So this has been a long time coming and this is a long post. If you just want pics then go to http://imgur.com/a/jG8eX.

I bought my car in August 2003 from Mike Polzin. It was a project car and I knew it going in. The status of the car when I got it was the following

Brakes were not functional
Engine ran but was rough
A rat nest in the AC blower motor
A rat nest in the compartment behind the driver seat
Car was painted red due to a prior accident by the previous owner that Mike got the car from
It had sat in a barn for over 10 years in Arizona
Engine compartment cover cracked through all around the latch requiring large fiberglass repair

Fiberglass does not rust, I had a nice soup left for me and the odor of the car was terrible. You could smell it with the doors shut as you walked by. The first thing I did was remove all of the carpet and soak them in a large bucket of odor removal. I also scrubbed every inch of the interior fiberglass many times over. It took months for the smell to die down so that it was only noticeable when the doors were open. I also had to remove the wood behind the driver seat due to it rotting from being urine soaked.

I met Walter Coe who was a Delorean owner before going off the deep end about anti-gravity and selling all of his Deloreans. He helped me get a number of things on the car repaired.

Overhauled the brake system, new calipers along with new stainless lines
Replaced the master and slave cylinders due to leaking
Completely drained and cleaned the fuel tank
New fuel pump along with new orange fuel lines
Replaced the coolant bottle with a stainless bottle
Replaced some of the coolant lines with silicone lines, back before I started seeing anyone else offer them
Replaced the two rear trailing arm bolts with Walt TABs, a metric version of the Toby TAB, same material that Walt paid to have made
Cleaned out the deep holes in the middle of the engine block (way under the water pipe) and filled in with high temp silicone
Replaced the door handles with the new metal ones after the driver one snapped off
Partially stripped the panels. Walter wanted a painted car so we ended up panel swapping most of the panels. Hood was not swapped due to wanting a grooved hood
Stripped the hood, Airplane Remover is wonderful stuff. Still needs to be regrained
Engine cover damage repaired but not smoothed and painted

I also took the wheels to a shop that sand blasted them then baked on a matching powder coat. Around 2006, my work put me on the road for almost a year, besides missing most of my wife's pregnancy, the car sat with no AC system, no carpets in the car, door panels missing, but a working engine and brakes. I live in Florida, our seasons go Summer, Summer, Summer, Spring. There is a narrow window you can drive a Delorean in Florida with no AC without getting heat stroke and I wasn't home during that time. The next 3 years, 2007 to 2010 the car was neglected, but driven randomly to keep the fluids moving, due to now moving into a house, my wife having a child, and my job's "1 year on the road" turned into 4 years of traveling almost every other week when I was suppose to be at a desk doing programming.

At the end of 2010 I landed a job on the other coast of Florida and the car drove beautifully for 3 hours to the apartment we moved into. We didn't move into a house due to not knowing the area and needing time to settle and figure out where we would want to have a house. Apartment complex's do not like you doing work on vehicles in their parking lot so 5096 sat in a garage for 2 years. I moved to a house in March of 2013 and it was very problematic to get the engine running due to being gummed up. I also had not done any work on the car due to the distance to the garage from the apartment itself and no easy way to get relief from the heat of the baking chamber they called a garage.

I have a 370Z on lease, the lease started in May 2012 and is for 3 years. I had a plan then to make the Delorean my daily driver when the lease ended. After moving to the house in March, I started planning around May that I need to start working on the car but I did not know of any shops that I would trust to do any work on the car. I did know that I could do the work myself though as I have all of the documents and am mechanically inclined. I was running out to pick dinner up for the family one night when my daughter wanted to go with me, she likes the 370Z, so of course I delayed leaving so she could tag along. As I pulled out onto one of the main streets I saw a Delorean going the other direction. She did not see it and started questioning my very rapid U turn. I followed it to a gas station and talked to the owner, Randy, who let me know he use to live in the area and now lives in Orlando. He had just picked up the car from his friend Eddie and told me I should get in contact with him.

I got in touch with Eddie which has resulted in me being one of the cars to get his EFI upgrade along with a turbo and exhaust rework at the same time. Eddie's shop is so close to the house I could walk to it and probably hit it with a good golf swing. Of course I would have never ran into Eddie if it wasn't for my daughter delaying me as I would have driven past the road that Randy turned off from and never seen his car. To prep for Eddie taking the car, hopefully Monday if the weather holds, the following has been done.

