I have been having issues with my second gear since I bought the car in 2009. I have not driven the car much (garage queen ) so I really haven't been able to pin-point the symptoms until now.
When the car is cold, the gears grind shifting from 1 to 2, or 3 to 2. The gear shift also jumps out of second frequently when the car is cold.
When the car warms up, I seem to have no issues.
I changed the gear oil to the recommended spec when I got the car (400 miles ago). I have replaced shift pins and bushings, and re-lubricated.
Originally I thought roll pin was the issue, but I don't think so since it is fine when warm.
Ideas?
thanks
John

Still sounds like a bent roll pin to me. If you did all of the external things, (and it sounds like you did) and you still have a problem with 2nd gear, there are not a lot of possibilities left.

Tear apart the tranny for a 59cent pin....I was afraid of that

If I have tough shifts from 1st 2nd and grinding downshifting from 4th to 3rd, what does that mean?

It means you have to rule out a lot of possibilities. Do you have the correct type and amount of oil in the transmission? Have you gone over the linkage for worn parts, adjustments and lubrication? Are you leaking brake fluid from the master or slave? Do you still have the plastic hose? Get all of the simple, easy stuff done and if that doesn't cure it then you probably do have "Bent Roll Pin Syndrome". BTW it isn't "just" a 59 cent pin. Before you are done you are also probably doing a clutch, some gaskets, output seals, C/V boots, and who know what else you will find. Do not take lightly pulling the transmission because the "while you are in there" mentality will take over and a big job will expand even bigger.

I have the same 3rd gear issue with my car now. When the car is cold, I can shift as quick as I want, (Up or Down), into 3rd and all is well.
Once the car is Fully warmed up, I have to Slowly upshift into 3rd and Double clutch down from 4th to avoid grinding the gears.
All other gears are fine anytime.
As for my transmission, DMCF did it's last servicing.

Wear on the sliding gear teeth and/or synchro blocking rings. Means a prior owner went too long with the plastic clutch hose.

How would a warm transmission mask the bent 2nd gear roll pin problem?

As the gear oil warms up and gets thinner it will tend to shift a little easier. A lot depends on your driving technique, your local climate, and just how bad the pin is. You may also not have the correct gear oil in the transmission or not enough. That can have a big effect too.

A sheared 2nd gear roll pin should have no impact on 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear so it's got to be something else. The 2nd gear pin is sheared in my trans and the only symptom I notice is 'mushy' downshifts from 3rd to 2nd that lacks a positive feel when entering 2nd gear. Shifts from 1st to 2nd feel pretty normal.
What type of gear oil did you use when you last changed it? I think the general recommendation for conventional is 80W-90 and synthetic typcally comes in 75W-90. If you use the redline synthetic it has to be the NON limited slip differential variety. If you get the limited slip diff oil it causes issues with the synchros engaging correctly from what I've read.

I think my issue is being confused due to threadjacking....I only have problems going into 2nd (from first or third)
I used regular 80w90, no synthetic
