Fuel pump priming noise

Hi all,
I wanted to get an idea of what your fuel pump sounds like when you turn the key before starting the car.

Mine sounds like screaching or grinding during the priming seconds. When I jump the rpm relay it is a continuous screach and grind (I cant imagine driving the car with this noise if I had to jump the relay in an emergency situation).

My modern cars I always hear the pump as a light buzzing noise.

I'm trying to see if my pump is normal or not. My car is having starting issues and when it starts it idles very bad with no acceleration ability. Changed WUR and no difference. This after the last time I drove it nothing unusual was happening, although the pump noise has always existed.

You are sure the noise is from the pump based on listening up front?

If so, it's getting near the end of its life. Replace it soon.

While those Bosch pumps aren't always as quiet as some pumps they don't normally screech or grind.

Yes, this noise has always been present when the pump primes for the last 8 yrs Ive had it and its from the front. But since Im having issues starting the car, Im beginning to wonder if this was a sign my pump is failing. I only drive my car like less than 1000 miles p yr.

I always found it odd that it had to be that loud during prime because during normal driving I never could hear it.

Just recent when I jump the rpm relay the pump stays on a continuos prime with the noise. I would have thought it would be a low hum or buzz.

They also make a lot of noise if the pick-up hose is kinked or collapsing or if the filter in the tank is plugged up. The fuel quiets, cools, and lubricates the pump. It should be quieter when the tank is more than 1/2 full. If it is noisy all the time it is probably near the end of it's life.
