View Full Version : What is the Fastest / Highest HP DeLorean?

While I know the DeLorean is not a race car or dyno queen, but is there any record for the highest HP and/or fastest DeLorean quarter mile? Both PRV and engine swaps?
I have seen the video of the 2JZ powered DeLorean do what I heard was a 12.4?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWAsiKXP8oA
The Buick turbo V6 car states it's the fastest and that it makes 573HP???
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BadAWoPyx48
Martin has a 260HP PRV (2.5L)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViF3YfNqkfM
I am seeking actual information, not questioning whether people care or not.

I'll get in touch with Eddie (2JZ builder) about it. I know what the video shows, but that was early days of 2JZ too. I remember him telling me he got in the 11's at one point.

My friend Cineman has the biturbo Prv from the Renault Safrane on his Delorean and this engine has 268 hp fro factory, so he probably has the fastest Prv Delorean (at the present time)...

W , not questioning whether people care or not.
That's an odd statement to make on here? Of course we care.
I assume that you mean "operational car". Until Chris posted that FB reference to the V6Buick car being at a new location, I'm not sure that this car would have counted as it didn't seem to be fully operational.
There are also a couple of other Chevy engined cars, but few are actually running.
I would guess that Cineman's car is the highest HP PRV, unless the Stage III DMCH car is more.
Your car, Nathan, is probably the highest HP (outside of the Buick one above). What is it rated at?

I read that last night and thought maybe it was a lost in translation type thing and CARE = OPINION? Like the actual facts/data reference perhaps?

The DMC Texas Stage III car made what, 155hp on the chassis dyno? Accounting for standardized drivetrain loss, that means the engine still most likely makes about 200 hp at the flywheel. Which is what the Stage II cars were supposed to make in the first place. But I digress...
The LS2 engine in Nathan's car would make 400hp/400ft-lb torque at the flywheel. I'm pretty sure Eddie's Supra engined DeLorean made significantly more hp at the wheels than that. Still, the small block v8 conversions are the stuff of my personal dreams!

Eddie's 2JZ car had 392ish HP at the wheels and about 368 ft/lbs of torque. Don't know how much he tweaked it after that.

Now I read this again it did come across with the wrong tone. I'm sorry. What I meant to say was that I wanted this post to be about actual data, not debating the swaps themselves or guesses on figures. My bad. There's good info already, keep it coming! T

Robert's Lotus V8 engine swapped DeLorean has a 3.5L type 918 twin-turbo producing approximately 500bhp.
Cadillac 4.6L Northstar V8 engine swapped DeLorean's have around 300bhp in stock form, while turbocharging them (not aware of any in existence on a DeLorean) will easily push that north of 500bhp.
There's also the dual engined DeLorean that had a Honda 2.0L I4 in the rear and a Cadillac 500 CID (8.2L) V8 in the front. According to the owner, it achieved a top end speed of 150mph and ran a 9.422ET @ 71.21mph in an eighth mile pass.

I would say its either going to be Eddies 2JZ, Nathan's LS2, or Roberts lotus car. The Buick engine car in California is the source oba lot of talk and rumors but nothing substantial has been proven to my knowledge, other than what was shown on the episode of TUNED.
To my knowledge, the highest number we've ever been shown from a dyno was 392hp at the wheels from Eddie. As far as I'm concerned, without any other dyno sheets or videos, that's the best we have to go by. Everything else is just rumors and hearsay.

Well then, clearly Nathan and Nick have to get theirs to a dyno pronto!
wrt the "fastest car", would a track lap time not be more appropriate to this style of car (rather than 1/4 mile), where suspension/brake upgrades would play a bigger part than just raw HP. Though of course, that would be impossible to compare cars across the country/world.

I have to wonder about the 918 DeLorean putting out 500 HP. The stock 918 engine produces 350 BHP. Does anybody know what he has supposedly done to it to increase the HP that much?

Dyno time is coming up next week, but I am concerned about pushing it too hard and hurting the box before I get to enjoy the car. It might be a couple of months before I have anything to post here. Nick, how hard have you pushed your car?
I have found that drag times are a good way to compare globally. It's also another way to support the HP claim. If someone is claiming close to 600HP at the tires, but can't pull more than 100MPH, than their Dyno may be a little "happy"

Did you install a beefed up transmission coupler? That seems to be the weakest link when it comes to the DeLorean transmission.

There was a guy about a decade ago who put a carbureted Chevrolet small block 350 into his DeLorean, and his car would snap the stock couplers when he pushed it abnormally hard.

The dual (2) engine car and the Northstar swap cars are completely different cars. The 500 CID (8.2L) Cadillac V8 used by the dual engine car is a traditionally configured solid push rod / lifter 16V carburated engine. The 4.6L (281 CID) Cadillac Northstar V8 is a sophisticated DOHC 32V EFI engine. The two are separated by 22 years.
The dual engine car uses a 500 CID (8.2L) Cadillac V8 in the rear and a 2.0L Honda I4 engine in the front. It runs on either engine separately or both engines together. In stock configuration, the Cadillac 500 CID produced 400bhp and 550 lb/ft of torque.

