Steering column question : is a bushing missing?

Another problem. I had a loose on my steering column and I saw something wrong at the firewall. Pix included. I think a bushing is completely missing am I right? If yes will I have to undo steering Wheel and everything upward that bushing to put it in place???

Yeah, you are missing your steering column bushing. It is a 1 to 2 hour job to replace. I'll look around my computer to see if I can find my notes on it.

It was a bit too much for me to do on my own, so I had a local shop do it. It makes a world of difference, the steering feels like night and day with the new bushing in.

Definitely missing a bushing as Mike stated. It isn't too terrible of a job, just have to remove the column to get at it. Lube up the bushing and tap it in, then put the column back in. Your steering will feel much better! My car was missing the bushing as well.

Yeah those take some pressure when the column is used at top or bottom level adjustment. When the pushing becomes hard over the years it pops out by its self.

It's not too bad of a job. I went with Toby's Delrin bushing and it's great. I did an entry on my blog here:

Getting it in place is pretty easy with a 3/4" socket, a long extension, and a small sledge with a dab of grease on the bushing itself.
