove the front fascia for repainting and repair my bent/rusty headlight brackets. Just not sure when that will be and I'm in no rush since I'm sure the price will keep dropping and there may be more options in the future.

Found these square halos that are glass lenses (not plastic) and they look pretty good and only $50 bucks on amazon. Has anyone else considered these? I can't find the same replacement for the brights though. Would I be able to get a second pair and use a differnet bulb for the brights?

Ahhh, I gotcha... you were talking LED's and I was talking halos. Thats why I was confused when you were talking $300-$400 when I was seeing 4x5 Halo options on Amazon for less than $50 per pair. I posted the link in my post just above. Now if someone will just create a halo LED light that is affordable we would all win.

Glass lenses were phased out of cars decades ago now. Since plastic has a tendency to give vs breaking like glass, plastic lenses may be a better option than you think. Plus, they are lighter than glass, too. Just some things to think about. :hmm:

The lights on that site are intriguing. I'm not interested in the angel eyes, but the non angel eye version appears to be a projector, and additionally the drop down list lists an HID version as well. Are there drawbacks to using these on a Delorean? Ive become so used to having HIDs on all of my cars its a bit of a bummer using the old school headlights on the D.

I know plenty of people have done it, including the vendors- but I'd be wary of installing HID/Xenon headlights in a DeLorean. They draw a tremendous amount of power, and we are all keenly aware of the electrical issues DeLoreans face without adding power hogging features. HID/Xenon lights also create a prolific amount of heat. The area above the headlights in DeLorean fascias is just so thin & flimsy. I'd also be concerned the searing heat from HID/Xenon lights could really deform the fascias, even if they have reinforcing bars installed. The DeLorean headlights are abysmal, I'll give you that. But I would personally wait for LED headlights to get a bit cheaper. They're brighter than HID/Xenons, produce no heat, and draw a fraction of the power of traditional incadescents.
Also, many DeLoreans suffer from poor headlight alignment, which in turn leads to poor forward illumination. Shine your car's lights on a very dark wall at night; or simply stand behind the car in a gravel parking lot & see if your headlights are askew (funnily enough, squinting your eyes helps you see the beam direction/pattern better). Just getting the stock lights properly adjusted does wonders. Especially considering 1) they probably left the factory completely wrong 2) many cars have been worked on by people who have no idea what they're doing 3) many DeLoreans have been lowered- but folks didn't think to adjust the headlights to compensate.

I have, and this can be prevented with proper sealing or fixed with some toothpaste and fifteen minutes of elbow grease. I had a 2002 Camry for 12 years that never had trouble with its large plastic lenses. This seems like a trivial issue to motivate such aversion to plastic lenses. Is there any more to it?

I'm sorry to say this but I have to disagree with your post. I have extensive experience with HID lights, automotive and commercial. I have installed HIDs in quite a few cars and my own motorcycle. Also, I feel I should add that I didn't just install it to see what happens. I took measurements on power consumption, heat generation and electrical noise/interference. Here's what I know based on my knowledge of automotive HID lights.
I'd be wary of installing HID/Xenon headlights in a DeLorean. They draw a tremendous amount of power, and we are all keenly aware of the electrical issues DeLoreans face without adding power hogging features.
Not true!
The most common automotive HID bulbs are D2S and D2R. They are rated at 35W. The ballast (the power supply box) has an efficiency of about 90 to 95%. The entire setup uses about 42W. That is actually LESS than your regular headlight bulb. If you use H4 bulb for the outboard lights they use 55W on low beam. That is about 13W more than HID Xenon.
By converting to HID you will actually lower the stress on your electrical system.
One note - HIDs have a high energy requirement at start up and that might be the source of the misinformation. At start up the ballast needs to create about 1100 - 1500V DC at high current to start the electrical arc. This high loading only lasts about half a second and after that the bulb requires 85V AC to keep going.
HID/Xenon lights also create a prolific amount of heat. The area above the headlights in DeLorean fascias is just so thin & flimsy. I'd also be concerned the searing heat from HID/Xenon lights could really deform the fascias, even if they have reinforcing bars installed.
Not true!
HID creates a lot less heat that regular halogen bulbs. In my installation where I have replaced a H4 bulb with a D2S (along with projector optics) the headlight housing temperature has dropped significantly. Since this was on a motorcycle where everything around was made out of ABS plastic I needed to make sure there was no danger of melting anything. After extensive testing it turned out that average temperature inside the headlight assembly has dropped from some 180 degrees F to about 100F. Almost 50% less heat!
The warping in the fascia has nothing to do with the heat from the headlights. If you look at different DeLoreans you will notice that the "eyebrows" form right above the inboard lights but most people don't even use high beams!
The DeLorean headlights are abysmal, I'll give you that.
OEM type sealed beams are simply horrible, I'll give you that. Upgrade with something decent and you will not believe the difference. I got a set of Hella lights with H4 bulb for the outboard and H1 for the inboard. Big difference! The 4656 sealed beams are so bad that they are illegal in Europe.
But I would personally wait for LED headlights to get a bit cheaper. They're brighter than HID/Xenons, produce no heat, and draw a fraction of the power of traditional incadescents.
I'm sorry, but you're wrong again.
The LEDs are not brighter than HIDs because they can't be. The maximum brightness for a headlight is actually set by law at 3400 lumens. D2S is rated at 3200 lumens. No matter what source of light you choose it can't be more than that.
High power LEDs create a lot of heat. LEDs capable of producing 3200 lumens create more heat that HID bulbs and actually consume more power than D2S. A good example is a Luminus Devices CST-90 LED. Its light output is 3200 lumens, with typical supply of 3.7V @ 13.5A. Total power requirement is 50W and this doesn't take the power supply into account.
This LED creates a lot of heat requiring a large heatsink and usually a fan to help dissipate the heat. This particular LED comes with a temperature sensor built-in to protect it from it's own heat and you need a special circuit that will monitor the temperature and lower the power output if the LED overheats.
Small low power LEDs do not produce any heat but if you want more light they start to get hot. Even the small LEDs I used for the door light modules do heat up. Not by much, but they do. Any LED that is more than about 1W will require a heatsink. Without one the LED will get damaged after just a few seconds.
The technology isn't here yet... it's still a few years away.
Also, many DeLoreans suffer from poor headlight alignment, which in turn leads to poor forward illumination.
considering 1) they probably left the factory completely wrong 2) many cars have been worked on by people who have no idea what they're doing 3) many DeLoreans have been lowered- but folks didn't think to adjust the headlights to compensate.
I agree with you 100% here. You are right. My first DeLorean had anti-aircraft headlights with almost no light on the road. My second one had one pointed way down and the other way up. So, yes, adjust your lights. Your best bet and easiest is to replace them with high quality Hella or Bosch lights that use replaceable H4 bulbs. The difference is amazing.

