Trying to pull transmission, wont detach from the output shaft

Hi all,

Trying to pull the 5-Speed off my car. Ive followed the directions on the searchable shop manual as best I can tell, but the trans will slide off the output shaft of the motor for the life of me!

-All 4 bolts around the bell housing are out.
-the Shift linkage is apart and off the trans
-Took the two bolts out of the slave cylinder
-Pulled the E-Brake cable out of the way from the passenger side
-Pulled the two mounts for the trans

I have a small gap on the passenger side of the bellhousing, but the drivers won't budge to speak of. Trying to wiggle the trans just moves the motor (motor mounts may be tired).

Any thoughts?

Did you unbolt the starter? Also, check the other side - there might be plate with an unused sensor that will snag the flywheel. If you have a stock exhaust, the catalytic converter is right in the way. Take it off with creative use of a bunch of socket extensions and swivel joints.

I say "might be" because it's not used in the DeLorean, so if the gearbox has been out before, the last person could have just binned it. It sounds like yours is still there.

You didn't mention the two sheet metal panels that trap the flywheel to the transmission. They are not mentioned in the manual either.

Got the flywheel plate on the drivers side of the ca- the meg ethic sensor referenced in the manual?

I unbolted but didn't remove the starter (I didn't plan to do an oil change today!)

It looks like there is a gap all the way around the tranny, 3/4" around the top, half an inch on the bottom drivers side, 1/8" on the passenger side. I can feel flywheel teeth.

Dave, where are the sheets you mentioned?

On the plus side, I found my car has Toby TABs today while I didn't accomplish anything other than making a mess... Score!

so the sensor attached to that small protecting plate on the right hand side is inactive?
If so, does that plate need to go back on? or can it be left off like the flywheel plate since the engine is opposite it's original intent (In the back)

Yes the pick-up is inactive.

Technically the plate does not need to be reinstalled. If this were a Front engine application you would want it to help avoid catching debris. There are 3 plates (Left, right, Bottom). Typically you can tell if a car has had trans/clutch work done in the past because the bottom one is usually left off upon reinstallation of the transmission. I removed the Diagnostic plug after the last time I had my transmission out. One less item to clutter the engine compartment. I did, however, reinstall the plate just for the shits of it. It's pretty easy for me to take on and off with a 10MM gear wrench, since I have Headers.

The one with the sensor and one at the very bottom of the bellhousing. The 4 bolts face the rear of the car and will hit the frame as you take them out.

For the bolts at the bottom of the bell housing (flywheel) plate, I loosened them as far as they would go (until they hit the frame) then punched them out with a screwdriver and hammer (help/directions came from Dave) :smile:

That damn sensor plate was the one thing I disliked during the trans removal and install. I didn't remove the cat and used a crows foot wrench held with my fingers to remove those 2 bolts. Nice to know once I upgrade my exhaust they are accessible.

I got it with a friend below the car holding his finger over the bolt while I turned 1/16th at a time, and alot of swearing. Its good to know it isn't necessary

DMCMW Dave is our winner today, the bottom flywheel plate was the wrench in the works. You all rock!
