Hey guys, is somebody out there who used to work and repair tape decks back then ?

I have three of the here that show the same problem, but due to the lack of datasheets
I don't know why they do this:

After a few minutes of playing tapes, the motor stops. it may try to start again a few times,
but just for a second or so. I can bridge the driving transistor then the motor runs - way too
fast, but it proves the motor is OK.

The motor driver chip SONY CX-065 seems to be OK, I replaced two and still see the same problem.
The daatsheets I found just tell me the pin configuration, but no real details what's going on inside,
if this is a safety function or ... ???

(the same chip is used in C64's floppy disk player :-) )

Any help or hint is appreciated.

Thanks, Elvis

HI Elvis,

I have no internal workings experience with the craig radio. However, I was a millennium Concours judge at DCS 2012. I did the "Operating controls"portion. We had three cars being judged then, two with craigs and one with ASI. Neither of the Craigs would play a tape. The consensus at the time was that the rubber belt(s) were dry and that the motor was slipping internally. Whether that was the cause of them not working is only speculation but certainly plausible. 30 year old rubber does deteriorate. I have not played a tape in my Craig since DCS 06 (chicago) driving tour. I suppose I should try it for OLD times sake just to see if mine still plays. Now, if I can only find a tape for it.:hmm:

Even if you can get the tape player going the tapes themselves will be a big source of trouble. The tape also ages and will stretch, break, and tangle. If you insist on getting the thing going it will cost you a lot of money and never work right. The best you can do is go to a place like Classic Car Radio who can gut it and replace the guts with modern stuff that will work. Look in Hemmings Motor news, there are many who can upgrade your radio to all the modern amenities and have it still look original. I am planning on doing something with my ASI this winter, it no longer will receive AM and the FM is very weak. I won't even try a cassette in it anymore. Now with Blue Tooth you can remote a C/D player or satellite receiver and control it all with a cell phone app. BTW, the original speaker cones are all dust. If you want intelligible sounds to come out you have to replace them all. As for the Craig, every time you open the door to the tape deck you flex that circuit board and when it fails you lose the display.

Elvis,

Probably an unlikely route for you, but I have both the Craig's and ASI's refurbished locally here in Vancouver and aux inputs added for iPhone/ipod use.

I can give you the contact information for the shop if you want to ship them for repair. You can also send them to me and I can drop them off for you.

The only time he's been unable to repair a unit is when he needs a part he doesn't have, which i why i tend to try and hoard Craig and ASI carcasses for parts.

Cheers,

Elvis

Tanks guys, but I get these radios to update the tuners, install my AUX input and repair the displays.
I also install Cinch outputs for amplifiers if people want it.

I do have new belts for the tapes and have the schematic in a good quality.

My question is - who has any experience or datasheet of that motor-speed-control chip ?
Sony CX-065 or M51725L or NTE1300

Why does it shutt off after a few minutes ?
The chip itself doesn't get hot.
That chip was sold at least 20 million times in the Commodore aera, so there must be more
details out there.

Thanks, but:

That's a totally different device

This is the datasheet I already had, but try to understand what's
going on inside and why it's shutting off after 2 minutes.

I sent NTE an email and asked for more details.
BTW - "TV Remote Control" is wrong.

I did a little search for those parts and all you get is web sites that show you the wrong components downloads. I did see the NTE data sheet but it did not show any design or explanation of how it works. I also saw a forum that did list the three devices you stated as alternatives.

BTW - "TV Remote Control" is wrong.Yeah , I saw where it also said "...designed foruse as a Frequency Servo Control System for tape recorders and VCRs" and thought it was worth a shot.

Hi, Elvis.

I don't mean to divert the attention away from your search but is that information something you share openly? My Craig works pretty good with the exception of the cassette deck. I once opened it and the belts had all disintegrated. If you have a source and list of sizes for the belts I'd love to have the information. Schematics would be nice too - My left front channel drops from time to time and I'm not sure if it's wiring, the radio, or the speaker.

Cheers

If you strike out on the belts, a lot of the repair shops have, or will sell, kits with several widths that you cut to length and glue together. I made one for my GTO years ago and it is still working.

If you don't know if it's the speaker or ther wiring or very simple - the connectors - well, then check them.

If it's still there then check or resolder the solder joints of the amplifiers.

The belts are 86 to 89mm inner diameter and 1.2mm * 1.2mm.

There are dealers on ebay, just search for them, it's way easier then finding a datasheet for that chip.

Yes, as far as the intermitant speaker - I haven't even tried the simple stuff yet. Guess I'm lazy.

Thanks for the information on the belts.
If off to EBay...

Anyone find the spec sheet? I have a Craig on the bench with the exact same problem. It is playing WAY too fast..

6486064859

Based on the schematics, I am guessing that pin 1 is some kind of feedback so the speed regulator knows how fast the motor is turning. The voltage at pin 6 seems too low.

Anyone find the spec sheet?
https://www.nteinc.com/specs/1300to1399/pdf/nte1300.pdf

It's an equivalent IC. It doesn't tell much about how it works so if anybody has an original DS for CX-065, I'd also appreciate sharing it.

Less than 0.7V and still too fast? Then I'd guess the Q351 is fried open or a mica washer is missing under it.

That was it.. The mica washer fell out..

I'll keep an eye out for the spec sheet. As Elvis said, it was a pretty common part in the early 1980's.. I am surprised there is not more information on it.

Spoke too soon.. Was playing for about 5 min, then stopped all together..

Going to test that transistor again...

Of course, it was right as I clicked "order" on my Mouser window <sigh>.

The electrolytic caps around the CX-065 are usually the reason. Fighting with mine at the moment, almost same issue. I'll let you know what was the cause.

Yeah, noticing the voltage at pin 2 of the CX065 changes as the motor stops/starts- to bad I have no clue what that pin is for LOL.

Voltage at pin 6 goes to zero when the motor stops, but that is more likely the symptom and not the cause.

M51725L looks like it may be an X-REF for the CX065.. But not coming up with datasheet for that either..

In my case, replacing the C353 solved the problem permanently. The circuit seems to be very sensitive to any change in C353 capacitance so you'll probably have to readjust the motor speed with R351.
