My keys were stolen :(

Hi all!

The other day my Delorean keys were stolen and they are the only set I have :(
Just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction here as I'm not sure what parts to buy and how to get this fixed.

Talk to DMCH. They might have the key code on file for your vin. If you have a picture of the key, James might be able to decode it and cut new keys.

If you car happens to be unlocked or if you call a locksmith, you can get the key code written on the door panels.

Do you recall a tiny metal tag on your key ring with a 4 digit code? If so than number's all you need, for ignition at least.

I can't remember having the tag but the car is unlocked so I might be able to find the code from the info in that PDF.

I'm not sure how difficult it is to remove the headliner. My impression was that it would be a lot of work to get the code. You might get lucky and your code is already on file with DMCH.

They are only held on with fir trees, they just pop off.

Surely, if your keys were really stolen, then the safest thing to do would be to buy a new set of locks. No point in letting the thief have access to your car.

In the mean time you may want to disconnect the battery or remove it so any would-be theives can't start your car. You could also pull up the plunger on the inertia switch (driver's side footwell) to disable the fuel pump.

If you are lucky the small round sticker may still be on the bottom of the steering column with the code. Otherwise you have to pull the headliner off the driver side door.

Mine's pre 4200. I had two keys. I'd like to change the door locks just to be sure.

I would call your normal vendor for parts if you're going to a one lock configuration. Who do you normally order from?

I haven't ordered anything for it yet : / I'm kinda new to the Delorean. I'm also in Melbourne Australia so there's not exactly much DMC action down here!

You can go to their website for contact info. Parts and support is no longer available for the 2 key system. DMCH will tell you to convert to the newer 1 key system. Maybe you can find a local locksmith that can be of more help.

Did you buy your car from someone local to you recently or Import it?


I know one Aussie who used be on this forum (DMCPOM) that had to sell his car due to Divorce, which is why I ask.

You should also PM (DMCMW Dave) They are the DMCH vendor affiliate that caters to the folks from DownUnder most often.

We bought it locally, about three years ago now. Not too sure about the backstory.
It's had a few issues so I haven't run it much at all. I wanted to get back into it and start getting it running nice again, but this is a bit of a setback :/
I sent of an email to delorean and got some good leads from people ion these forums so I'll see if anything comes of that.

It's a pretty active forum here, thats great, I wasn't expecting there to be anywhere near this support!

Well some of us don't get out much this time of year. :biggrin: I've also been on an extended Winter Holiday Vacation for a couple weeks. It's back to work tomorrow for me.

Pete most of us in Australia deal with Dave and Julee at DMCMW, Toby and Misty at DMCNW, and Josh at DPI - but all the vendors are fantastic.

Dealing direct with DMCH doesn't work well for us down here.

Glad to hear you found your spare set of keys. I'd pick up some blanks off of ebay and have another set cut just in case. Also email James at DMCH to try and get the codes for your door and ignition as a back up plan in case you ever need it. Your VIN is close to mine so they just may have that info filed away somewhere. If they do have the codes you can get your keys cut from Key-Men. (http://key-men.com/) I know they have the ignition key and the early style door key available to cut from the code but I have yet to use them and I'm not sure about the shipping to AU

Agreed - if nothing else take a good photo of the ignition key, and store it in a safe place or send it in along with your VIN. Then it would be on file in case you need another ignition key in an emergency. Sorry, James can't do the early door keys.

If nothing else, get a couple of copies made ASAP.

Stick the keys in a photocopier and make an image of the keys. DMCH can read the keys from that and decode the keys for future reference. In fact, it is ALWAYS better to cut from code since you can never know how many generations of copies have been made unless you have original blanks and even then they may have been just copied.

Yeah I guess that could get pretty out of whack, the spares aren't that smooth actually so maybe that'd be a better option.

It is recommended to covert to the ONE key system. You can e-mail a High res. Photo of your Ignition key to james(at)delorean.com Then he can cut fresh Pair and set up a new set of door locks and possibly the cubby lock if that doesn't already work with your IGNITION KEY.

The Choice is yours you don't have to do anything, it's just recommended.
