For all the newbies (and all the others who need to update their listing) everyone should go over to the DoD to register their car. The URL is citizenkidd.com/dmc/pages/dod.asp It is no longer at DMCNEWS.
Keeping the DoD up to date helps all of the owners by keeping track of all Deloreans and is used for statistical analysis for production figures, options, and running changes. It would be great if we could all review out listings and have it all brought up to date for DCS 2014.

Hmm, I don't mind having some of that info filled in, but I don't think I want random people to be able to look up my VIN and find the exact address I keep it parked at.... I just don't have that much faith in humanity.

It just lists City/State with a contact number (if provided). It is only issued to folks that have already signed up, not just random people.

Nothing, I presume.

They could just provide a valid VIN and they're IN. :tongue_stick:

It doesn't even have to be a valid vin. You can make one up, all you need are the last 4-5 digits. There is a check box if you do not want your info public. You do not have to include a street address or even the Town if you are that worried. If someone wants to find you that bad they will search the DMV records. In today's world it is hard to keep anything secret.

I guess I'm not sure how much checking Thomas does on a new entry. I assume that if it is a vin that falls within the known ranges he would just accept it.

If someone in MO claims a VIN last seen in Germany, say, he may double check. Same of the owner says his vin is 8432 or 68432

I think this is a wonderful resource and I would hope that every Delorean owner makes use of it. The contact information is great, I traced my car all the way back to 1999 with PO information. I am glad this was available. I do have faith in humanity Devon! I would hope you just put in your vin and it's province at the very least.

Hello DMCTALKers,

My name is Thomas Kidd, and I am the current keeper of the DOD. I’ll address a few of the questions/concerns mentioned here.

Our Texas club agreed to take over maintenance of the DOD, when it needed a new home a few years ago. I/we tried to keep the original spirit in tact, while adding a few modernizations along the way. Currently, owners submits their information and consent. Their email address provided is verified. If no email is provided (or a bad email address), the entry deleted. If the information submitted seems reasonable and the email address is verified, we accept it based on the honor system, and so yes, the DOD is made up of entirely user submissions. So far, there has been no known abuse.

I try to check for and respond to new updates at least every few days. But since I can’t always check every day, I appreciate the patience of those who do contribute their information, There may be a slight delay in getting your submission activated (an entry is never printed in the DOD until it has been activated).

I receive no compensation of any kind for maintaining the DOD. When it was mentioned to me about taking over maintenance of the DOD, I accepted because I thought in some small way I would be giving something back to the DeLorean community, since I have been so lucky to be apart of this group, and have received great advice and counsel from them (in no small part via DMCTalk).

I have been doing an average of two publications a year, generally in May and November. If you enter information, and it is verified and activated, it should appear in the next publication. You can email me directly for corrections, questions or concerns. Or, you can make most corrections yourself online, or remove your data at any time you want.

Now I’ll try to answer some concerns.

I did this a while back. Looks like the PDF hasn't been updated since May of this year. My VIN still shows the PO's info.

The DOD is a separate collection of data from the VIN Registry. The DOD is self maintained by its members, and the publication is only periodically published, per above.

Hmm, I don't mind having some of that info filled in, but I don't think I want random people to be able to look up my VIN and find the exact address I keep it parked at.... I just don't have that much faith in humanity.

A valid concern. To join the DOD, you do not have to supply your address. However, you must consent to have (some) of the information you do provide included in the printed document. And the resulting printed document is intended to be released only to its own members.

Here is a sample of what the DOD provides, using my own data:

22797

In today's world it is hard to keep anything secret.

It is true you could submit a valid VIN that is not yours, or even an invalid VIN that you make up. But, some reasonable checking is done. Admittedly it is still possible bogus data can get in. That’s where we rely on the Chronology to verify. Yes, we are currently on the honor system, but could at any time tighten up data entry by doing specific VIN verifications if need be.

