Ok, this is a tricky one folks. Only the most seasoned and veteran DeLorean experts might be able to spot the problem here:

Seriously though, what the heck went wrong with the grease inside the lambda counter?? It looks almost like it congealed or something. And considering it's all crammed at one end, it likely explains why there was the added resistance to the angle drive turning.

Can I just clean it all out, get it back together, and hope for the best?? I had hoped to go to a car show tomorrow morning so while I can live without a speedo, I don't want to wait til next week to get new parts.

30 year old grease. Pretty amazing, I'm surprised this doesn't cause more problems.

I'd degrease it all with brake cleaner and re-grease it with a light grease. You don't have much to lose!

Somebody must have had a lot of left-overs of grease and used it all on your car.
In my car there was no grease visible.

Since these gears do not reach high speeds a bit of teflon oil may be all you need.
Don't spray around, use a tiny drop.

As Dave suggested, clean thoroughly.

Wow, mine as essentially dry when I opened it. Could that be excess grease that made it into the counter from an over-greased upper speedo cable?

I cleaned mine, & used light spray lithium grease on the friction areas....just a little in all the right places.
