Has anyone passivated their stainless exhaust rather than ceramic coating? We use this process at work to clean up welded stainless assemblies and prevent rusting like you see in that picture above. Stainless typically rusts after welding due to contamination in the heat affected zone and free iron. My basic understanding is that passivation is an acid pickling process that frees up all the contaminants and rebuilds a layer of oxide coating on the part. Here's an example of a freshly welded part on the left and a passivated part on the right.

I'm not sure if the high temps of the exhaust pipes would still cause passivated stainless to rust ... Does anyone know more about this process? I like the uniform matte finish of the parts, but if it won't last due to the heat then ceramic coating would be the better option.

That is a non-stainless exhaust with Jet Hot coating on it. And quite a few miles.

There are many different ways to passivate stainless; not all give that result though. Electro polishing is a method often used to passivate welded stainless. You can even passivate stainless with citric acid from lemons. We do this at Disney to our stainless handrails and use orange and lemon based juices because the juice is harmless to people. The acid creates a tiny oxide build up that protects the stainless; most times it doesn't look any different. I once passivate my driver side door using the citric acid method to see how well it would work and I believe it made the door less prone to finger prints; something I'd like to do to the rest of the car.

Also I think the only ceramic coated exhausts are the carbon steel ones. The stainless exhausts really have no need for it.

Originally that was the case. The Original mild steel systems were not coated with Jet Hot (ceramic coating) but rather some poor mans version of it. It did NOT hold hold up at all. DMCH eventually switched to Jet Hot. The results were much better. I have the Later version which was a re-coat from the original stuff. It's showing it's age now but is way better than that system previously posted. As for the SS systems not needing it, that's technically true. However system will turn dark brown over time. It won't do the Scaly rust thing though. So the benefit of ceramic coating the SS is more so for appearance in that the base material should not Bleed rust compromising the coating and thus should hold up for a long time. Time will tell.

Yea that is true. And technically as the system functions, over the years, some of the carbon from the exhaust bonds with the SS and still causes it to rust (though it takes a lot longer). That's the case with many of the original exhausts. If I recall correctly, the factory muffler was stainless steel, but you still see many rusted. People think stainless steel means stain-proof steel, but in reality it means stain-less steel, as in it just stains less than carbon steel.

I had a polished UK exhaust previously and it would brown over time. Once a year or so I would use stainless polish to knock it off and bring much of the silver back,

I give the choice and I believe about 90% of the systems we install here are ceramic coated stainless.

We have moved away from ceramics due to their short life. Owners who opt to use their cars see signs of decay after 10-15k in the finish. We now electroless nickel the majority of systems installed. There are been various documented quality control issues with a few popular ceramic coating manufactures as well that has further pushed us away from it.

Care to explain the circumstances behind that photo. I see a lot of thermal-tech wrap that seems to be burnt off.

That is from the Team Fox BTTF Delorean. Part of the bumper melted off, but fortunately nothing else major happened. Not sure why they wrapped it, but that exhaust has seen quite a bit of use for sure!!

Also available is the White Lightning coating. An outfit out of New York
We use this on our manifolds down pipes and turbo's (Lotus).