Replaced the broken driver side handle and replaced the passenger handle with the new metal ones
New alternator
Fuse box removed and new one soldered into place
New relays
Bracket for the electronics sand blasted and repainted due to rust

I still need to mount the bracket and get the electronics mounted. When I first got the car it sat under my mom's oak tree, the leaves got into everything. The whole inside edge of the door was filled to the brim, the engine compartment had them everywhere, the trunk had 2" of leaves. Some compressed air and the shop vac took care of them.

I plan on continuing with the pictures and while Eddie has the car, the yellow bin of AC parts should start to look like an actual AC component. My goal is to have 5096 daily driving by the end of 2014. Once Eddie is done the next step will be to get the AC back together and into the car. From there, almost everything I have is cosmetic and visual that I am aware of.

Awesome stuff. Eddie and I talked a good bit about your car last he and I spoke (mine is the VR6 he is doing). You are in good hands, man. Glad you ran into Eddie. Everyone who lives within driving distance of him is damn lucky.

HOLY CRAP. I just looked at your photos. Dude, I almost bought that car many moons ago - all the way back to 2003 like you said. I remember the Arkansas plates and was like "Nah, I have no idea how to remove paint from stainless steel..."

Small world, man. Those pictures of your car in the driveway - aren't those like - 9 years old or so ??

Lightning
12-29-2013, 12:43 AM
The driveway pics are 10 years old, 12/13/2003 according to my local folder name. I did want to get things done sooner to the car but my old job messed things up + now 3 years at the new job with 2 of those being at the apartment. Removing the paint was easy, the airplane remover stuff from the auto store was dead simple. Pour it on, watch it bubble, hose it off. Rinse and repeat. The only issue I have is that the person that painted it roughed the grain so now it needs to be regrained, of course Eddie has an idea for that too.

I was looking at your car and it's looking nice, heck his paint guy is going to use the color of your fascia for mine. It is nice to have a shop sitting in my back yard.

I forgot to mention, the blinker lights work also, some very careful solder work 10 years ago.

I appreciate the kind words. Credit goes to HillBillyDMC here at DMCTalk. He is the man who re-painted my fascias in his own bodyshop, and I was VERY pleased with the end result.

Just added a couple pics. Removed a mud dauber nest and installed the electrical component box. It is a rainy day so I can't clean the engine bay. I also temp fixed the driver seat that was wobbly. The gear mechanism had come apart. It is fun trying to tighten a nut on a press fit bolt that came loose. It should last until Eddy is done then I'll do a more proper fix as the passenger seat needs it too.

I finally got started on Sam's car and have the fuel system torn down. I was able to get the fuel distributor modified, cleaned and put back together. I also got the plenum cleaned and ready to be reassembled. because Sam has no intentions of ever going back to stock I am going to rewire the engine bay and get rid of all the extra cables that are not needed. Turbocharger, fuel injectors and other parts are already here, I should get the ECU this weekend. The plan is to get the EFI system installed and ready, then move on to pulling the exhaust system down for new gaskets and start building the turbo kit. I will be out of town this week on a business trip so work will not resume until next Saturday.

Hi Samuel, cool history on your car, thanks for sharing. I admire you for saving a car in such conditions and taking on a challenge like that. I know it can be frustrating and patience is a must with these cars. But sounds like you have been already after many years. I'm sure you are excited to finally get a great running car.

Looking forward to seeing the progress.

One thing you mentioned is changing door handles. Was that hard to do? I've always just opened my doors with two hands to reduce any strain on the handes as I have always had a fear that they would snap for some reason,

I will be taking my car to Eddie hopefully soon after he has some space open to get Sherry's kit as well.

Mine actually snapped while only under the tension of the wire to undo the latch, it was not a lot of tension. Replacement was easy, there are two nuts on the inside of the door that you undo then pull the handle out from the outside (might be stuck so wiggle) and undo the wire that is attached. Having an extra long THIN extension bar for the ratchet wrench helps. I had a long extension bar but it was too thick to get over the bend on the inside of the door. I could have also used the swivel piece that lets you get to odd angles which would have helped on one of the nuts but that is not in my set currently.

DeLorean03

One quick suggestion: have some tape in your socket, so when you put the hexnuts back on that hold the door handle in place, they don't fall out of your socket and into the door.

