Hi, I'm new around these parts. My D has been stored in my grandad's barn for the past half decade. I'm just starting the process of reviving it. I'm friends with Jeremiah (DeLorean03) who helped me get it started plus a few other things that needed done. As soon as we get the basics covered, I'll be shipping it to Eddie (82DMC-12) who will be putting electronic fuel injection on. Here are a few photos right after taking the old girl out of the barn and getting her transported to my house. Yes, that is straw clinging to the back tire. :yesss:

Other than EFI, do you plan on any other modifications?
Welcome to the forum.
Keep us update of your future plan on your car :)

Other than EFI, it just needs a lot of TLC, including a lot of the cosmetic stuff. I plan to keep it fairly "stock" except for the EFI, so no major changes planned.

Welcome to the board! Cool story about the car and glad to hear your restoration is in process. It sounds like you've owned the car for a while then? I'm interested to hear more about you and your journey with the car so far.

From the pictures, the only cosmetic issue that I can see is the passenger side fender appears to be somewhat overly flared out at the bottom front of the wheel arch, but definitely appears to be repairable.
The fascia paint, at least what we can see of it, looks 'solid' - maybe just a buff and a wax. Wheel finish looks great. Stainless looks fine, but you may want to go over the entire car with scotch-brite pads (I did this upon first buying my car 12 years ago and probably should again in the near future). Other than those few things, probably just needs a really good wash/detail job.
Definitely a nice example to start with and the fact that it's been in the family for quite some time makes it all that much better!
Hope to see/meet you and your car at DCS this year :)
BTW - FYI, there's another owner's forum - www.DMCToday.com

Thanks! There are a few issues that aren't obvious from the photos... the paint on the front fascia has completely peeled on the top, flat horizontal part. Also have some paint cracking on the rear louvers, and the A-arms need re-covered. First it looks like I'm gonna be working on the deferred mechanical maintenance issues, though... Today I discovered the windshield wipers don't work. They made a weird electrical-motor type noise, then silence. Never moved. Fans don't come on either, for which I bought a new otterstat. Jeremiah is probably coming over this week to help with a few things before it goes to Florida.
I brought the car with me from California. PO was Clives Gilton who owns/owned Don-a-Vee Jeep in the L.A. area.
Since I live in the Dayton area, I'm trying to get it ready for the show this summer :)

So, now that I am home from work, I can give some details here.
Jessica and I first saw 10480 on Saturday the 9th. Overall, most things are cosmetic. I feel that there's some tuning up to do, but for the most part, it really shouldn't take too much to get 10480 back on the road. There's just a lot of "make sure this works ad that works" to do before it gets back on the road, and with the first snow falling here tonight/today - well - guess we have plenty of time for that.
There's a good amount of cosmetic work to be done. I didn't get a chance to test out all the lights, switches, accessories, and all that other kind of stuff. We'll get there with time. Shouldn't be too bad/difficult of a restoration. Eddie's taking out the difficult part, no more KJet to worry about.
This car shows signs of being loved at a time when things were not so hectic for Sherry. Clearly, there's the SS coolant bottle, the relay kit, the RPM relay, and a new fuel pump had all been installed before I got there. Best way to say it - some things are way more important than a car, and I fully understand why it had to be into storage. Won't be hard to get back on its feet - especially with all the owners and resources we have both here and in the local area.
Here's a couple photos I took that day. They all come from my FB page:

We installed some new high pressure fuel lines as well as fuel injection clamps. The previous person who worked on this car installed fuel hoses with NO FUEL CLAMPS. (/)_-)
22995
All ready to go! Before the new hoses were installed, we did a thorough fuel system flush.
22996
New battery and battery bolts
22997
Got the engine ready to prime the air plenum with drops of fuel to help get the engine idling.

I donated my old door and louvre struts to 10480. Made working on the car a lot easier, and I truly feel it's one of those "psychological" boosts to see the doors open.

Fuel only, or ignition control as well?
SEO Motorsports
12-11-2013, 10:00 PM
Fuel only but I am taking over idle control so I can control it when lights and AC kicks in. Ignition control gains you nothing for the effort unless you plan to boost one of these.
I made the final modifications to the Bosch injectors I finally selected. These sit in the original injector hole and have an extended tip so the fuel is sprayed into the intake properly.

The only thing holding me from driving this car is the custom injector adapters; the machine shop was not able to get them done before the Christmas break. I also plan to cover the engine and wash the engine bay to make it look a little better; It's amazing what soap, water and a scrub brush will do.

Ed, I'm so ready for this in January. You know I'm just a convenience guy and love this package, as I intend to use the original engine also, but want the modern reliability. When it's my turn and room is avail Im there!
So quick run down , what all does this setup eliminate the need for from the original ?
For example, no more CPR/WUR, accumulator? etc..
Sorry if its already been said...just send the link.
Thanks.

Most of the K-jet gets modified or removed. I try to maintain a stock like look but eliminate the problematic hardware or components within some of the K-jet hardware. Warm-up regulator and cold start valve goes or is inactive. I also take over the idle valve with the MS EFI. I leave the accumulator as it really does not cause issues but it does help provide a more stable fuel pressure as the batch fired injectors open and close.

So that's 4 DeLoreans now you've got going or are planning on doing: 2 EFI'd, one a EFI/turbo job, and 1 full engine swap.
Love seeing you do all these different setups, Eddie. Shows a lot of versatility and options - not just the "least" expensive and "most" expen$ive.

I think Randy may want to keep it non turbo and just go EFI, we'll see. I stopped by and saw Samuel's car yesterday and the car is mechanically in good shape other than a gummed up K-jet. So a EFI and turbo upgrade will be a nice change. Who would have though, a car that can get out of its own way!

