Extrude Honing Air Intake

Has anyone had Extrude Honing done to the air intake? I have heard various statements saying that the air intake on the DeLorean is very restrictive. The process basically takes a very abrasive paste and pumps it through the intake to open it up and remove material where traditional port and polish tools cannot reach. I plan on doing some engine work this winter and was wondering if anyone thought that increasing the air flow would be beneficial.

You can have to much flow. There is a fine line between velocity and flow. I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you have a flow bench. We take out the rough spots in the manifolds on our SPEC II package but do not remove material beyond minor port matching on the last 3/4 inch into our cnc ported heads.

I should add that due to the size of our intake valves as well it is very easy to loose velocity through porting etc. Bigger is not always better.

Good to know Josh. I am planning on doing a rebuild along the lines of what Jim Reeve did.


Higher compression pistons (9.8:1) from DMC Europe.(same Pistons)
Milled heads by 1mm to bring total compression to about 10.7:1.
Entire rotating assembly rebalanced. (Pistons were lighter, so the
crankshaft is now too). (Same procedure to raise compression)
Fast Cams from DMC Europe (these are milled to actually re-time them
for a 1mm head shave!) (Same CAMS)
Porting of the heads, this included filling in and removing the EGR
lump, and overall opening of the intake and exhaust ports. It was
done with a flowbench. (Looking into this, aka, this thread on extrude honing)
Lightened the flywheel by a little over 3lbs.(NOT DOING)
Removed the deceleration valves on the throttle plates and soldered shut/smooth. (UNSURE)
DMC Stage I Stainless Exhaust (I am thinking of UK Exhaust)


I figured after all this stuff I plan to have done, would it be beneficial or not.

Thanks Josh, I was already planning to do so, lol.

I figured it was along the lines of work you have done.

I still have some time to think and prepare, as the work will start after the first weekend in December when the car is stored for the winter.

One thing I need to add to my to do list is try soldering the decel valves closed (I still have my bad throttle assembly). I wonder if my new idle ECU can compensate for no decel valves.

Things have just been to busy lately and my "to do list" just keeps growing.:banghead:

I thought I had read that soldering them was bad. After speaking to Jim about this he gave me a very detailed description as to how to do it and why. Seems to make sense.

Check with Don at DMCCA - he was planning on having an intake extrusion honed a few years back. He may even have one not installed on an engine currently, wouldn't hurt to ask.

I just got a response back.

"We did try this on a few Delorean's, but we did not see any change in dino readings with the Extrude honing"

Question answered. I do wonder if there is benefit on a modified motor though? I'll have to look into that.