I guess I'm not sure how much checking Thomas does on a new entry. I assume that if it is a vin that falls within the known ranges he would just accept it.

If someone in MO claims a VIN last seen in Germany, say, he may double check. Same of the owner says his vin is 8432 or 68432

As said, I do “reasonable” checking, just as you alluded to. If a VIN is outside the reasonable range, it will not be accepted. If it is within reasonable, but other information doesn’t make sense, I will contact the submitter and question him/her. In some cases, I will (and have) asked for a VIN photo, to prove the submitter owns (or has access at least) to the car in question.

-----------------------------

I’m sorry for the late reply to this thread. I did not see it until the morning of 10/31/2013. Since this thread started, there have been 10 new submissions. All are valid VINs, but only six provided email return addresses, which will be verified. The remaining four will be deleted, since they did not provide an email address, and so I have no way to contact the submitter.

Again, anyone can contact me at any time, either here on DMCTalk, or at my email address, which can be obtained from the DOD pages.

With that said, I extend a Thank You to all those who participate in the new DOD.

Thomas

I'd like to provide some input on this (I've been away a few months so I apologize on the glut of random thread replies.)

I think there should be a public version of this directory that one can review prior to providing their own info. There was in the past and I don't see why that should change. Admittedly the previous version was based on good research (they had proper info on my car without contacting me). I don't expect anyone to do this level of research themselves, its rather time consuming.

That said, some may be leery to provide info blindly without knowing where it is going. This might result in 2 versions based on the current iteration but it may help with buy in.

There is a public version of basic car chronology already. You don't have to be a member of the DOD to see it. But as for the DOD, how do we display the member's only information in a "review prior to providing their own info." without compromising our strict rule of not disclosing personal information to non-members?

Here is what we adhere to:
As in the past, the Directory is not released to the general public, or even the general DeLorean community. One must be a DOD member, validated with a legitimate email address, and in active status to obtain the unlock code for the current DOD list.
Probably I don't understand what part(s) of the directory you would like to see before submitting your own information. Could you please explain further? I/we are always open to making the directory better for those who choose to participate.

Admittedly the previous version was based on good research (they had proper info on my car without contacting me).

The new DOD is maintained by the owner's themselves, not by research by us. All information from the previous keeper was brought forward, so your information should be correct if you were a member (I see after checking that you are not currently a DOD member).

That said, some may be leery to provide info blindly without knowing where it is going.

As said, the DOD is released only to members. To be a member, you must submit your information, and agree to it being included in the DOD publication.

This might result in 2 versions based on the current iteration but it may help with buy in.

Are you perhaps thinking of the VIN Chronology (different from the DOD)?

Thanks for your input, whatever you decide to do.

The planned November publication of the DeLorean Owners Directory (DOD) is due out shortly. Owners of two cars have submitted information to be included, and the information appears legitimate. But for some reason, the owners have not responded to several email requests for verification. I'd like to give these owners every opportunity to be included in this next publication, so I am asking them here to respond.

The two VINs are 726 and 791.

If you are one of the owners of these two cars, please check your email and respond.

Thanks.

When Shannon contacted me last year I provided information on my VIN, but given your post I thought I'd join up and see if there was additional information I could update/provide.

No such verification e-mail has yet arrived.

Suggests something could be amiss with the process given you're saying you have multiple instances of others not getting back to you either.

(Btw - the two VINs listed below in your original posting are not mine)
I'd like to enter several DeLoreans, but I have no access to the DOD.
Please advise.

No such verification e-mail has yet arrived.

Took a few hours but it finally arrived.

Delay definitely not my end - I run my own infrastructure and e-mails arrive within seconds, not even minutes let alone hours...

I've finally managed to locate my password single-handedly, so now I have updated the info on my first DeLorean VIN # 06759.