So you keep the FD for your EFI setup rather than the common rail look. How/where do regulate fuel pressure? Is the FD for all practical purposes an empty chamber distribution point with no functionality.

Today I put Sherry's car up on the lift to do an inspection of the brakes and clutch system. The driving brakes looked fine but I found that one of the pads for the emergency brake is missing so we'll replace that and the E-brake should work again. I also found that the clutch system looked fine and was not leaking, it also had a stainless line already installed so that was good to see. I did forget to look at the coolant tank hose when we were replacing the water pump and it needs to be replaced for sure. Dave should be sending parts this week and we'll take care of those issues. I did find the fuse box needing to be replaced as a reliability factor, but the car will probably be fine for a bit as is it now.
I fixed the hanging side skirt and washed the car and engine bay and I must say its starting to look like a nice car after years of sitting.

It was a little cooler in Florida today so I was slow to get to the shop but I got some work done on Sherry's car. I got the MS mounted and the wire harness running out to the engine and left the wires for power, Tacho, fuel pump, and O2 inside. I also ran a new power wire for the injectors inside to be hooked up. I got everything in the engine bay wired and ready to go. Tomorrow the plan is to finish the last bit of wiring inside and then it's ready to go once I get the plug wired and injector adapters in. I expect to have the injector adapters by the end of next week and I believe the plug wires should show up too.
I did find one of the rear shocks leaked oil on the floor so it now needs to be replaced, I'm wondering if it was the temperature change. I think Jeremiah has a deal for Sherry for some new shocks so that should work out.

Hey Jonathan.
Good to meet you - thanks for signing onto the forums and jumping aboard!
Eddie is easily taking out the most finicky part of the car. My understanding is most things from there are cosmetic and detailing oriented.
Chris Nicholson can work his usual amazing magic on the passenger front quarter panel. I am pretty sure he'll be at DCS 2014, and with Sherry being local - she'll be able to get her work done by him very quickly. The panel is not hard to take off at all, and we can get it right back on way early in the show!

I spent the last few evenings dialing in the cold start/warm up tables and I believe I have them dialed in perfectly. unfortunately while I was driving around the other day the bearing for the AC idler pulley failed and fell off the engine. I found the pulley and it was toast! I told Sherry she should plan to replace all three as the other two may follow. unfortunately the car has a audible exhaust leak on the passengers side that I'm hoping could be the crossover pipe gasket and not the manifold gaskets as we all know how those can be when replacing. Other than those two issues the engine runs like a dream from cold start, cruising to full throttle down the highway.

I continue to refine the tune on Sherry's car each cold morning or evening I can get. 50F is the coldest I have had. I with it were at least down in the 30's. One issue I am fighting with is the car has a bad exhaust leak on the passengers side. I found one stud completely missing and could feel the leak with my hand. This causes bad air fuel reading as it can pull in fresh air through that leak. when the engine is warmed up it's not as bad but I can really tell when you start it up stone cold. I have it to where it will start right up and warm up but it's not as good as it should be.

Tonight I finished pulling the passengers side intake manifold from Sherry's car and found that the gaskets had been replaced in the past but the broken studs where never fixed or did they have the manifold resurfaced. I found the exact same studs broken as what Samuel had on his car along with the manifold being pitted just as bad. The manifold will be at the machine shop tomorrow and I should have it back on Monday at the latest. I was able to get the surfaces on the head cleaned up and the new studs installed.

Wow, that's pretty bad that someone would go through the effort of pulling the manifolds but then not bother to surface them or replace the studs. Wow.

Right, what a waste of time and money. But it is hard to get those studs out!

I just had both sides done on my car and every stud broke. I've had to drill out broken studs before and it was always a PITA, but the guy I brought it to seemed unfazed by it so I asked how he removes them.
For almost all broken studs, he uses a welder to zap a bolt onto the end of the stud that's broken off in the head. I was a battalion welder in the US Army for 4 years and not sure I'd be comfortable trying that one, I'd be concerned about the aluminum head. Sounds like he's done it a zillion times, he's really comfortable with it.
Anyone else hear of that technique?

Not sure I'd go that route. I tend to like the easy out tools to remove bolts.

That can be done if the studs is close to the edge or protruding from the head. In the case of both Sam and Sherry's cars the studs were broken about 1/8" in the head.

Depending on the broken bolt, We use this method about 80% of the time in the machine shop I work in. If it won't come out, it usually ends up on my mill for me to drill out/extract.
In my 33 years as a machinist, I've seen some Doozies.

Easy outs do work but, care is needed when drilling the pilot hole and applying the torque.
Too many times I've had to use a carbide endmill too remove, a broken easy out and the small piece of broken drill under that.
Then I have too remove the rest of the the bolt/stud.
I've done this on on threads from 1/4" to over 1 1/2".

The machine shop was able to get the manifold milled on Friday so I was able to get Sherry's car all back together yesterday including replacing her rear shocks. The car sounds great and good thing we fixed the leak because the AFRs were notably off. I spend some time last night tuning and got it running much better. It's amazing how quiet the engine is without the exhaust leak. I drove the car to work today to give the EFI system a good long test on the highway and had zero issues. I'm still fine tuning the cold start and warm up tables but the car should be ready to go by Friday.

Great stuff, Eddie. You are making some awesome progress with all 3 DeLoreans. Can't wait to show off your work at DCS.

Thanks! I forgot to upload the pic of the resurfaced manifold.

What did you use to clean the surfaces of the heads?

Are those "frost plugs" in the head? Is it a good idea to change them out while you can get
at them easily?

Yes., they are. Generally get changed when the head is removed. I've never seen one rust through but they could. Of course if that happens you typically have much bigger fish to fry, so the heads coming off anyway.
