Removing the parking brake cable from passenger hub carrier

Hope no one minds me continuing to ask these seemingly basic basic mechanic's questions, but...

How do you remove the parking brake cable from the passenger hub carrier? It was easy enough to disconnect from the caliper, but I soon discovered that the adjusting nuts don't prove a way to remove the cable itself.

It seems like it should be possible to remove the cable from the bracket, but I'm starting to think that I need to remove the entire bracket, which means that I need to take the large nut off the bolt that secures the upper link arm to the carrier. Is that correct?

The goal here is to move the parking brake cable out of the way so I won't snag the transmission on it when I lift the engine/trans it out of the car, as per G:07:01 in the workshop manual.

That's what I thought, but it seems that the slot is widens to a hole that the threaded part of the cable runs through. Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to see this in the photo.

See if you can back the nut off the threaded tube to expose the cable itself and then slide it out.

I admit I'm not entirely sure if that's possible. I'm not quite sure what mechanism is used to keep the cable held onto the end piece.

I pulled back the nut further to see what I could do, but I just seemed to be compressing the spring under the rubber sheath thing. I'm starting to think they assemble the everything on the bracket, and that I'll have to take the upper link arm but off and remove the bracket itself.

Joe,

It is a bugger to wrestle with,but your almost there. Make sure the PB handle inside is fully released (down). Now that you have the cable jacket end nut unthreaded from the adjustment end (the nut against the spring), pull the threaded portion (JACKET) backwards until the inner cable member can slide out the bracket slot. It is a stiff spring but it will compress enough to get it out.

Once the nut is all the way off the end, you can pull the threaded part out of the bracket and the cable will go through the slot. It's tight as you are fighting the spring. Make sure that the hand brake lever is not pulled up. A fir tree tool will help if you have delicate hands. It's even more fun to put it back together.

When installing the cable you hook the handle end up last and it's not so bad, but you really want to avoid disconnecting the handle end at this point.

Aha -- that was what I was missing. I didn't know how far that thread went, so I didn't think I could just unscrew the nut the rest of the way. It took me a bit to realize that it was completely unscrewed and that I was just feeling resistance from the spring.

I don't have a for tree tool, but I was able to pull against the spring and slip the cable past the slot by pulling on the other end of the cable (the still-sheathed bit towards the center of the car, which pushed the washers and nut against the bracket and compressed the spring, thus exposing the cable. I'm hoping the same trick works to put it back together. :)
