View Full Version : Transmission 5-Speed Urethane Trans mounts?

My Trans mounts are looking quite bad, heavily cracked and allowing the trans nose cone to hit the frame under hard acceleration. Anyone know of stronger than stock mounts, like some urethane? Any experiences with them? My only fear is that they may transmit more noise and vibration than I want. Plus $62 ea is a bit much.

Sounds like your mounts are simply old, not that you need a different material.... Also there's a very small clearance between the shift mech and one of the strngthening ribs on the chassis which you can bend out a bit more.

I would be interested in this as well. I know some people have made their own urethane mounts (in different applications). Mine are in decent shape but in 30+ years the rubber does break down. This kind of turns me off to the NOS ones.

Nos components especially consumables made with rubber are junk. Stay away from anything rubber. A/c lines are the worst when nos.

I would think the NOS mounts would still be OK. Not uncommon for the trans mounts, especially the left one, to crack. It can be welded or replaced. It also messes up the shift linkage adjustments so after you replace (or repair) the mounts check the adjustments.

Welding? The rubber is failing. Does Dpi have a source for new rubber mounts?

I have poly urethane engine mounts in my Lotus. Granted, those are engine mounts, not gearbox, but they definitely do add quite a bit of vibration to the car at idle.

So your mounts are good after 30 years but you wouldn't replace like-for-like because of the reputation of parts made from similar stuff :question: I think we should all be happy with a service item lasting 30 years...

On one car I fixed, the metal part of the left trans mount had cracked. The rubber was still good. I welded the mount and all was fine after I readjusted the transmission linkage. The rubber for the transmission mounts seems to last a long time. If, in your case, the rubber has failed, then you have to replace the mount. Your choices are to either buy a used one or an NOS one.