Still, there seems to be a big technical problem in updating other VINs:

1. The system won't let me add a VIN that's already there in the directory, event though I'm the new owner.

2. The system asks me to update instead of adding a new DeLorean. When I try to do that, I can only update info on VIN # 06759, not another VIN, and I can only use the password connected to VIN # 06759.

3. It seems IMPOSSIBLE to update the registry with another VIN that's already there (change of ownership)

Please advise.

The VIN chronology that Shannon maintains is different from the DOD that I maintain. They are two separate animals. Yes, we communicate, but it is not always instantaneous (depends on if we're at our respective computers, or not).

Nothing is amiss. There is a delay because I don't always check the web-site every day for new entries. I do the best I can, but I have a family and a full time job, so monitoring the DOD site I do in my spare time.

Only one other owner has not replied. And he still has not, even after about a week, and four emails. Am I to trust he has provided the correct email address (A rhetorical question, no need to answer).

After you enter data for one car, you will only receive one email, which is a request for verification. This is what validates your email address. After you reply, your status will be activated (after a delay) and you will be able to retrieve the DOD publication unlock password. You do not receive a second email after verification, as there really is no need. On the off chance that something is wrong, I'll contact you directly for corrections.

You can enter as may cars as you want/need to. You'll get one email for each VIN. You have access to the DOD after your first VIN is verified and activated.

Chris,

Sorry for the delay. It is on our end. This is not an automated system, so you won't get a verification email until I check for updates. Usually once per day, but depending on demand, maybe not that often.

Yes, it's an area being considered for automation.

Stian,

You said you were able to locate your password and update the information on 6759. That's great.

To address your other concerns:

1. The system does not let you add a VIN that's already there. If you think about it, that's a safety feature, and is by design, and is not a "big technical problem". The system has no way of knowing you are the new owner. I'll be happy to reset the password for you, and send it to you, or clear the entry entirely, so you can be free to enter your new owner information. Let me know please.

2. Why would you want to update information for a different VIN under 6759??? You update the information for another VIN under THAT VIN only. You do not use the password for 6759 on another VIN. Each VIN should have it's own password. That said, if you want to make all of your VINs have the same password, that's up to you. Like on #1 above, if the entry for the new VIN is already in the system, we'll need to either provide it to you, or clear it so you can re-enter your new information. Let me know please.

3. It is not at all impossible to update another VIN that is already there. All you need is the password. I realize you don't have it, so just send me the VIN and I'll clear the entry for you, or reset the password, as above.

Sorry you've had so many problems, it's really not that bad....Let me know how I can help, per above.

Hi Thomas, and thanks for your efforts. I really appreciate it.

Now;
I understand that the system won't let me add a VIN that's already there, but I've only used the password for # 06759 to update my address, and lo behold, after that I was now able to enter my other VINs and delete the previous owners contact info and enter my own instead. So far so good.

I never received any new passwords for the VINs I wanted to edit like you say.
Another strange thing is this; one moment I get the error message that the VIN in question isn't active, some hrs/minutes later it is active?!
I guess there's a lag when it comes to updating perhaps (?)

Now, all VINs are accounted for, except one: VIN # 7067. It says it's not active. Can you activate that so I can update the info?

Also, I'm curious as to WHERE I can update the "coffee/workspace/tools" etc. for each VIN. I can only edit the contact info (name and address) for each car.
Please advise.

Stain,

I'm glad it's working for you. The lag happens because after you respond to my verification request, I must then go in and change your status to "Active". This is the additional safety.

Please look for an email from me regarding your multiple VINs.

Thanks.

The owners of VINs 726 and 2491 have submitted information to the DOD, but have been unreachable either by the email address or the telephone numbers they've provided. I've made numerous attempts. If anyone on Talk knows either of these two persons, maybe you could get a message to them, and ask them to contact me, either here or by email.

I'd like to give them every chance I can to be included in this month's edition of the DOD, but if I can't verify their information, they'll have to re-submit for the following publication, which is probably in May 2014.

Thanks to anyone that can help.