Not to steal Samuel's thunder - he did a great job describing it. Take your upper interior door panel off by use of a door trim puller. I used the middle piece in this set here. Thankfully I had a coupon, so they weren't too expensive...

http://www.harborfreight.com/5-piece-upholstery-and-trim-tool-set-99739.html

When you pull the trim piece off, feel alongside the top edge of the trim close to the window. As you feel alongside it, you'll be able to feel the round tops of the fir-trees. Once you locate them, use the trim tool, and gently pry the fir-trees up and out, dislodging the trim piece. Once you get a couple loose, you can gently - gently - pull the rest of the trim piece off by hand - gently....

Once you do this, a headlamp is very helpful. Look towards the inside area of the door where the exterior handle is located. You'll see two hexnuts. They are 10mm (I'm 95% sure). PUT TAPE in your socket, and gently unscrew the hexnuts up and out. At this point, you should be able to go to the exterior portion of the door and gently wiggle the handles out of the door. They will still be connected by a wire with a metal ball on the end. Take note of how it does into the door handle, and then disconnect it. Reassemble from here, and enjoy your new door handle!

Use a soft rubber mallet to put the fir-trees back into the interior portion of the door and secure the interior trim trim back into place. It has worked great for me!

It seems imitating at first, but after you do it, it's ridiculously straight-forward! If I can do it, we all can have hope ;).

Lightning

Or just do as I did and open the door so that the nuts are going up instead of down and avoid the tape :)

Little update on this project. The ECU is here and ready to be installed. The plan is to totally rewire the engine bay to get rid of all the stuff Sam does not want. I'm also going to reroute the main power cable to the alternator so they do more direct and not over the intake manifold. I got the modified fuel injectors installed and I pick up the injector adapters today. I should have the top end buttoned up by this weekend and then I move on to the exhaust and turbo kit afterwards.

So tonight I decided I could not put this thing together without cleaning it up so I pulled it all apart and found some cool things down there.

As an additional option, Sam wanted the wires cleaned up and simplified so I started to rework the harness.

Here is all the alternator wires shortened and rerouted, I cut out about 3 feet of extra wire out.

I see you found my silicone patch for the deep pits in the engine along with the hoses to avoid the rusty pipe that the cars get. Of course some wasps apparently thought it was a nice home too.

DeLorean03
01-30-2014, 05:25 AM
Wow, that is crazy! Never seen a wasp's nest under the intake before.

The silicone hose route is a great alternative. Back in 2004, before the water return pipe was available, that's exactly what we did as wel. Had no issues for a nearly solid 9 years!

Great stuff, Eddie!

I got Sam's car up on the lift tonight and spend a few hours carefully pulling the exhaust and manifolds off. Two studs were already broken off on the passengers side and only one broke off on the drivers side trying to get it off. I was able to get that one out and plan to tackle the two on the other side tomorrow. I'm going to sandblast the manifolds, resurface the gasket surface and then ceramic paint them before they go back on with the new gasket and stainless stud kits.

I have a suspicion these same studs are broken on Sherry's cars as the leak was in the same place and the same stud is missing right next to the alternator.

SEO Motorsports
02-07-2014, 08:19 AM
I was able to get the two studs out of the head but it was a pain to drill the far back one out. The manifold where very corroded so belt sanding them was not going to do the trick. I had to drop them off at the machine shop to have them milled down.

New exhaust installed and just finished setting the base timing. Lots of adjustments to still do. I like how you can barely see the two muffler pieces poking out of the bottom, and the sound fits the car very well I think.

Today I was finally able to get the distributors mechanical timing and the MegaSquirt's timing synced and it's getting full advance and matching the crank pulley perfectly. I installed the wideband and the fuel was very close because I used Sherry's fuel table as a base because they use the same injectors. I should be able to get the charge piping done this week and then start tuning it. Here is a video of the engine running on a VERY rough tune, it has a lot more to go before its done.

So I have been making a lot of progress on Sam's car but have been bad about posting because he lives about a mile away and can come over just about any time he wants. Intercooler and charge piping are complete with the 3" air intake from the turbo into the pontoon. All I have left is to wire up the intercooler fan and tune it.

Looks BADA$$!!

Shame the rest of the engine is not polished up to match the intake.

I agree, but I try to provide these upgrades for the common DeLorean owner at a fair price, so I give them the option to do the detailing work themselves and I just perform the difficult tasks for them. I normally try and remove the heavy dirt and grime for them while I have everything off. Believe it or not the work to detail an engine takes a lot of hours, and to me is an area where the customer can get involved in the project and save some money if they choose too.