The Northstar swap cars use the 4.6L (281 CID) Cadillac Northstar V8. In stock configuration, the Northstar V8 produces an average (between the many variations) 300bhp and 300 lb/ft of torque.

The Lotus V8 3.5L type 918 twin-turbo engine was originally developed/engineered by Lotus to produce 500bhp in stock configuration. It was de-tuned by Lotus to 350bhp in offered Esprit V8s to accommodate the fragility of the Renault UN1 transaxle that was used at the time. According to Tamir's website, Robert was quoted as having said:
"The transmission is Lotus, and it uses the same case as a DeLorean, with a Quaife Limited Slip Differential installed. Notice the two charge coolers straddling the transmission. Each turbo was reworked to add 40% more air flow, boosting the cars horsepower to approximately 500 Horses!"
Ilan is quoted as having said:
"Chipping out the car, very nice move Robert! Here are Lotus race chips which boost the HP from 350 to 450."

I think we are really looking at a number of different goals or end results for Quickest, Fastest and Most HP:
DeLorean with Most Horsepower = Most RWHP via Dyno Testing, with identical or similar dyno technologies
Quickest DeLorean @ 1/8 Mile = Lowest Time to 1/8 Mile (corrected for temp and other environmental factors)
Quickest DeLorean @ 1/4 Mile = Lowest Time to 1/4 Mile (corrected for temp and other environmental factors)
Fastest DeLorean @ Race Track = Highest Closed Circuit Speed (corrected for temp and other environmental factors)
Fastest DeLorean @ Salt Flats/Dry Lake Bed = Maximum High Speed (corrected for temp and other environmental factors)
(Substitute Metric equivilants for speed and distance, where necessary)

........and AFAIK neither one has been in running condition in a very long time. So - does it count if it "ran when parked"?

There also needs to be two separate categories for this: While I have great respect for those that do a tasteful swap it is no longer a true Delorean if it isn't rocking a v6 PRV
Worlds fast PRV Delorean
Worlds fastest engine swap Delorean

The last time I spoke to Rick G. (Twin Engine DeLorean), he was running primarily on the Honda engine, especially for long distances.
When he took me for a test drive, he would fire up the Caddy engine for short bursts of substantial extra speed and power only,
then shut the Caddy engine down and keep cruising on the Honda engine. Quite a beast and extremely raw ... a true custom car.

I agree, there definitely needs to be duplicate categories for PRV and non-PRV powered cars. I am just as keen on the PRV figures BTW.
I think the issue is the lack of actual data, but we can update the list when data is available.
All power figures need to be at the wheels, not engine. The figures need to be as measured, not factory figures or estimates....
Dyno graph, time slip or video - Or it didn't happen :p

No offense intended, but I do not agree with this. I think if you were to ask people, owners and non-owners, what makes a DeLorean a DeLorean, very few if any would say the fact that it has a PRV V6. Plus, I think a heavily modified PRV is not that different from an engine swap. It may have the same engine casting, but nothing else about its is original per say. Even the Stage III, which is essentially bolt on, is no longer even close to stock. Yea, an engine swap does change the car from some of its originality, more so than a stage III, but I'd hardly say it's not a true DeLorean anymore. Will.i.am's car is an example of not a true DeLorean anymore, and technically it still uses the frame and body.
Sorry, not trying to change the subject.

What if we compromise and switch with the baddest engine ever built? Renault 1.6 turbo. The 3m price tag shouldn't be considered a draw back. :)
Back on topic. I stick with what I tell everyone. No frame cutting, no fiberglass modifications working within the stock constraints and it is ok. I stick with the prv because its internal design was ahead of its time. Manufactures today are just now utilizing some of the late 70s Renault techniques.

I'm a huge booster of the PRV. It's an awesome engine, and damn reliable. However I'm just out of options with it. I need more power, and it just doesn't seem like anyone is really offering it for the PRV. Or at least not without requiring you ship the entire DMC-12 to their shop so that they can do the work. That's just not feasible for me. I would love to just be able to buy a kit, no matter how complicated even if it requires an engine tear-down, and just do the work myself. I absolutely would love to order up some forged pistons and turbos, or a supercharger that I could install myself. Even the Island Twin and BAE single kits in the 80's were made available for just such a task. But I can't get that now.
So for real power I'm only being left with an entire swap as an option. And if Ford ever gets around to releasing the 3.5L EcoBoost Control Pack, that will shoot to the top of my list. Now if some vendors are willing to release a competing package, I'll take that instead.

Funny you say this, HillBillyDMC (Casey) did just that. If you want info on this route, PM him here at the forums - or better yet - I'll let him know there's interest in what he did. He broke the engine down all the way to the small block, and then he rebuilt the whole thing with forged internal parts. He put in part orders to companies, and those companies built the parts he desired with the specs he gave them. He never turbo or supercharged it; he made it a high output PRV.

Without saying too much, Eddie has some things in mind for those who want these kinds of options. I am not going to steal his thunder, nor will I say "too much too soon" - but rest-assured, ideas are being thrown around, and if the VR6 thread is any indication, when he says he's going to do something - he gets what he wants to accomplish done.
This thread may get separated soon as we are starting to go :offtopic2:. No biggie, just letting everyone know to keep an eye out for a "new thread" if we keep discussing these ideas much more.
