I am hoping that maybe DMCH James comes by this thread. I am seriously considering having my D converted to all-electric. I am looking at the videos from back in 2011 when DMCH unveiled their electric prototype, but am having a hard time figuring out what parts are used in there. I can figure out specific batteries, motor controller, etc, but am trying to figure out what is being used as a transmission. The official specs only say "Single speed fixed gear. Reverse drive uses reverse direction of motor, limited to 15 mph." Is there any detailed information on what type of transmission set up is being used? I have an automatic trans in my D right now and know from research that they are a pain in the ass to convert to electric drive.

If whoever has the answers doesn't want to make them public, then by all means please send me a PM. I like the idea of having a simple transmission solution instead of retrofitting my auto trans.

And while we're at it, could I get details on the ratings for the batteries (total voltage, amp-hours rating, etc)?

I am trying to get together a parts list to see if I can afford a conversion right now. Since DMC is slow to get their solution out the door, I will have to take it to a third-party EV shop.

It's unlikely they will release that detailed amount of specs, especially if you plan on not purchasing from them. They are using a 3rd party to do the EV Conversion.

As for the transmission, it is likely to be similar to the Leaf and Tesla EVs where it's simply a reduction gear that engages park, neutral and drive. The problem with using an Auto Trans on an electric motor is the need to keep spinning the Torque converter or have a few seconds lag when taking off for the Motor to start and build up pressure for the torque converter. So if anything, would be better to use a Manual for that.

For the battery, like the Leaf and Teslas; they use Lithium Ion batteries and stack them up. I believe the Leaf is around 400V, I have no idea on the A/hr rating. I think I read somewhere DMCH plans to use Lead Acid? I know with the Lead, the battery pack is a bit complex where it has a bunch of cells grouped together then grouped again that all have sensors to monitor temp, charge, etc.

If you are doing an EV Conversion, do keep in mind you will need a new A/C Compressor, Heater, modified brake system, very updated electrical body electrical system and more. So it kinda makes sense why it's taking some time. I work at Nissan and it took some development time for the Leaf, that is still on-going improvements, so it is by no means an easy task.

and I would love to have DMC do my conversion if they offered that. But I don't know if they will even offer conversions or if they will just stick to new builds.

Many electric conversions do not use a transmission at all. Since what is in the Delorean is more correctly called a transaxle, it is also the differential, with some machine shop work you could make up adapters to mount the electric motor. The "magic" in the conversion is the controller. It monitors the batteries and can also recharge them in regenerative mode. If you decide to go AC the controller also converts the DC to AC and back again for regen. A pure electric car is very impractical because of the limited range and the long recharge times. A hybrid makes more sense right now with the way the battery technology currently exists. In fact, with the efficiency obtainable with hybrid technology, you could have even greater range than EITHER just batteries OR an IC motor. And greater fuel economy.

There is no trans in the prototype, just a Diff coupled to the motor. a ford 8.8 maybe?