I know what it takes to refurbish an engine. I have done mine all by my self;)

My remark was in no way criticism on your work.

Just a remark on the overall image that does not compliment the effort you put into it!

I may eventually make the engine look cleaner, considering that the front and rear fascia are still painted red, engine look is a bit down on the list :)

No issue with your comment at all, I just took the opportunity to explain the flexibility of what I offer.

Nice to see a blow-thru system used here, as opposed to the more common draw-thru systems that you see on our cars (especially with the kit systems)

I feel it reduces the lag one feels with a BAE kit. With this EFI setup you could convert your BAE system to this configuration too. The turbo having resistance on the inlet side is not good for spool up at all.

I started tuning today and I must say the car pulls much harder that I ever expected on 5psi. It drives very smooth and the transition into boost is rapid. Unfortunately the clutch can not handle it and will need to be replaced. The thing that really ended the day was that the fuel pump died down the street from the shop and after pulling it out it looks like the pickup filter desinigrated and the pump sucked it up. Good thing it happened while idling and not in boost!

I bet - makes perfect sense.

Nice looking work as usual

Ok, so we have the new clutch and fuel pump in and the car is back up and running like a champ so back to tuning. This clutch holds very good!

We are waiting on a new spring for the waste gate I believe. Eddie was doing some tuning and testing and saw 8 psi on the engine so the tuning is on hold to avoid damage until we can knock it back down around the 5psi mark. Once the new spring comes in I plan to get a video of it running and driving by after he's started some tuning then we'll put it on the machine to see what it is actually pushing. I would hope this week sometime.

The car is driving well. Once the new Watergate spring is in I'll be able to finish it up. Let's just say this new clutch is not going to slip!! It grips like the 2JZ car but with a softer pedal.

New spring is in. Ed still has to do some tuning but enjoy the video. Sorry about the size, recorded on my phone. You can hear the turbo a few times even from a far off distance.

Well, 5096 is back in my garage. I debated about continuing this thread or just creating a new one. I'll continue for now unless someone complains being I'm no logger "modding" per se but restoring more now.

Anyways, Got the dash out tonight and have the new one ready to go in. I also have the lovely fiberglass binnacle (thank you stevie67cars!) along with new fiberglass a-pillar trims. Pics are below. My next step is to remove the a-pillars as mine are warped. At least mine were done before they started gluing them under the window so they should come out fairly easy, I just need to borrow a heat gun to loosen the glue around the door portion.

Old Binnacle vs Fiberglass Binnacle (old isn't angled due to not removing the mounting hardware so sizes look off) (http://imgur.com/a/jG8eX#58)

I do have a question, any recommendations for the center console? A previous owner thought it was a smart idea to pain the rear of it silver and to put a big hole in the driver side of it in an attempt to hold it with a screw (failed on that).

They are close. I've noticed on other cars that the binnacle itself is slightly off from the dash. Mine also has a bit of a shine to it vs the plastic dash so I'm not worried about it. If it bothers me enough then I'll dye them both with the dye I'm going to use on the vinyl.

I now have the A pillar trims removed. A heat gun on low constantly moving and an angled pick work well to scrape under the side.

It's done, what do you want to know about it? I believe I put a video up somewhere.

We are currently at a 5lb spring but we are going to up it to 7lb. It drives great but the clutch is still breaking in so it grips much faster than I'm accustom to. As you can see I can't drive this very minute, no AC in Florida sucks, but AC will go in as soon as my dash goes back in which occurs after the A pillar trims.

I've not put it on a dyno yet to get numbers but it's on the list.

So it's been a couple months, the weather is finally turning nice yet due to work I haven't been able to move along as fast as I wanted. I did just dye all of the interior pieces and they match nicely to the new plastic dash. Next step is to start reinstalling the dash and A pillar trims, install the AC then start installing the rest of the interior. Still have a goal of end of the year daily driver.

Random dyed parts. Can you spot the new one? (http://imgur.com/a/jG8eX#64)

Nice job, everything looks good to me. It's pretty impressive how you have taken the interior apart to do all this. I'm sure it will be worth it in the end.

Not something I would have the patience to do at this point in my Delorean ownership :); I think after 10 yrs of work and projects on mine , I'm at the point where I just want to cruise and enjoy the car for once. I redid the seat covers last year on mine and my hands just about felt like they were going to fall off after that one.

Hopefully you meet you goal by the end of the year, thanks for sharing the update,
