So I am looking to install a custom muffler on my Delorean very shortly. The muffler I would like to use is 6 inches wide. I am curious if there is enough width in the engine bay to install a muffle of the same basic type/design of the stock muffler.

Anyone have any experience in this, or have their muffler off the car currently and could measure? I don't care if the heat shield has to be deleted, as long as there is enough clearance to not hit any of the belts or rub against the back of the frame.

Is there a reason you don't care about the heat shield? It is, after all, attempting to protect the belts some and also protect the seal behind the main pulley.

I sized up a Borla which was about the same thickness. It would not fit without extensive modification to the rear fiberglass section and fascia mounting studs.

Okay so assuming a standard center muffler won't fit then, it's possible to install two separate tailpipe mufflers on each side of the D then? Does anyone have any experience doing that?

I found a Borla 14 inch ss muffler for 73 bucks from J C Whitney. 10 years or a million miles, whichever comes first.

I wouldn't recommend deleting any of the heat shields to fit a custom muffler. The inner heat shield protects not only the alternator and AC belts but also the alternator itself from excessive heat. If you go with a custom setup you'll want to try and engineer some type of new heat shield to protect these components.

Installing thicker muffler /mounting too close to the rear heatshield could also cause warping issues with the rear fascia. Not saying it can't be done but if you still decide to go this route be cautious of distances between components compared to the stock setup.

Also, the stock muffler isn't necessarily the most restrictive component in the exhaust anyway...HP gains from aftermarket vendor solutions have a lot to do with the tubular headers vs the cast iron manifolds on the stock exhaust. If I ever go away from a stock setup I'd gravitate towards either the DPI or DMCH full exhaust kit. They're definitely more expensive than an off the shelf muffler but you're paying for an pre-engineered solution that has been tested and won't cause any issues.

Care to elaborate on this? Did you install it, part #, etc?

Bought the muffler 25 odd years ago. No idea if it's available anymore, or part number. I have a BAE single turbo with custom exhaust
tips. {six square ends, three per side with ss heat shield around it]

I am to squeeze a 2011 Porsche 911 turbo exhaust in there... Wish http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00071_zpsda344cbf.jpg

I have the Island Twin Turbo kit and I run two custom "turbo" mufflers from the stainless works in Ohio....I think that is the same place that does stainless work for DPI. I've had them on for 6 or 7 years now. I don't run cats, but if you take off the turbos, there should easily be room for cats.

I had a setup like this when I first finished my swap but it was only out of necessity due to my short timeframe. I thought it looked terrible and was mad that I didn't find the time to fix it in the beginning. Once I had time to fix it I went with cylindrical mufflers. A small bit of piping and they dropped right in. Pretty much occupied the exact same space without hanging down like the ovals.

I'm guessing dual exhaust pretty much eliminates the need for the heat shield, correct? You're just coming off both sides of the engine and straight out the back, right?

So an update to this, if anyone is wondering, there is NOT 6 inches of clearance for a muffler in the same position as the original, at least not without having to modify something. However, I did find an alternative Borla muffler that is only 4 inches thick that does fit, so I lucked out in the end. It's going to be installed in the new month or so, and I'll post pics and video of the sound once it's all ready to go.

Can you give us a part number of the one you found that will fit?

The early version of Houston's "Performance Exhaust" used a Series 80 Flowmaster. (With 2.5" ins and outs.)

Note: You will not have enough room to get a wrench on your crankshaft nut with this muffler and heat shield in place. I just thought I'd mention this if you happen to care about stuff like that.

do you have a photo with that ON your car? Interested to see how it loos as the compartment is lower than the exhaust pipes...

This is a custom setup we did a few years ago on a turbo car. No way was I going to have the mufflers hanging down sideways. I'm not sure this could be done on a normal exhaust.

Sorry, couldn't find any. Only pic I had left. I started doing my V-8 conversion before I even fired up the car with this system. I know I sold to a member on this site, just can't remember who. Hopefully he sees this and chimes in.

This must be the best looking Exhausts on a D!
Nicely looking downards which was a classic look for sporty cars in the 80s! Plus it looks so original.

Dave, what are the pro's and cons of joint exhausts and split set up?