For now, high power LEDs are not as efficient and many low power LEDs. I think we will get lower power LED headlights in 3 or 4 years time. LEDs have always had the problem of double the current and you get way less than double the light output.

Hi Tom, it's the above comment in which I have most interest. Having some time ago read Daniel Stern Lighting (http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.html) I understand the need for proper optics when fitting an HID bulb - that it is not simply as easy as dropping a bulb into one of our H4 housings. How do you apply this to the DeLorean?

Hi Martin!
It's been a long time since we last talked. Good to hear from you again.
To answer your question, yes, it's not as easy as dropping a D2S into a H4 housing. You get lots of light in exactly the places you don't want it. I tried it and it simply didn't work. I wanted my conversion to be street legal and nice to the other drivers. What I did was I got an entire headlight assembly from a BMW 7 on an auction site. The light came off of an accident car and I've paid $15 for it. It was cracked and couldn't be used on a car but the optics inside, the D2S burner and a very nice Hella ballast were perfect. I cut the headlight open and removed the entire optical system. This is comprised of the reflector with a base for the D2S, a shutter that controls the beam shape and allows switching between hi and low beams, and a lens. Then I opened up my motorcycle headlight and mounted this entire assembly inside making sure it is straight and true. For the adjustments I reused the original posts in the Honda headlight. In case of the DeLorean it will be easier as the entire headlight is moved when adjusted. It was a little more difficult for the motorcycle where only the reflector was moving. Anyway, here are the results:
1. Off, 2. Parking lights on, 3. Low beam on.
227222272322724
As it came off of a BMW it had the "angel eye" ring on it so I kept it. I installed a 3W cool white LED to light it up. As it was a bi-xenon light I had low and high beam that was connected to the original switch. This setup was street legal and passed annual tests with flying colors.
I didn't convert my D lights yet but I will. Just keep in mind that the outside lens needs to be polished clear. You will need to disassemble the headlight and install the reflector-shutter-lens setup inside making sure you get it absolutely straight and true. If you turn it by just 1 degree the light will probably fail inspection. You need to make it perfect.
You will need to find an optical assembly that is as short as possible to make sure it fits inside out headlights. The BMW one might be too long. You'll have to take some measurements to make sure they fit.
Here's an example setup I got from an Audi. It's made by Hella.
22726
The entire assembly is 15.5cm long, the lens has a diameter of 8cm. You can see the shutter in the picture. This is again a bi-xenon light. For a regular low beam only light the shutter is fixed. For bi-xenon the shutter is connected to an electromagnet that moves it down for high beam. You will need to fabricate some kind of cover to make it all look nice from the front. For the Honda light I used the BMW "angel eyes" ring with it's base and a small stainless bowl with it's bottom cut out.
I would love to use LEDs with with a lens but because of the amount of heat they create and their sensitivity to high temperatures it will be difficult. The ones sold by JW Speaker have a light output of only 850 lumens compared to 1000 low beam/1650 high beam lumens for H4 and 3200 lumens for D2S xenon. So, I will probably go with xenon until LEDs improve in efficiency. Right now if I wanted to get the same brightness as D2S I would probably have to use liquid cooling and a large radiator. Makes no sense... plus, xenon will use less power.
