Jumping Oil Gauge

Out for a ride and I have noticed that my oil gauge is continuously jumping up and down at idle. Near as I can tell everything else seems fine.

Anyone have experience with this ?

Mine has been doing that ever since the day I bought the car. I verified proper oil pressure with an external mechanical gauge, and it was fine and steady. If you want that peace of mind, the external gauges are something like $20-$30 at Harbor Freight.

Mine does that, except WAY more erratically at idle. While driving it reads off the scale. Bad sending unit. I verified it by connecting the signal wire at the sender to ground, which read 0 on the gauge. Been meaning to replace it for a while now. Just keep forgetting every time I'm ordering parts :banghead:

Auto Zone stocks a replacement part - if I recall correctly it's around $15.
I don't remember the part number off the top of my head but could find it when I get home.

Yeah it was pretty tame in that video. Very erratic at other times. would go way past max and bounce around like crazy at idle.

I used part# PS133 from autozone on my car. Fits and seems to read correctly.

Its crap. I have gone through 3 of them so far, buts its a lifetime warranty. I typically just replace my sender ever oil change. They blow out after about 3,000 miles.

If we are talking about the oil pressure sensor then it's P/N 102763 from your favorite DeLorean vendor.

We're running fine on the first replacement unit that we put in about 6 or 7 years ago, bought from DMCH. The original one got jumpy when it began to fail after ~25 years and 50K miles. I guess we have at least 15 years left to go on this one.

I see DMCH part is $60. vs the autozone part which is $17.

Crazy thing - I think I may be the only (or one of the very, very few) owners with the factory original sender that not only works and doesn't leak, but is reading accurately as well.

Interesting that any such pressure senders should break so soon because there shouldn't be any more wear and tear on the sending unit on a PRV than on the sending unit for any other motor.

But I'm not saying the current ones are as good as the ones from some time back. It's possible that the ones they were selling 7 years ago are not from the same source as the ones they are selling now.

Also - would this be a warranty claim to them? Might be worth a call.

It's not as if the installation and use of the sender would have messed it up - unless somebody tried to wrench on the housing instead of the hex flange.
